I am trying to create a TreeView nested structure with the use of self referencing table fields. Here is a simple example:
Category 1
Product 1
Toy 1
Toy 2
Product 2
Toy 3
Toy 4
more categories.. The database table has a single table called "Category". The ParentCategoryId points to the Category which is the parent. So, for the Category 1 the ParentCategoryId is null since it is parent. For Product 1 the ParentCategoryId is that of the Category 1 id and for Toy 1 the ParentCategoryId is that for the Product 1 id.
I am using the following code but it does not generate the TreeView (ASP.NET) successfully.
public void BuildTree(List<Category> categories, TreeNode treeNode)
{
if (treeNode == null) return;[code].....

what changed do I need to make to my code for it to achieve what I'm after.
At the moment I am getting a "cannot cast to type" error message with the below code.
I have also tried calling the ItemDataBound method in with the parent repeater tags and had no errors but when I clicked on the button it would just move back to the top of the page and would not hide or show any data. Also I have made the div style to none but the first record still shows its child but the rest don't.
[code].....

First, what I am showing here works fine, and I know how to do this if the nested control comes from the same bound table. I could leave it at that, but I don't like SQL code in my aspx page, and want to move it. I'm keeping it simple here, but I can move it to a data access layer later on..... for now, I want to understand what's going on when the page loads and the nested control is rendered and populated. WHAT I LEARN FROM THIS WILL BENEFIT ME ACROSS THE BOARD - NOT just for this instance!!!
My question is, how to grab the SQL query from the aspx page for the NESTED control and move it to the codebehind. I'd LOVE to also move the Selected Value parameter if possible, but mainly want to get the SQL out of the page. I KNOW HOW TO DO THIS for a GridView or any control, but I DO NOT know how to do it for a NESTED CONTROL from a different table - i.e. WHERE it fires (on GridViewEditing or GridViewUpdating or PageLoad....) so I can put in the SQL where it belongs.... and I'm PRETTY darn SURE this can be done without a 'foreach' loop. For discussion's sake here, imagine
1. DATABASE: simple table with employee_ID, employee_name, employee_city as fields
2. DATABASE: simple table containing all cities (city, cityval)
2. simple GridView that displays these 3 fields in same order ON VIEW
3. Template field for city. On PAGE LOAD, this is a simple label bound to the 'city' field. HOWEVER - On EDIT (with edit button), the field changes to a nested DropDownList that is bound to the 'city' table, NOT to the employee table.
4. Selected value is the current city for employee The PROC you see here in the edit item SQL is actually SELECT * FROM [cities] ORDER BY [city_name]
<asp:GridView ID="grdEmployee" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False"
CssClass="grdE" DataKeyNames="employee_ID"
ShowFooter="True">
<Columns>
<asp:BoundField DataField="employee_ID" HeaderText="ID" ReadOnly="True" />
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Employee Name">
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label ID="lblEmployeeName" runat="server" Text='<%#Eval("employee_name")%>'></asp:Label>
</ItemTemplate>
<EditItemTemplate>
<asp:TextBox ID="txtEmployeeName" runat="server" Text='<%#Eval("employee_name")%>'></asp:TextBox>
</EditItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="City">
<EditItemTemplate>
<asp:DropDownList ID="cboCity" runat="server"
DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1" DataTextField="city" DataValueField="cityval"
SelectedValue='<%# Bind("employee_city") %>'>
</asp:DropDownList>
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server"
ConnectionString="Data Source=XXXXXXXXXXXX;Initial Catalog=xxxxxxx;Integrated Security=True"
ProviderName="System.Data.SqlClient"
SelectCommand="QUERY_CITY" SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure"></asp:SqlDataSource>
</EditItemTemplate>
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label ID="lblEmployeeCity" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("employee_city") %>'></asp:Label>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
</Columns>
</asp:GridView>
ALL I want to do is move the SQL Query in the EDIT template above to the code behind. I just don't know WHERE or WHEN in the code this fires and how to handle it when the table is different from the original GridView table. AND the cboCity.SelectedValue, if possible.

