Visual Studio :: Modifying Usercontrol Layout Force A Rebuild?

Nov 24, 2010

When editing a UserControl (.ascx) in my project, it forces a rebuild of the website when requesting the page. This really gets annoying when programming any large project, the build time goes up to 15sec+.

In the last few days I found myself looking at a blank screen more often than programming. This gets frustrating, all the waiting.

Visual Studio :: Build And Rebuild Yielding Different Files?

Apr 16, 2010

I've got a solution that contains several projects. There is a main exe project which I'll call MyProj.exe that references several other projects which reference yet other projects in the solution. Additionally a few projects in the solution are not in MyProj's reference chain and aren't regularly built. There is 1 project (a class library project) named Payment which is giving me a particularly hard time. The two of MyProj's references have a project reference to Payment.dll. So the reference heirarchy looks like this:

- MyProj.exe
- Transactions
- Payment
- Accounts
- Payment

When I right click MyProj in the Solution Explorer and choose Build, everything works fine, but when I choose Rebuild, I get the following results:

Payment.dll is deleted but never rebuilt. It doesn't exist in the output directory MyProj.manifest in the output directory doesn't have a reference to Payment.dll. (What is this file? I don't remember normally seeing it in other project's the output directories.) 19 of the project .pdb files are deleted and not rebuilt This is a big problem for me because this is a ClickOnce application and when I'm publishing, Payment.dll isn't getting included in my deployment which is a problem I suspect is closely related.

C# - Visual Studio 2010: Breakpoints Don't Work After Rebuild

Jan 25, 2011

I'm working on a VS2010 Solution containing an ASP.NET Website Project and 8 c# class libraries. All projects are set to compile under .NET 3.5

When I set a breakpoint somewhere in the class libraries, the debugger breaks correctly and everything is fine. If I then stop debugging, modify code in the class library, and start debugging again (which of course rebuilds the libraries which were modified) the debugger ignores the breakpoints.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I'm lost and it's extremely frustrating to not be able to debug after making even a single line change and rebuilding.

Visual Studio :: Layout Of Controls On A Web Page?

Jan 20, 2011

I am learning ASP .net (I have several years experience designing windows applications). When I add controls to a new blank web page, I do not seem to be able to control where on the page these controls sit. They default to being jammed up against one another from left to right in the top left corner. Am I missing something? Is something not working? If this is by design, what is the basic method for controlling how controls sit on the web page?

Editing Layout In Visual Studio 2010?

Jun 10, 2010

I have installed the current version of nopCommerce (v1.6) on my local server using SQL server express.I have downloaded the version with source code and have installed it without problems. When I go to open any .aspx pages it opens perfectly but when you switch to design view all you can see is broken image's and databound labels. It looks as if it is not using the CSS as the layout is single coloum down the left hand side of the page. When I run the solution through the local host it appears perfectly in the web browser, but when I go back to the visual studio design page it still does not render correctly.Has this happened to anyone else? Has anyone found a solution to this?It makes it really hard to change the layout as when I am editing the CSS on my other monitor usually I can see it updating the page while I edit the CSS on the other, with nopCommerce I have to build the solution every time I want to look at the changes I have made. It also makes it nearly impossible to place new controls into the webpage without fiddling with them for an hour before they are in the right position.I have coded other websites by hand in visual studio I have been able to edit the layout without having to build the solution.

Visual Studio - Multiple Solution Layout For .NET Web Portal?

Dec 25, 2010

At work, we've developed a custom ASP.NET Web Portal (That's very similar to iGoogle). We have "Apps" (self-contained, large web forms) and "Modules" (similar to Google Gadgets).Currently, we use a single-solution model. Right now, we have:

3 core projects
60 application projects
80 module projects

To reduce copy and pasting between projects, we're going to factor out common functionality (Data Access, Business Logic) into separate projects. I'd also like to introduce Unit Tests, which is going to increase the number of projects even more. We've already reached the point where Visual Studio is choking on the number of projects. We generally only load the 3 core projects and then whatever app's/module's project we're working on.Would a different solution structure help us out? Our number of projects is only going to increase.

In general, an app or module only references the 3 core projects. Soon, apps/modules may start referencing the Data Access/Business Logic projects. But in general, apps and modules do not make references between themselves. So to recap, what is the best practice for solution structure when there are MANY projects that use a small number of core projects?

Visual Studio :: When Open An Aspx Page In Design View The Layout Is "scrunched" Up?

Jul 2, 2010

We have two installs of VS 2008. One on a machine that previously had 2005 installed and one on a new [clean] machine with no previous Visual Studio install. The clean machine install went fine, however when we open an aspx page in design view the layout is "scrunched" up. In source view the text matches the text in source view [of a copy of the same aspx page].In design view on the 2005/2008 VS installed machine, the layout is fine.Layout on the page is done in a "Table", with various text boxes, buttons, gridviews.

And just to reiterate, the aspx file in design view [using VS 2008 SP1] on the machine that has VS 2005/2008 installedlooks fine, no problem. The same page loaded in design view on the clean machine with VS 2008 SP1 installed is "scrunched" up.For example the gridview that should be at the top right of the page is in left-center of the page and the gridview that should be at the bottom-center of the page is also at the left-center, directly on top of the gridview that should be at the top right sideof the page.Have compared the config of VS 2008 on both machines and can't find a problem!

Css - Modifying App's Global Visual Identity Without A Master Page?

Nov 23, 2010

I've to fix an old ASP.NET application's appearance so that it can conform to the new web visual identity of my organization. The old application does not have any master page and uses a very basic .include file. Modifying the .include header does not change the overall look of the app's pages much, and I still have to manually import new css definitions, replace the table tags with divs on the 60 odd .aspx pages. How should I proceed? I have long term maintainability in mind, so a master page is the obvious solution.

SQL Server :: Renaming Or Modifying Columns In SQL Management Studio 2008

Oct 25, 2010

I have recently upgraded to SQL Management Studio 2008. The first thing I noticed is it wouldn't allow me to save changes to my table structure at all. I fixed this by disabling "Prevent Saving Changes that requre table re-creation" under Tools..Options...Designers...Table and Database Designers. Now it lets me save. However, if I rename a column in a table that has data in it, I get a warning telling me my data will be lost since the old column will be gone and the new column has no data in it. Since when does renaming a column require a table to be recreated? Is this some sort of setting in SQL Management Studio? If I can't don things like rename clolumns (even change column data types) without losing all my data, then what is the point of using SQL management studio?

It reset everyhing in my options of the web app/ etc, and now some AJAX conrols don't work such as dragpanel. I assume that it is because something got reset that I haven't enabled again, but can't figure it out.
