Web Forms :: Check Value Can Exist In Dropdown List
Feb 10, 2010
System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: 'DropDownList' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items.this question has been for a long time ago but seem no actual answer for it except for catching the exception.I don't want just catch error instead of check first whether the value exist in drop down list. My scenario was different from the other. my data source is bind to a datatable, all is in hard code.

I am stuck at this point "Displaying a dropdown list of Categories with a --None -- Option. I want the gridview control to display 2 dropdown list one in read-only mode and the other in edit mode. When a record is in read-only mode, the dropdownlist's enabled property will be set to false."When it's on a read-only mode, it doesn't display the selected Category. it shows but the "No Category". When i click on edit to edit or change category, it doesn't display the selected category.
The example is given below( I am reading the book Sams Teach yourself ASP.NET 2.0 by Scott Mitchell. page 628)

I have 2 drop down lists.I have a very simple dropdown list #1 that diplays a title and holds an id value which is a GUID.I know it is getting this value and sending this value as I tested sending it to a label.I have the dropdown list #1 to autopostback to dropdown list #2 that "Is supposed to get" another title and value based on the GUID value of the first dropdown list. for some reason it wont return anything. I have done 100's of these but never based off a guid value.I assume the value needs to be converted to guid before selecting it in the second dropdown list.How can I do this? or is there something I am missing?

I have a form in asp.net mvc that retrieves records from the database. this form have dropdowns. in Edit action of controller it is must to have selected the already inserted items. suppose if i am taking the User information for edit, then its City,State and country must be selected as they inserted before.
So i tried in Edit:
int CityId_ = objAM.GetCityName(User.CityId);
ViewData["Cites"] = new SelectList(City.GetAllCities(), "CityId", CityName", CityId_);
same like country and state. but though CityId_ have value but it no appear like that. It defaults from first city (same for all) why this because ?
i just gone throught this blog where i found , the assigning third parameter name should be in the object's property. but let say I have primary and Fk relationship, but columns name are different then it seems MVC strongly coupled feature fail. Why this is ?

Clicking the label of a drop down list, re-sets the selected value to the first item in the list. This has a history of causing data entry problems when users accidently click on the label.
In the below example ddlContactType has a selected value as 'PRIMARY' and whenever i click on the lblContactType Text, the dropdown box Selected value is changing to "Select One" Text.
How to prevent this one. It should be on PRIMARY Only.
<p>
<tr> <td ><asp:Label ID="lblContactType" Font-Bold="true" Text="Contract Type: *" ForeColor= "red" runat="server" AssociatedControlID="ddlContactType"></asp:Label> </td> <td > <asp:DropDownList runat="server" ID="ddlContactType" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource2" AppendDataBoundItems="true"
DataTextField="TYPE" DataValueField="ID" SelectedValue='<%# Bind("CONTACT_TYPE_ID") %>'>
<asp:ListItem Text="Select One" Value="0" Selected="True"></asp:ListItem>.......

I have a databound dropdownlist and have a problem with the default value it selects.When I attempt to edit a record the dropdownlist shows the first value in the list rather than the current value. I want the dropdown list to display the current value.
I'm sure this is very simple but I'm very new to ASP.NET.
I'm using .NET version 4.

I'm trying to make checkboxes check if they exist in a table.
What I'm initially trying to do is to list the values is a table e.g. product types, and then if a product has those types assigned to it mark the check box as checked. e.g.
Products Table
Prod No Prod Name
1 Silver Bag
2 Black Bag
3 Red Hat
Product_Types Table
Prod_Type_No Prod_Type_Name
1 Bag
2 Leather
3 Hat
Associated_Product_Types
Prod_No Prod_Type_No
1 1
1 2
2 1
3 3
So When I select product 1 (Silver Bag) it shows 3 check boxes for the product types and prod type 1 and 2 are checked as they exist in the Associated_Product_Types
My problem is I cant figure out how to mark them as checked based on the values in that table.

string jSFile = ResolveUrl("~/MyProject/JavaScripts/dir/test.js");
if (!System.IO.File.Exists(jSFile))
{
...
}
This code doesn't work and I guess it's the jSFile that doesn't work well with the IO.File.Exists but I know the jSFile has a valid path because when I use few line later
Page.ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptInclude("myfile",jSFile);
it does attach the JavaScript file to the ASPX and all work fine.

I have a page with some bound DropDownLists (DDLs) for a Call Logging system. The Calls are categorised on three levels for example:
Call: 3069, Category 1: Incident, Category 2: Microsoft Application, Category 3: Word would be used to organise calls for problems with Microsoft Word. On testing the system, I noticed that there was no handling for opening a call if the category had been deleted - say for reorganisation/systems no longer supported whatever. So I set about trying to make the program behave in the following manner:
Check category ID exists in DDL before bindingIt doesn't: set the displayed text of the DDL to Category Name + "(Deleted)"Disable the control to prevent user changingMove on to next control Seemed simple enough, however no matter which way I try and do it I always get the messase ddl_Cat1 has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items. What's really puzzling me is that the exception doesn't seem to be being thrown in the code behind. I've gone through line by line from Page_Init and it never throws and exception. Just when the page loads this appears.
Does anyone know of a reason as to why this wouldn't work? (I've already tried setting the selected value to an existing item, adding a new list item with the value and setting DataSource property to Nothing - in all different combinations.)
