Javascript - How To Ensure Js Is Included In Ascx File
Feb 17, 2011
So the problem is the following :
i do have own user control. which has some javascript file in script tag included like this
<script type="text/javascript" src="../somefile.js" ></script>
or some javascript code directly on the ascx page. everything works if i place this control somewhere in aspx markup. but if i add this control to the page dynamically to some UpdatePanel place holder on postback (this is logic i can not alter), control renders itself and then i get js error message, which says that functions which are placed in somefile.js are not defined/are null. Why is this happening ? Is there anyway to force js including in this case.
the code amount is huge and i was not able to provide a simplified example with the same error,.
The script is included but somehow the functions are not defined. I'm novice to js, so is it possible that just the script is included but not executed, so the functions are not declared ???
The interesting is that if on some page my custom control is declared in aspx.

I am using mixed validation i.e. dot net controls validation and javascript validation. Javascript(js) function is 'hpVali()'. It is working when coding javascript within aspx page's head section. but when i moved it in a js file. It stoped working.
I have used the script to register/add js file in aspx.cs file as:

I'm building several user controls (ASCX) for my website and several of them are very similar in what they do. (As a side note, I must create unique UC's even if they're similar because I'm creating widgets for the new Telligent Community themeing system). For example, two of them are different but use the same front-end code to create a 2 or 3 tab panel where you can click a tab and it changes the data below. I have a single JS file to handle these tabs and the animations. I'm currently dynamically adding my JS file reference to the <head> from the user controls' code via:
Literal jsFile = new Literal();
jsFile.Text = string.Format("<script src="{0}"></script>", "/community/themes/test/js/tabbedCallout.js");
Page.Header.Controls.Add(jsFile);
If I have both of these controls on a page though, both will add this JS file reference. How can I do a check to see if it is already added from another control?

i'm having problems with this. I am developing an asp.net mvc 2 application. I have a partial view menu.ascx defined. this gets included on all the pages of my site in the Site.Master masterpage. Now the thing is I want my menu to change according to the type of user.Here's what I did at first:
<%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<dynamic>" %>
<li><%: Html.ActionLink("Home", "Index", "Home")%></li>
<% [code]....
I shouldn't be doing this in the view ! But since this is the MasterPage no controller actually calls it so I don't know where to put the info in the ViewData dictionnary or ViewModel to pass it to this masterpage.

I've been working in asp.net webforms and I've been making a UserControl that depends on a small bit of javascript which is in an external file.
I want to be able to put a reference to the javascript inside the UserControl to ensure that it gets loaded on the page, but the problem is that the UserControl can appear multiple times on a page so I only want the script to be loaded with the first instance of the UserControl.
Is there an easy way to do this in ASP.NET Webforms?

We are working on an ASP.NET CMS project using jQuery as the basis for our client side scripting. The jquery-1.2.6.js file is the only script file that is always included. Other script files are currently included depending on what components the CMS editor is using on a page or page template.A lot of the script combiners produce a static script. If we took that approach we would have to add all possible script files in just in case they were needed. We are not currently using any of the ASP.NET Ajax extensions so have not looked at what that may give us.

I have an asp.net application with basic CRUD functionality. On a page where i am capturing customer details i have several asp.net validators to required fields. I have attached a JS confirm box on the asp.net save button for the form. The trouble is that when the user leaves required fields unfilled and clicks the save button, the JS confirm box comes up, when the ok button is clicked, the save method is called successfully and only after this happened do the asp.net validators fire and display that required information has been left out.

I need to include an offsite javascript file on my page, however I don't want it to be able to affect the performance of my site, in case the server where the javascript is on is down or not responding.
What I'd like to know, is if it's posible with javascript to make some sort of wrapper function to ensure that the page where the offsite javascript is hosted is responding within an acceptable timeframe.
I've considered adding the "defer" attribute to where I include the javascript, but that would as far as I know still leave the site hanging after the rest of the page is loaded.
If it's not possible to do in javascript are there any good alternatives?
My site is made C# asp.net.

