Web Forms :: Can Use HttpResponse From An Ascx File

Feb 19, 2011

I am looking to render excel from an web control. I have code that works from a web page, but when I run it in an ascx.cs file it doesn't do anything.

Is there something about being in an ascx that makes a difference?

Here is my code:

Response.ClearContent();
Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=file.xls");
Response.ContentType = "application/vnd.ms-excel";
Response.BinaryWrite(result);
Response.End();
Response.Flush();

Why Does Custom HttpResponse Throw Exception On HttpResponse.End()

Jul 27, 2010

I'm writing some code in which I need to use my own HttpResponse object to capture the output from a method on another object that takes an HttpResponse as a parameter. The problem is, this other object (which I cannot modify) calls HttpResponse.End(), which causes an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" exception to be thrown. What can I do about this?

Dim myStringbuilder As New StringBuilder
Dim myStringWriter As New IO.StringWriter(myStringbuilder)
Dim myResponse As New Web.HttpResponse(myStringWriter)

someObject.doStuffWithHttpResponse(myResponse) ' calls myResponse.End() and crashes

Here's some more complete information about the error, thrown from the following code in a console application:

Dim myStringbuilder As New StringBuilder
Dim myStringWriter As New IO.StringWriter(myStringbuilder)
Dim myResponse As New Web.HttpResponse(myStringWriter)
Try
myResponse.End()
Catch ex As Exception
Console.WriteLine(ex.ToString)
End Try

Here's the text of the exception:

System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
at System.Web.HttpResponse.End()

Web Forms :: Accessing HttpResponse Page.Response From A Class Instead Of Cs File?

Oct 18, 2010

I have an issue with trying to create a Pdf file from my webpage. Basically, everythig involving creating the Pdf (using iTextSharp) is done, and I'm doing this as a File Stream (i.e, I'm saving the Pdf on local machine). Now what I'm trying to do is create it as a Memory Stream (i.e, open the Pdf from the browser). I was able to do this earlier when I wa still at the 1st version of the application, and all of the code behind was incluced in my .aspx.cs file. But now, I've kept the code in the .aspx.cs at a minimum and put the cude in classes and I'm creating onjects of thoses classes from the .aspx.cs

The problem is that the code from creating the Memory Stream is in a class as follows:

[Code]....

As you can imagine, the compiler cannot recognise "Response" as it's in a seperate class instead of in .aspx.cs

Saving HttpResponse / Request To File System

Mar 15, 2010

User fills out this large page which is dynamically created based off DB values. Those values can change. When the user fills out the page and hits submit we want to save a copy of the page as html on the server, this way if the text or wording changes, when they go back to view their posted information, it is historically accurate.

So I basically need to do this

protected void buttonSave_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
//collect information into an object to save it in the db
bool result = BusinessLogic.Save(myBusinessObject);
if (result)
//!!! Here is where I need to save this page as an html file on my servers IFS!!!!
else
//whatever
Response.Redirect("~/SomeOtherPage.aspx");
}

Also I CANNOT just request the data from the url because query string parameters are a big no no in this case. The key to pull the database info up (at its highest level) is all in session so I cant just request a url and save it.

Web Forms :: Calling Controls In A Page From A User Control File (.ascx)?

Nov 5, 2010

I have a page called main.apsx and on that page I have a multiview with a couple of view panes. In main.aspx I also have an have a buttons.ascx file with a few link buttons. When these buttons are clicked I want them to show the the selected view panels in multiview in main.aspx.

I cant seem to figure out where to put the action code for the link buttons. Do I put it into my buttons.ascx.cs file or into main.aspx.cs? I presume in buttons.ascx.cs, but if I do that, how will the buttons find the multiview control?

This is the code for on of my buttons in buttons.ascx.cs

[Code]....

When I run it like this is gives an error

The name 'MultiView1' does not exist in the current

The name 'View1' does not exist in the current

Web Forms :: Load Pure Html-code In An Ascx-file When Needed?

