Visual Studio - Get Website Precompilation To Exclude A Certain Folder
Mar 2, 2011
The several different environments (e.g. live, demo etc) of my web app are differentiated by config settings in a folder called EnvironmentConfiguration. Whenever I update one of the sites, I delete the EnvironmentConfiguration folder from the precompiled site before copying the website files over (i.e. in order that the EnvironmentConfiguration folder in the deployment location is not replaced). Just to save mistakes, is there a way I can get Visual Studio not to produce the EnvironmentConfiguration folder when it precompiles the site for me?

VWD 2008 Express.
I have a folder in my project that contains files I do not want to process (they are only for reference) when I build the web site. These files produce errors because they reference things I do not have in my site. How can I exclude a folder so that it is not processed during a build?

I'm using Vs2010 professional. I was working with a large WebSite (folder) project at work using IIS7 and tried to attach the debugger to the w3wp.exe for debugging an aspx page in IE8 after setting breakpoints in the javascript for the page and in the Page_Load in the code behind. I got a "first chance exception of type 'System.InvalidOperationException' occurred in System.dll" in my debug output, so I gave up for the moment. I created a default website project in the root of IIs7, and set it up as an application in IIs7 with the default app pool.
I tried entering a little javascript in the head, and set a breakpoint, and set a breakpoint again in the Page_Load. I attached the debugger again to w3wp.exe. I see the assemblies load in the debug output and nothing happens:

Just to test, I created a blank website and a blank web site project.
When I added a referece to web site by doing right click and add reference it added the dll inside a BIN folder but on ther other hand when I did the same for a web site project it created a reference folder for me and then added the dll under the reference folder.

I signed up with a new hosting company that uses Plesk. I use Visual Studio 2005 It appears that my rootfolder must be named httpdocs, which means every website I create would have the same name. If I do nothave my aspx files stored locally in an httpdocs folder, then I cannot synchronize with the server when I usethe copyweb dialog. Also Visual Studio 2005 creates a folder using the website name in the C:Documents and SettingsuserLocalSettingsApplication DataMicrosoftWebsiteCache for storing website settings, but cannot have multiple folders of same name, i.e., httpdocs, so this seems to be a conflict with Plesk. What can I do to resolve this?I talked with support at the hosting company, but they do not know Visual Studio at all. I am thinking I need to switch to

My client gave me this web solution, in it various projects, and the problematic project (for me) is the Web Site.
I've copied the code to test web server (2008) and installed VS 2008 so I could step through the code on the server due to some weirdness.
Anyhow, when I open the solution locally on my personal computer, it runs on Cassini [URL] because I'm not on a server OS. However, when I run the app on the web server, when I hit F5, it runs oh [URL].
When I'm running the code on the server, how do I point the web site to use Cassini?

I have a large folder (1.5 GB) in my ASP.NET Web Site, called Downloads, which contains media files, graphics, etc. No code that needs to be compiled or even deployed on every build.
I use Web Deployment Projects to compile and deploy. Every time I build the deployment project, the Downloads folder gets included and copied to the output location. This is taking a significant amount of time, because the folder is copied twice.
I've tried modifying the wdproj file like this:
<ItemGroup><ExcludeFromBuild
Include="$(SourceWebPhysicalPath)Download*"
/>
I've also tried not adding the * after the folder, but then I get a message that says the directory is not empty during the build process.
I've also tried this approach:
<ItemGroup>
<RemoveBeforeMerge Include="$(OutputPath)Downloads*" />
</ItemGroup>
And that still did not help. (also says: The directory is not empty.)What is the proper way to tell WDP not to consider a folder at all?

I know you can add an existing item(s), but is there a way to add an Existing folder (and contents) to a project? It sucks without this option. I need to add a folder that has many folders and a lot of content.

I've searched but not found much that helps, could be using wrong search terms.Anyway, currently using Visual Studio 2005 and VB, but just got Visual Studio 2010 and trying to use C# and am having problems using classes, I think I'm missing something simple here.
In both 2005 & 2010 I create a new website and a Default.aspx, in 2005 using VB, C# in 2010.
Right-click the project -> Add New Item -> Class, and leave it as Class1.vb/Class1.cs
Both 2005 & 2010 prompt to place it in the App_Code folder, so choose yes.
Here are the class files, I've not changed anything apart from create a very simple function:
Class1.vb code: [Code]....
Class1.cs code: [Code]....
In my VB project Default.aspx.vb: [Code]....
No errors, and debugging shows that a = "hello"
My Default.aspx.cs: [Code]....
This gives an error:Error 1 The name 'tester' does not exist in the current context D:Visual Studio 2010WebSite11Default.aspx.cs
How do I reference the tester function within Class1 in my C# project?

I have a few questions regarding the "special" ASP.NET folders in Visual Studio web projects.
Adding an App_Data folder in Visual Studio is present, but grayed out in my C# web project, why?
What are the meanings of the various ASP.NET "special" folders?
App_GlobalResources App_LocalResources App_Data App_Browsers Themes - I know this is used to contain stylesheets for a particular theme and is then specified in the web.config or page (if I remember right).
App_Code - Were these classes that were pre-compiled? Do these ASP.NET folders retain their special meaning if you manually create a folder with the same name instead using the "Add ASP.NET Folder" feature in Visual Studio?

I am a developer who up until now only used WAP assemblies. Is that old and outdated nowadays? For example I have found a really great sample of google map API I'l like to use but my project is in VB.NET and the sample is using code in App_Code folder in C# so I cannot mix and integrate in a easy way. Do I have to convert the C# code into VB.Net to make it work or is there a shortcut when finding sample code in App_Code folder in the wrong code language?

In my company app we have organized it something like the following:
1. Solution (Transcripts)
Solution Folder - Lib
Solution Folder - Debug
Solution Folder - Release
Class Library Project
Web Project
My Question:
1. All my references from Web Project are referencing to the DLL's in the Lib folder under Solution (Transcripts). Why can't we refere to DLL's directly under Web Project why the need of creating a new solution folder "Lib"?
2. When we publish the Web Project. Does that mean that all the DLL's under Lib solution folder also gets published?

When using VS2008 and C# I choose File - New - Web Site.I use namespaces in the aspx files in the same folder.The problem is that the aspx files in one folder can not access the aspx files in other folders even though the files in each of the other folders use the same namespace followed by the folder name.
In fact, if I am in one folder and type the namespaces followed by a period, the other folder names are not displayed in intellisense, only the name of the folder name of the aspx file in which it resides is displayed on the intellisense.
How can I get the other folder names to show in intellisense from any other folder that I am working in when coding in the code behind? fyi, in the html inherit I point to the namespace, the folder name and the code behind file then in the code behind file I code the namespace, the folder name the aspx file is in and the class is the name of the code behind file.

I have a simple web app project in Visual Studio 2010 (converted from 2008 project). For some reason when I publish the app, Visual Studio doesn't copy the App_Theme -folder to the publish destination folder. This will cause the app to fail when deployed to production environment.
App_Theme is considered as "system" folder by VS (shown as grey), which means that I can't manually set it's publish properties.
how to get VS to copy App_Theme -folder when deploying?

Please verify the installation of the component or download
from the URl."
I can create a db via SQL Server Mgmt Studio, it connects fine, and I can see tables.
Visual Studio- Server Explorer connects fine to the Database, I can see the tables.
Im running XP SP3 w/ Visual Studio 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer. I had previously removed SQL Server Express.
Why cant I access the database within my project, when Im able to connect to this fine within Visual Studio Server Explorer?
