Web Forms :: Setting Theme Based Of Subdomain Value?
Dec 16, 2010
I need to setup a site so that when you go sub_a.something.com theme sub_a is applied ro sub_b.something.com theme sub_b is applied and a session variable is set to keep track of the subdomain. The idea is a site that uses themes for each location. Kind of like a national newspaper that will have users, groups and themes setup per city.

I am new to ASp.Net 3.5 and the concept of themes. I have a master page named ParentMaster in a web site along with a theme in the App_Themes folder. When i publish this website, i get 2 dll's one for the masterpage and one for the theme. Now i am inheriting the parent master page in another web project's child masterpage using the property
Inherits="ASP.masterpage_master"
Now i want to get the theme also like this. I have a theme dll that i have referenced and i need to set the theme on an aspx page based on this dll. How can i do that?

I added the following entries in the HOSTS file.
127.0.0.1 abc.localhost.com
127.0.0.1 xyz.localhost.com
Using the VS2010 ASP.NET Development server I am unable to run or execute the website.
When browsing http://localhost:2687/TestProject/ it shows up the default.aspx page. But when accessing http://abc.localhost:2687/TestProject/ it shows a website cannot be found page.
Is there anything else to be done when setting up subdomain on localhost.
EDIT: To make this work I removed the .com and in IE-->Connections-->LAN uncheck everything. Subdomains with port works are correctly getting forwarded. Nothing else need to be configured.

I have my theme for each folder set in the web.config, but on design I have no access to the css or skins for that page unless I add them in the page directive, then upon rendering in html, the page shows 2 references to the same css file.
So for design purpose do I have to reference the file, then delete the references after I finish designing the page? why does the editor not recognize the web.config and reference the proper theme?

I have a few sites that use the same application but use details to populate the site content such as title, logo and theme based on the URL. These details are stored in a database.
What is the best way to populate these details. I was thinking this should be done in the Global.asax rather then my page.master
I have a master page that is used for all the sites and had the code called ther but it might be better to do the database calls in Global rather then in the master page?

I need to change the css and image path based on theme selected..
to achieve it, it required to add code in preinit event in very page to change the page.theme
is there a way where the same can be achieved in master page itself instead of using preinit event in all pages ??
in all pages in have used
MasterPageFile
="~/common/MasterPage.master"
Theme="default"

I imagine this would be simple, but I can't find an answer. We set the theme of a page based on a query string parameter (like '?theme=theme1' etc). I just want to know if there is an easy way to tell the theme name is valid, before setting it, or catching and handling the error if it is invalid. The error I get if the theme does not exists is:
"Theme 'theme1' cannot be found in the application or global theme directories."
I am not sure when the exception is thrown. All I can think of is searching the folder, but I would think there would be a simpler way.

I'm using a flash app to upload images (EAFlashUpload - http://www.easyalgo.com/eaflashupload.aspx) which works great, but there's a problem.For reasons beyond my understanding, if a theme (page theme = "white") is declared in the web.config, it doesn't work correctly; even if there is nothing in the theme folder at all! Oddly though, it's happy if the theme is set at the page level. Problem is, I don't want to have to hard code the page theme into every page. Is there another place I can set the page theme? I've tried in the code behind of the master page (pre_int), and also adding a web user control with some code behind to the master page.

I'm wanting to adjust this code to pull the theme name from a database table, instead of just manually assigning a theme in the file. This way a site administrator can set the theme dynamically. If never done this with a global.asax file, so I'm not sure what the best way is to accomplish it?
Here's the code that needs tweaked:
[Code]....
The database table could be "ThemeName" with rows ID & Theme. If performing this in the global.asax file will cause any big performance issues.

What I want to do is take traffic that is going to shop.mywebsite.com and redirect or rewrite (I'm not sure of the terminology) the domain to be www.mywebsite.com/shop. Both shop.* and www.* are separate web applications (nopCommerce and Umbraco respectively) that don't seem to cooperate when I've tried to nest them. Both applications are in a Server 2008 R2/IIS 7.5 environment.
I've searched around stackoverflow and what I've found is a lot of answers to mapping the other direction (ie subfolder to a subdomain) but that's not what I'm looking for as far as I understand the problem.
The end goal is to combine the SEO reputation of the shop subdomain into the www subdomain. I readily admit that I might have this all backwards and am willing to try any suggestions I'm offered.