I am using a repeater to build a custom table. However, I can't figure out how to make the table show subtotal if the next rows tour does not match the previous rows.
Something similar to that.
row1 tour1
row2 tour 1
tour1 subtotal
row3 tour2
row4 tour2
subtotal
total
[code].....
but this shows all the data in the nested repeater not the ones that match the parentrepeater fields for example tour,theme,dep7 should match in the child repeater

I'm trying to create a nested gridview, but I'm stuck at the editing/deleting part of the nested gridview. (Below is my code).The nested gridviews are filling out nice, I've set the DeleteParameter in the SQLDataSource, but I'm still getting this error when trying to delete a criteria: 'The Gridview 'gvCriteria' fired event RowDeleting which wasn't handled.'I've tried to create a method 'gvCriteria_RowDeleting', but that didn't seem to work out.Someone who can give me a piece of advice? Would it be possible to fill the gridview without using gvDomain_rowDataBound? Dries

Edit: I have a working solution already - I would just like to know why my original attempt didn't work. My original attempt is the code below.
I'm using the approach I found here:[URL] 306154 to implement a nested Repeater. Each parent item has one or more children items (the point of having the nested Repeater) with a dropdown horizontally aligned to each child item. In an effort to re-use the nested part of the Repeater I wanted to develop that piece as a user control but couldn't get it to work. I am wondering if it is even possible and if so how?
Here is my user control apsx:
<asp:Repeater ID="NestedRepeater" runat="server">
....
<ItemTemplate>
<tr class="text" id="RepeaterItemRow" runat="server">
<td>
<%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "Name") %>
</td>
<td>
</td>
<td>
</td>
<td>
</td>
<td>
</td>
<td>
</td>
</tr>
</ItemTemplate>
And here is my code behind for the user control. I noticed when I debugged NestedDataSource was null even though in the parent page load the data is there:
public DataSet NestedDataSource
{
get;
set;
}
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
if (!IsPostBack)
{
NestedRepeater.DataSource = NestedDataSource;
NestedRepeater.DataBind();
}
}
In the parent Repeater in the `<ItemTemplate> I have:
<asp:RepUC ID="NestRep" runat="server" NestedDataSource='<%#((DataRowView)Container.DataItem).Row.GetChildRows("nestedrel") %>'>
And finally the page code behind:
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
if (!IsPostBack)
{
BuildWBS();
}
}
private void BuildPage()
{
DataSet ds = new DataSet();
ds = DataAccessLayer.GetData("System");
ds.Relations.Add("nestedrel", ds.Tables[0].Columns["Id"], ds.Tables[1].Columns["ParentId"]);
ParentRepeater.DataSource = ds;
ParentRepeater.DataBind();
}
The page loads but nothing relating to the repeater appears on the screen. So, can you see anything wrong with what I have? Is the way I tried doing this even possible?

I was having issues with a gridview and CSS so I posted my question here and received a wonderful answer which lead me to implementing CSS Friendly Adapters for all of my gridviews.I have a table nested in the EditItemTemplate that holds the textbox and the button for a calendar control where I want them, it inherits the CSS applied from the CSS Friendly Adapters. I don't want it to change the CSS so I have changed the CSS inline, with no success. More importantly...
I also have a Ajax calendarExtender control to change the date for that field. When the popup is displayed the table in which the calendar is shown in also inherits the CSS Friendly Adapters code. I have tried fixing this by creating a external css sheet for the calendarExtender's cssClass property and a blending of CSS occurs where the items not specified by the Friendly Adapter Code are set correctly by the calendar.css file that I created.Is there anything that I can do to force the tables inside of the gridview to ignore the inherited Friendly Adapter Code?

In my form there are about 6 parameters and two of them have multiple values, upto 6. I'm imposed by the restrictions that I can't change the table structure. The table have 8 fields one for ID as primary key, one for foreign key and other to store data. The two fields which have multiple values are color and size. A size may have different colors and vice versa.
The programmer which have developed the site earlier used a stored procedure to store the data in database. And he implemented the above scenario one by one for each color/size. Now I have to put all in one.
How can I do this. As I can't change the table structure at current moment as this will disturb the whole E-commerce site.

