Forms Data Controls :: Creating Paging Functionality With A Data List Control With Asp.net (VB, Not C#)

Nov 7, 2010

I am in need of getting the correct sysntax for being able to use paging with a datalist whose data is being generated by a SQL Datasource and a stored procedure inside the aspx(asp.net VB...Not C#) page. A Gridview or any other rigid control that does not allow full control and layout will not work so I have to use the datalist. I have the datalist working perfectly but I need to add paging. I did some searching and found a good solution. It was a C# solution, in particular the code behind syntax so I used a code converter to convert it to VB. However, as I am not an experienced coder I need help converting the portion for handling the datalist. I am fairly confident I have the buttons on the aspx page worked out. I will ask that if you se something I need to do besides the section(5) I have listed please offer suggestions. So that you can help me better I have boken the code out into sections where I'm listing the code I copied, my code and the section I need help with. I think at a minimum I will have to change the references of Repeater to Datalist.

The section I need help with is section 5 where the original autor is referencing items generated in the Repeater where he used XML. As I said I'm using a SQL Datasource with a Datalist so I truly don't understand what I need to change to get the code behind to work with my Datalist. As always I appreciate all of you guys and ladies help. And also as always I will ask to please provide the actual code to type in because telling me how to do it just won't help very much. Sorry about that.

Here is what I have:
SECTION 1 - The buttons to handle the paging

Add Functionality To Get Distance Between Cities/zip Codes Into Website?

Oct 22, 2010

Im looking for the functionality seen in most commercial websites like google maps to get approximate distance between cities and zip codes. Im guessing these sites are using huge databases with all this information already in them. It would be interesting to learn how to create this functionality myself but Im sure that would require a great deal of time. So Im looking for a package where someone has already done the work(an API) that would allow me to enter two different zip codes or maybe two different city, state combinations and take actions from there.

Configuration :: IO Functionality Not Working On Published Website?

Mar 17, 2011

I am writing some IO functionality into my ASP.net page (C#). Basically what Im trying to do is, to get a list of file/folder names from a network share and display them on the webpage.

It works great in my DEV environment, on my machine, but it does not work on the published version on my IIS machine. I have not been able to get it to throw an error (I'll keep trying in the meantime). But, it would seem to me that it is some sort of permissions issue. I have given the ASPNET user admin access on the network machine, that the folder share is located. I have added NETWORK SERVICE (with FULL access) to the security rights of the shares Im trying to access.

Creating A Website From Scratch With Forms Authentication?

Jan 19, 2010

VWD 2008 Express. Visual Basic.

I have posed this question recently in a different form, but the answers I got led me nowhere. This is what I want to do:

Have a web site that requires users to login.

Have the authentication process be done by ASP.NET (rather than Windows).

I have had many links to voluminous articles in MSN that simply did not work. Is there not a simple (wizard-like) way to start a web site from scratch and establish the objective of having users login to the site? I have tried creating a blank ASP.NET Web Site and using the Website>ASP.Net Configuration tool. But as soon as I go to the Security tab, rather than getting the wizard, I get the error:

There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store.

The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: The database filename can not contain the following 3 characters: [ (open square brace), ] (close square brace) and ' (single quote)

Does anyone know some SIMPLE steps to setup a new web site with ASP.NET authentication (forms authentication)?

Web Forms :: Visual Studio 2008 Professional Not Giving Option For Creating New Website?

Mar 29, 2010

I am currently using VS 2008 Pro for an ASP.Net class. I got VS from school as part of MSDNAA program. It is version 9.0.21022.8 with .NET framework 3.5 SP1.

My problem is that when I start it up, it does not give me the option to Create or Open a Website. It only gives me the option to Create or Open a Project. So, when I start my homework or in-class assignments, I have to press Shift+Alt+N to Create a Website.

Where the problem comes in is after I start working on the website, I hit Save and it changes it to a Solution. This seemed to have caused a problem with BIND commands being lost in my last homework assignment. Is there something wrong with my install or a setting I can change? I'd rather not reinstall it unless I have to since it is such a pain to uninstall it in the first place.

C# - Creating Versions Of The Same Website?

Jul 5, 2010

My new assignment at work is to create a second version of our existing web application. Currently, our application supports only full time brokers, but now we our launching a second site specifically for part time brokers.

The new site will be almost identical to our existing site with the following exceptions:

It will have it's own branding. A couple of the user controls used for displaying information will be different (but none of the pages will be different). Our existing users should not have access to the new site and vice versa. It needs to be easy to test both versions of the website from within Visual Studio easily. We want to reuse as much our existing code as possible. I have 2 weeks to do this. I'm hoping that this is a common scenario and someone out there has some advice for how to accomplish this.

Creating An Scalable MVC Website Without Using Session?

Sep 16, 2010

I'm working on a Web project using Asp.Net MVC, which I'll have to deploy to a farm environment.

I've read a lot of articles and I'm thinking on disabling completely the SessionState, I think this would make a more robust application, and will save me a couple of headaches (Everything I've read tells me that handling sessions on a farm isn't trivial).

There are some things that I still don't have totally clear with this approach though, the main one being the authentication/authorization process. Basically I'm not sure of how (if?) I can handle user sessions if there's no SessionState enabled on the server.
If a user logs into the web site and then tries to access another page, how can I know that the user is already logged in?

I know using cookies is insecure, I thought of a mix of cookies with the session Id stored in the DB, but I suppose that if I disable SessionState I won't have access to the session id either.

Creating A Website With Multiple Applications?

Jan 25, 2011

I have a question concerning website structure. I have a website which will be an intranet site. On this site I will have a main page that has links to different apps that will reside in this site. I want to separate the apps in their own folders. My question is do I just create a folder for each one or do I create a new webpage within the main webpage for each one? The reason I am asking is I use three layer model and my object data classes and db classes need to reside in App_Code folder. Do I put all these from every app in the one folder(on the main page) or if I create a site within a site can each have it's own App_Code folder. Also if I create the site within a site will I be able to redirect to different pages just by relative URLS(../cashmanagement) and everything work OK.I am pretty new to ASP and this is my first site with mutiple programs.