I took over a rather large C# .NET 2.0 legacy web application from a colleague who is no longer available. This web application consists out of multiple projects in one solution. And I ran into a problem that I simply do not understand and hopefully somebody here will. The application has multiple .sitemap files included in a sitemap subfolder. So far so good. But I found one .sitemap file that was floating around in the root of the web project and is not used anywhere in the application (it's not included in the web.config).
I excluded this file. The web application runs fine without it. All menu's load correctly. Until I hit a method that uses recursion to look for certain controls (NOT the sitemap!). This method runs down through all controls from a given point and then crashes on the fact that the XMLSitemapProvider is missing this one file. This method is called many times without issues, but when the user logs out it somehow runs through a hierachical path of controls that eventually end up at the missing .sitemap file. The file also needs to be at this exact location in the root. Moving it somewhere else will cause the same crash. The file web.sitemap required by XmlSiteMapProvider does not exist.
I have searched for this filename and all ".sitemap" files but can not find it anywhere in the solution. 0 results found. I've ran past all the code leading up to the crash and it seems arbitrary (it has nothing to do with the sitemaps). The crash just happens because it hits the XmlSiteMapProvider looking for another control when it's going through all controls. In short, I can find no references what so ever to this file!
Since this web application is huge I can not manually go past every section of code. There is hundreds of thousands of lines of code. Does anybody know any other way then through the web.config to include a sitemap or how a sitemap file could be registered and where I should look? Final note: this application used localization. The sitemap's are localized and I found resources for this one sitemap. I hoped excluding those would solve the problem. Unfortunately it didn't.

I would like to make the contents of a file uploaded to a web server unrecoverable after it has been used. My concerns are:
When the file is uploaded, is it stored in a temporary directory (e.g. Windows Temp directory) and how do I clear all traces from there? Can the contents of the file be written to virtual memory and how do I ensure it is not or remove the contents once written? If I encrypt the file, would I still have to worry about the contents being saved to the Temp directory, virtual memory or elsewhere before the file was encrypted? Can I perform a secure delete in all the concerned about locations (temp, virtual memory, any others) and how do I do this? Are there any concerns I have missed or an alternate way to achieve the stated goal?

Visual Studio (SP1) runs fine until I try and view .aspx source files with the lines
<style type="text/css">
</stlye>
anywhere in them, upon which it freezes (i.e is totally unresponsive) and I have to use the task manager to shut it down.
I have read a lot of questions about Visual Studio 2008 crashing on viewing some source files. However, I still can't fix this problem.
I have systematically deleted and re-included all other code and it comes down to these two lines, which is very confusing. Sometimes it happens as soon as the lines are added, sometimes it doesn't freeze until I build the solution with any of the problem pages open. I can add external style sheets, and it only started recently.
I had Resharper 4.5 installed and have since uninstalled it, and do not have anything else installed.
Also, it happens to other people with the same source code, and re-installing Visual Studio does not fix the problem. So I have several questions:
Is there any way I can find out what's happening? I don't understand how the code (the css tag itself) could crash Visual Studio, and am thinking that this is unlikely and it must be something else within my solution, would this be a safe assumption? Could this have anything to do with installing Office 2010?

I've looked at about 5 Questions here on SOF and haven't really found a useful answer for this. How am I supposed to invoke my javascript functions from client-side events in my .ascx controls? Here is my .ascx file.. what most the answers have led me to:
<%@ Control Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="UIMenu.ascx.cs" Inherits="controls_UIMenu" %>
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
function insetItem(myMenu)
{
myMenu.setAttribute("class", "myClass");.......
I'm getting different errors when doing it this way. ".....ascx does not contain a definition for "insetItem"", and my other pages that use this file don't recognize it anymore. When I try to put the js on the actual .aspx pages that will be using it, I get the same no definition error.
I just started learning jscript, still pretty noob. I'm trying to make it so when the user down clicks a menu item, I want that item's borderstyle to change to "inset". I'm not sure how to change that attribute for the specific item that gets clicked either in javascript >_< but that's another question.