Is there a better, cleaner way to do this in ASP.NET 2.0?
An ASP.NET 2.0 page displays a datalist of records. Each record can have many dates, so the dates are in a nested gridview (I chose a gridview over a datalist here because we want to be able to delete a date and this is easier done in a gridview). The parent record can never be deleted.
The display works fine: the nested gridview gets its datasource during the parent datalist's OnItemDataBound event.
The problem: the nested gridview's delete function. The date gets deleted without a problem (handled in the OnRowDeleting event), but somehow the redisplay is untying all the other nested gridviews from their datasources. The delete does not appear to cause a page postback, so I don't know how the other nested gridviews are losing their datasources.

Users can reply to a comment made in the parent repeater by clicking a link that opens a popup that inserts a row in the replies table. This is then displayed in the repeater as soon as the lists refresh. What I need to do is have a Delete comment link that only the user that inserted the reply can utilize. How do you get the command or onclick from a ImageBUtton that is in the child segment?
[Code]....
The Enabled='<%# isEnabled() %>' disables the button foe users that are not logged in...that seems to work OK

I have a presentation to the CFO in two hours. I can't get a nested repeater control to work right, something to do with teh placement of the <table> tags I think.The first repeater first section works fine, then the child repeater shows the first child section right, but the next section of the parent repeater loses all the formatting applied at the parent table. I've tried vaious permutations of where to place the closing table tag of the outer and the inner and get different results, but never the right results.
Here is my current code:
<tr
style="font-size:small">

nested repeater like this:
<asp:Repeater ID="repeaterReportListByJob" runat="server" DataSource='<%# GetReportsByJobNID(Eval(Container.DataItem, "JobNID")) %>'>
It seems my Eval(Container.DataItem, "JobNID") is not working and I assume this is because the datasource of the outer (parent) repeater is an anonymous type. So how am I supposed to access a particular field of my anonymous type?

I have a nested repeater which displays a food menu - e.g.
Sub Heading
- Food 1
- Food 2
- Button 1
Another Heading
- Food 1
- Food 2
- Button 2
etc. etc.
What I have is a series of buttons inside the itemtemplate of the parent repeater (button 1 and button 2) which, when clicked, i need to somehow add a new blank textbox to below food 2 in whichever section it is clicked
I am having trouble doing this. See my code snippet below:
[Code]....
When I run this though, I receive an error of "object reference not set to an instance of object..."
Do I need to actually find a control within the footertemplate itself?

I'm having a problem trying to retrieve a dropdownlist value that is located within a nested repeater. Basically I'm trying to create a shopping cart that allows the user to select a shipping method and the shipping method is contained in the repeater. So my page structure looks something like this.
Gridview
[Code]....
To me this should work, but the problem I'm facing is that there are no repeater items. The Items.Count property in the repeater is 0. I am not calling DataBind on the Gridview nor the Repeater before this code is reached (this code is the first thing that happens in my button click event) and my binding is done inside a !IsPostBack statement in my page load. I've made sure databinding is not occurring by setting breakpoints on the code that databinds both the gridview and repeater.
It seems to me like the nested repeater is losing it's viewstate or something on a postback. If that's the case, how can I get the selected value of that dropdown control inside a nested repeater?

I have nested a repeater control in Gridview. Right now it is showing gridview rows and repeater header for every case(whether data is there or not for that particular grid view row in the repeater control). I want to hide the gridview row and repeater control header when there is no data present for that particular gridview row. That case I handled at code level by filtering the resulted data table.
Now the another problem I am facing: I have allowed the paging on the gridview i.e. pagesize 3. When page loads it works fine, but when I go to page 2 then it generates following error: Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection. Parameter name: index
Below is the code to fill the grid, paging and fill repeater on rowdatabound event of grid.

using VWDExpress2010, is there a way to print the table definition for an SQL table that has been created within the designer? I would like to begin using SQL databases for more of my projects but find the difficulty in working with the tables (compared to other options) to be such a pain that I usually choose some of the other formats. Typical problems are simply documenting the structure, moving data in and out with some form of command line feature, etc.
