Web Forms :: Determine Approximate Download Time For A File?
Mar 31, 2010
How do you do this in ASP.NET? Prefer VB.NET :) I have a file in my App_Data folder called test.mov. It's 500 megabytes. I want to create an ASPX page where it fetches the file, and then displays for a label the approximate download time depending on the user's connection.
It should say
File: test.mov
approximate download time for your connection: 15 minutes

I have a webpage that allows a user to download a specified file. When the file is ready to be fully downloaded (i.e I call the HttpResponse.End or HTTPRepone.Flush) the user is presented with a File Download dialogue.
Is there any way to determine what option the user has selected?
Have they Opened, Saved or Cancelled the File Download once the Flush or End has been sent?

suppose i have four hyper link in my page if user click on any hyper link then a file will be downloading in client machine. if user click on 4 links one after one then 4 file will be downloading in client machine. so i want that if user click first time on any link then a file will be downloading and if user click on second link when first file is downloading then i want to show a message to user that already one file is downloading from your IP and stop second file download. when first file download will be completed if then user click on second or any other link then another file will download in client pc. when file is downloading in client pc then we have no control over it and ever we not being able to know when download complete. so it is getting hard for me to implement by code.
i think from my question anyone can understand what i want that at a time one user can download one file at a time and will be able to download next file when first file has been downloaded in client pc.in this way i can restric the user to download large files more than one at a time. how to implement this with code in asp.net.

I am downloading file from database using the following code. This code downloads an excel file from the database which has a macro attached to it when it is opened. This macro reads file name of the excel file and uses it for its computation. Everthing works file if user saves the file on his harddisk and then open if but if he directly opens the file from the dialog(by hitting 'Open' button) then file name of the opened excel file comes out be the name of the webform that has the above code and this leads to error in the macro. Is there any option through which i can control the name of the file if user directly opens the file from dialog or the option to disable or remove 'Open' button form the dialog?

I'm about to submit my pad file to multiple sharware sites but the pad file has to have a direct link to the download file and can't link to a download page which is what I would like to do, so I can track the traffic and get the downloader's email before allowing the download. I am running an ASP.NET site in VB. Is there a way to tell the web app to redirect to a specific aspx page when it receives a request for a specific file?

I have a table(ShiftCalendar) that lists a letter and a datetime:
Shift Date
A 3/2/2010 8:00:00 AM
B 3/2/2010 8:00:00 PM
I can run a select query that looks like this:
SELECT Shift
FROM ShiftCalendar
WHERE (Convert(nvarchar(10), GETDATE(), 101 = Convert(nvarchar(10), Date, 101))
This will return both values, but I need to to check the time of day to determine which Shift to return. I have been messing around with the IF ESLE and CASE but I can't find a way to tell the select statement what the time of day is.

I have a webform that has a master page. In the web form I have a dropDownList it has PostBack=True, cause every time I changed the option I concat paratemer (item choosen) at hyperlink's navigate url property, for example I have 2 items:
id text
1 Option1
2 Option2
If the users select Option1 then concat at the url "?option=1" The problem is, that when I choose one option and then click at hyperlink everything goes right, but at the second time I choose an option the browser try to download de page itself aspx. update: even if I click at other hyperlink or link button after choose an option and click the hyperlink, the same thing happens (the browser ask me for download the page aspx)
I have no idea how to avoid this behavior at browser and it happens just at server with the IIS not while I'm testing at VS2008, update: ah I almost forget, if I click "cancel" at the prompt of firefox, then everything goes right again, until the next time I choose other option and click at the hyperlink, then everything goes wrong again...
Update (Code):
[Code]....
And here is the ASPX page

In my application I've allowed users to upload Excel 2003 .xls files, and import them into a Gridview. This has been working fine using the following connection string:
[Code]....
Now my users are using Excel 2003, 2007 or 2010, I need to allow the newer file extensions (.XLSX) to be accessible too.
Therefore, within the connection string above I presume I could change the Excel version from 8.0 to 9.0 or 10.0 respectively, but is there much difference between Excel 2007 and Excel 2010 files?
If so, is it possible to 'detect' the Excel file version so that I can use the appropriate connection string to read the data from the files?

I am looping through a directory and grabbing a jpg filename if it matches certain conditions (shown in my code snippet below).
However there might be more than one jpg in the file with the same name string "BarneyIsCool" and in this case I need to get the newest file that contains "BarneyIsCool" .
my question: How do i determine which file is the newest (last one added to the folder) using my vb.net code? the relevant code snippet follows:

So we're having this problem. A user goes to upload a file, and if it's above 10MB, it just kind of times out the page, and clears, and no good error is thrown to describe what happened. Ideally, we would like to examine the file size when the user chooses the file they want to upload but I don't know if this is even possible. Our framework is built with ASP.NET, VB.NET, and Javascript (and ExtJS 3.0), and it runs in IE.

I created a survey in vb.net where results are stored in an Excel file.Locally I can access and update the data of the file, but if I put online can not correctly access the excel file. How can I determine the absolute url of the file so, when a user submits the answers they can be inserted correctly in the excel file? Currently I use this to determine the location of the file:
Dim LocalizacaoFicheiro As String = String.Concat(Server.MapPath("."), "RespostasQuestionario.xlsx")

I am using the code below to download multiple attachments from a TFS server:
[code]....
However, there are a couple of problems with this approach:
The Thread.Sleep() is locking up my Form. I still need to make my own Thread or use BackgroundWorker. (I would like to avoid this as much as possible)The DownloadFileCompleted event is being triggered after ALL files has been downloaded. I don't know if this is a side-effect of using
System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000);
Is there a better approach to download files one at a time using WebClient.DownloadFileAsync?