I have a javascript src that i need to add to some of the pages in a site.
for example <script type="text/javascript" src="http:abcxyz.com/zzz"></script>
I want to add this conditionally on a .ascx page - if the Request.ServerVariables["SCRIPT_NAME"] ends with certain criteria.
The ascx language is vb, and there is no code behind.

I understand how to use jQuery to make an AJAX call to a WebMethod from a normal page, but I'm running into problems doing it from a UserControl (ASCX). Right now the biggest Issue I'm having is that the JavaScript for getting access to the groupDropDown control is not working. It seems that since this is a UserControl hosted within DotNetNuke, the ususal method of getting the CLientID is not working since it is nested down x number of levels. Here is what I have:
Javascript:
function validateEnrolledDate(src, args) {
var isValid;
[code]....
I'm now just referencing a TextBox:<asp:TextBox ID="dealerId" runat="server" CssClass="theDealer" />
The Text in the Textbox is being set in Server Side code, and it is visible on screen.The alert message is "undefined", so something is still happening so that it is not getting the value of that textbox...

I have to build a few ascx partial views in my MVC applications to encapsulate re-usable functionalities as well as archive SOR and SOC. However, I encountered challenge how to encapsulate the business logic that drives MVC ascx views.In webforms, the code behind of an ASCX control can handle a button click event and browser still shows the same page with only one postback. How can I archive the same thing in MVC? When ~/Address/Edit/2 includes an ascx partial view with a button on it that calls another MVC action - let's say ~/ShareController/CommonAction - what is the best way for the CmmonAction to return to the very same view that includes the ascx file?Perhaps I am missing a common pattern in MVC web development?

I have a user control (ascx) which contains a control (hidden field). In the page_load event of ascx, i have the below code:
HyperLink.Attributes.Add("onclick", "JavaScript:return AccessControl('" + hdnField.UniqueID + "');");
Note: The hidden field resides in .ascx file.
I want to access this hidden field at runtime and i have the below javascript function in aspx page that loads the usercontrol.
function AccessControl(hdnFieldId)
{
var ctrl = document.getElementById(hdnFieldId);
alert(ctrl);
I am getting 'null' value in the alert. I tried using 'ClientID' and 'this' instead of 'UniqueId'. I am wondering why this is not working. I am using .net 2.0.

I am looking to render excel from an web control. I have code that works from a web page, but when I run it in an ascx.cs file it doesn't do anything.
Is there something about being in an ascx that makes a difference?
Here is my code:
Response.ClearContent();
Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=file.xls");
Response.ContentType = "application/vnd.ms-excel";
Response.BinaryWrite(result);
Response.End();
Response.Flush();

Is it possible to use the Response.AddHeader particularly Im trying to use the "Refresh" of it. I need it to pause before it redirects but the place where the code is being ran is in a ASCX in the codebehind. It does nothing when I have the following in my Codebehind:
HttpContext.Current.Response.AddHeader("Refresh", "6;URL=Default.aspx");
Any way I can redirect a user in the codebehind on a ascx page?

I have an ASCX component that has a lot of javascript declared in a script tag in the ascx itself. I can set breakpoints, and the debugger stops as it should, but the text that is highlighted in the debugger as the "current line" is nowhere near the actual javascript (it is much higher in the rendered file than it should be). I can "wing it" for one or two lines with the real code side-by-side with the "false" line of execution, but I lose all the hover abilities and everything else that makes javascript debugging useful.
I have tried putting the script at the top of my ascx file, but to no avail. I've tried not setting a breakpoint until the entire page is rendered, so that I have to scroll all the way to where the actual lines of code are, and the debugger still stops somewhere way above it.