Jan 9, 2010

i have two buttons, which point to some onclick-methods in my code-behind file. inside these btn_click-codes i want to start adding pure html-code to my page, which was told to me in this forum having done by using ascx-files. note: there would be no code-behind in case of using the ascx-files.

however i do not see a possibility to load these ascx-files within btn_click-code? how to do?

in order to give you an idea of my html-code i have pasted two of them here:

[Code]....

maybe this is the complete wrong approach (as i.e. i believe that body-tags should not be included in .ascx-code). in this - how to do better?

Web Forms :: User Control (.ascx) File - Maxlength Doesn't Work For Multiline Textboxe

Jul 30, 2010

I have a form in aASP User Control (.ascx) file. Maxlength does not work for the multiline textboxe hence it is generated as a textarea, which has no support for this attribute. I could maybe use some asp validation, to prevent submission of too much text, but I want to prevent it to be possible to even enter too many characters, just like is possible for single line textboxes... I don't know if the control has any onload event that I could use to add attributes to the textbox from code behind and and combined with javascript fix this or anything..

MVC :: How To Encapsulate Logic In Ascx Partial View With The Same Efficiency Of Webforms Ascx

Aug 10, 2010

I have to build a few ascx partial views in my MVC applications to encapsulate re-usable functionalities as well as archive SOR and SOC. However, I encountered challenge how to encapsulate the business logic that drives MVC ascx views.In webforms, the code behind of an ASCX control can handle a button click event and browser still shows the same page with only one postback. How can I archive the same thing in MVC? When ~/Address/Edit/2 includes an ascx partial view with a button on it that calls another MVC action - let's say ~/ShareController/CommonAction - what is the best way for the CmmonAction to return to the very same view that includes the ascx file?Perhaps I am missing a common pattern in MVC web development?

Control Within Ascx Is Null When Ascx Is Added From Codebehind?

Apr 14, 2010

I am having difficulties how to construct my question, but if I have to put it simply the situation is that I have categories of products. I have an aspx with a repeater on the left that lists the categories. And I want the products to be listed on the right. Category number is variable so I made an ascx with a DataList in it. When I try to do foreach category, ascx = new ascx(); then the DataList within this ascx control is null.

ps: what I want to do is to preload all the products (thre is not much) and hide the divs and fadein fadeout them using jQuery when a category div is clicked.

rightnow it is using jQuery.load(); and I don't like how the images load, cuz they download from top to bottom. Progressive gifs alsdo not an option. site demo is here [URL]

Javascript - How To Ensure Js Is Included In Ascx File

Feb 17, 2011

So the problem is the following :

i do have own user control. which has some javascript file in script tag included like this

<script type="text/javascript" src="../somefile.js" ></script>

or some javascript code directly on the ascx page. everything works if i place this control somewhere in aspx markup. but if i add this control to the page dynamically to some UpdatePanel place holder on postback (this is logic i can not alter), control renders itself and then i get js error message, which says that functions which are placed in somefile.js are not defined/are null. Why is this happening ? Is there anyway to force js including in this case.

the code amount is huge and i was not able to provide a simplified example with the same error,.

The script is included but somehow the functions are not defined. I'm novice to js, so is it possible that just the script is included but not executed, so the functions are not declared ???

The interesting is that if on some page my custom control is declared in aspx.

User Controls Always Have An Ascx File Extension?

Jun 30, 2010

Okay, maybe it's a bit pedantic, but do ASP.NET user controls HAVE to have an ascx extension?

My reason for wanting to know this is purely academic. I made the statement to someone that they usually have an ascx extension, but then I had the curious thought of if that was always true or not.

C# - Extend Control (ASCX) And Access Base Markup File From Subclass Code?

Jan 29, 2010

I'm building form validation controls for our C# ASP application. The bulk of the work is handled by a BaseValidator control (subclassing System.Web.UI.UserControl), which also has the markup for the validation output. This is then extended by subcontrols like PasswordValidator, that provides the Validate method and any extra fields needed by that validator control.

(The end goal is to have controls like <uc1:PasswordValidator ControlId="txtPassword" /> which we can plop into any form with minimum duplication.)

However, PasswordValidator.ascx.cs cannot access the form elements defined in BaseValidator.ascx; the only way I've found to do so is to duplicate the markup in each subcontrol's *.ascx file. How can I extend BaseValidator.ascx.cs and access BaseValidator.ascx's markup in the subclass?