I have an app with multiple subdomains, subone.parent.com, subtwo.parent.com.
I have a logon page at parent.com/login. When a user logs in I redirect them to the proper domain based on which one they are a member of. This works fine.
FormsAuthenticationTicket ticket = new FormsAuth...
string encTicket = FormsAuthentication.Encrypt(ticket);
var cookie = new HttpCookie(FormsAuthentication.FormsCookieName, encTicket);
cookie.Domain = subone.parent.com
Repsonse.Cookies.Add(cookie)
This properly authenticates the user for subone.parent.com and not subtwo.parent.com. However I would like to do the following.
If the user goes back to parent.com, I would like to know that they are logged in and redirect them back to subone.parent.com.
Is there a best practice for accomplishing this? Or do I have to set another cookie for parent.com?
I'm working in asp.net mvc if it matters.

I have an ASP.NET Webforms site that is regularly having features added.The majority of time a new WebControl is added to the page and I need to increment the TabIndex to all subsequent controls on the page.I'd prefer a more robust solution than choosing an arbitrary gap between the initial assigned tab indexes. Setting the tab indexes using the designer tab order functionality is one option but I'd prefer to stay in the source view.Ideally, if I had, for example, three check boxes I'd like to be able to define the tabindex based off the previous controls tabindex. Then I'd only need to insert the new control and change one existing control.For example, add a new property TabIndexAfterControlId to WebControl:
<asp:CheckBox ID="checkBoxA" runat="server" TabIndex="1"/>
<asp:CheckBox ID="checkBoxB" runat="server" TabIndexAfterControlId="checkBoxA"/>
<asp:CheckBox ID="checkBoxC" runat="server" TabIndexAfterControlId="checkBoxB"/>

I want to allow admins to be logged in for longer than normal users. I don't see a hook for setting the cookie timeout programmatically or in a role-based way. Is this possible in ASP using Forms Authentication?

Is there a simple way of setting the content-length based on the size of the HTML string? Or should I just leave it blank anyway...would be nice to have the content-length ideally...

I'm using ASP.NET 4 WebForms, and can't find information about creating wildcard subdomains.
For example, url user22.example.com must point to example.com/users/user22.
May i implement this feature only with Routing (without IIS url-rewrite, or another external tools)?

My website [URL]The actual path for es.argyletv.com is argyletv.com/es/. You can access the same files for that website by typing in essentially 2 different addresses, which is bad for search engine optimization. For instance, es.argyletv.com/entry.aspx yields the same result as es.argyletv.com/es/entry.aspx.
I am trying to determine when the subdomain directory is included in the url, so that I can remove it and redirect the user to the url without the directory via a 301 redirect. The problem that I have is that:Request.Url.ToString();[URL]I've also tried to use Request.RawUrl.ToString(); and pretty much every type of output in the request class to no avail. What I need, is to be able to determine what is being shown in the address bar, so that I can direct the user to the correct URL if need be.

Here's my scenario.
I've got a site called domain.com and also another product on product.domain.com. The product.domain.com requires authentication to access it. For consistancy in the user experience I have set the login url in the web.config on product.domain.com to be http://domain.com/Login.aspx. This redirection is working ok - and a sample url would be:
http://domain.com/Login.aspx?RedirectURL=/default.aspx
The problem is that the RedirectURL does not take into account that the request originally came from product.domain.com so when the authentication is successful the user is not redirected back to product.domain.com
I have come up with a solution for this but would like feedback if possible.
I changed the loginURL in the web.config to http://domain.com/Login.aspx?domain=product.domain.com so the sample url is now:
http://domain.com/Login.aspx?domain=product.domain.com&ReturnURL=Default.aspx
I then override the LoggedIn event in the membership control and check to see if the domain value pair is specified and if it is I redirect to the domain + ReturnURL.
As I said previously i'd appreciate any comments or other ways to achieve the same result.
