View 6 RepliesI am learning ASP .net (I have several years experience designing windows applications). When I add controls to a new blank web page, I do not seem to be able to control where on the page these controls sit. They default to being jammed up against one another from left to right in the top left corner. Am I missing something? Is something not working? If this is by design, what is the basic method for controlling how controls sit on the web page?
View 1 RepliesI have installed the current version of nopCommerce (v1.6) on my local server using SQL server express.I have downloaded the version with source code and have installed it without problems.When I go to open any .aspx pages it opens perfectly but when you switch to design view all you can see is broken image's and databound labels. It looks as if it is not using the CSS as the layout is single coloum down the left hand side of the page. When I run the solution through the local host it appears perfectly in the web browser, but when I go back to the visual studio design page it still does not render correctly.Has this happened to anyone else? Has anyone found a solution to this?It makes it really hard to change the layout as when I am editing the CSS on my other monitor usually I can see it updating the page while I edit the CSS on the other, with nopCommerce I have to build the solution every time I want to look at the changes I have made. It also makes it nearly impossible to place new controls into the webpage without fiddling with them for an hour before they are in the right position.I have coded other websites by hand in visual studio I have been able to edit the layout without having to build the solution.
View 1 RepliesAt work, we've developed a custom ASP.NET Web Portal (That's very similar to iGoogle). We have "Apps" (self-contained, large web forms) and "Modules" (similar to Google Gadgets).Currently, we use a single-solution model. Right now, we have:
3 core projects
60 application projects
80 module projects
To reduce copy and pasting between projects, we're going to factor out common functionality (Data Access, Business Logic) into separate projects. I'd also like to introduce Unit Tests, which is going to increase the number of projects even more.We've already reached the point where Visual Studio is choking on the number of projects. We generally only load the 3 core projects and then whatever app's/module's project we're working on.Would a different solution structure help us out? Our number of projects is only going to increase.
In general, an app or module only references the 3 core projects. Soon, apps/modules may start referencing the Data Access/Business Logic projects. But in general, apps and modules do not make references between themselves.So to recap, what is the best practice for solution structure when there are MANY projects that use a small number of core projects?
When editing a UserControl (.ascx) in my project, it forces a rebuild of the website when requesting the page. This really gets annoying when programming any large project, the build time goes up to 15sec+.
In the last few days I found myself looking at a blank screen more often than programming. This gets frustrating, all the waiting.

View 8 Repliesthis sound may too easy, but for a person who has no idea about the asp.net is not. I am using visual studio 2008 and I want to add a drop down menu in my page. does any body have any idea how to add this please? The dropdown menu should be linked to a table from an access database since I am going to collect the data with C# therefore I decided to post in in this forum.
View 3 RepliesI tried using the the New ASP.NET Default Web Template in Visual Studio 2010 but one issue I'm encountering is with the CSS selected menu item and read apost which stated that...
"This screenshot demonstrates some of the styling options provided by the CSS, including the style for the selected About menu item"...In the screenshot the "About Us" menu item is highlighted but the page's content is the "Home" page content, not "About Us" page. My problem is...I can't get the selected item to be highlighted as in the screenshot even with fresh site using the built in template.
We have two installs of VS 2008. One on a machine that previously had 2005 installed and one on a new [clean] machine with no previous Visual Studio install.The clean machine install went fine, however when we open an aspx page in design view the layout is "scrunched" up. In source view the text matches the text in source view [of a copy of the same aspx page].In design view on the 2005/2008 VS installed machine, the layout is fine.Layout on the page is done in a "Table", with various text boxes, buttons, gridviews.
And just to reiterate, the aspx file in design view [using VS 2008 SP1] on the machine that has VS 2005/2008 installedlooks fine, no problem.The same page loaded in design view on the clean machine with VS 2008 SP1 installed is "scrunched" up.For example the gridview that should be at the top right of the page is in left-center of the page and the gridview that should be at the bottom-center of the page is also at the left-center, directly on top of the gridview that should be at the top right sideof the page.Have compared the config of VS 2008 on both machines and can't find a problem!
i have cretaed a Menu control in asp.net. I want to set MenuItems at certain alignment position,i.e., certain horizontal and vertical alignment. How to set these styles in Menu Control ?
View 2 RepliesI came across this site and like the top nav menu [URL] can visual studio 2008 generate such a menu like that. Moreover, what about if I want to apply security on what to show in the menu. For instance, I will have 3 departments ( Finance, Accounting and Marketing ) each department has its own apsx page. Depending on role, I need to show / not show a page under each department. How can I enforce such thing.
View 1 RepliesI'm developing a web form using visual basic.net and visual studio 2008. I noticed I cannot select multiple text boxes and make the them to align all make them the same size. I select one textbox, and then hit ctrl to select more controls, it did't do anything. And also I cannot see in format menu, something like align or make the same size. But if I create a windows form, I can see the options. But I remember I can do this in visual studio 2005 before even for asp.net web form.
View 5 RepliesI have a very vexxing issue. After installing a third-party application and add-in for VSTS 2008, it has corrupted my menus/buttons by duplicating/cascading these throughout studio (i.e. Multiple sets of each menu - File, Edit, View, etc, each of which has multiple submenu entry sets). I have tried to use Add-In Manager to uninstall it and removing the application (which added the Add-in to VSTS). I tried Tools->Customize and resetting the MenuBar and ContextMenu options as well. I tried running each of the following (closing and then reopening VSTS after each) from the command prompt, which completed but did not fix things.
devenv /resetsettings
devenv /resetSkipPkgs
devenv /resetuserdata
devenv /setup
My question then, does anyone know a way to reset the menus/toolbars for VSTS 2008 to their defaults or correct this some other way? I know I can unistalll both products and resolve this but I *really* want to be able to use the third party app (Red Gate's SQL Prompt).
I have a trial version of VS2010 and created a simple out of the box ASP .Net web application. I have been playing around with the css file for the project and have yet to figure out how to effect the menu tabs.
View 2 Replies would like to ask about how can I insert a menu bar in a Web site that is created in visual studio 2010.
My toolbox seems to not have a menu tool inside.
Is there a way to drop a menu in my page like I drop a button?
i havent uninstalled Visual studio 2010 .... for some requirements i had to repair my visual studio 2010 installation... now after repairing or reinstalling (not uninstalling and then installing, i reinstalled from the visual studio installation options) the visual studio 2010 i noticed that the asp.net Mvc template has vanished ... i tried to repair/ reinstall again but somehow it doesnt come up ... the template is not reflected into the visual studio new projects menu... as a result i am not able to load any of the mvc projects either ....
is there any possible way apart from uninstalling /repairing or reinstalling the visual studio i can get back my template again ? into my visual studio.... like wise somewhat kinda manual customization or like that ?

View 1 RepliesI am working on a custom menu control, partially as a learning exercise, and I am having trouble with Visual Studio's IntelliSense support for it in markup view.The conventional ASP.NET menu allows you to place an arbitrary depth of <asp:MenuItem/> elements under the <Items>...</Items> element. I'm after the same behaviour for my menu.Mine unfortunately does not. VS insists on an empty tag:
<hn:AwesomeMenu runat="server" ID="menu">
<Items />
</hn:AwesomeMenu>
