Web Forms :: Finding Dynamic Controls I Add In A PlaceHolder
Jun 27, 2010
My code was actually working before. I think since I switched to .NET 4, it may have stopped functioning.What I do is this: I add some TextBox controls inside a PlaceHolder control. Then when user clicks the submit button, I am reading values entered into these texboxes.
This is what's on the page:
[Code]....
This is how I add controls into my PlaceHolder:
[Code]....
And this is the button click event: [Code]....
Like I said, this code was working before but now it doesn't.

I am having problems finding my UserControls inside the Controls collection of a Placeholder control.
I have a ListView control with a PlaceHolder control in its ItemTemplate. OnItemdataBound for the ListView control I am adding a custom UserControl to the Controls collection of the Placeholder control. It all renders fine. My problem is when I try to find my user controls in the Placeholder. I just can't get it back. My code is below.
My objective here is to get to the input controls within my UserControl and call the save method of this.
PlaceHolder intakeBenefitHolder = null;
protected void lvIntakeBenefits_ItemDataBound(object sender, ListViewItemEventArgs e)
{
if (e.Item.ItemType == ListViewItemType.DataItem)
{
using (ListViewDataItem item = (ListViewDataItem)e.Item)

I am creating dynamic controls... i.e. ddl
DropDownList ddl = new DropDownList();
ddl.DataSource = data;
ddl.ID = id;
ddl.DataValueField = "Key";
ddl.DataTextField = "Value";
ddl.DataBind();
PlaceHolder1.Controls.Add(ddl);
Loading the controls to the placeholder.
Selecting a value and clicking the button, doing postback, I want to capture the value selected in the ddl. I was using "FindControl method" but it is not working, I guess because the controls are created dynamically and will not show due to stateless HTTP.
How else can I capture the values? Is there away?

This works fine without using a masterpage. What is the masterpage messing up here. Basically creating all dynamic controls. Linkbutton>tablecell>tablerow>table>panel>placeholder. The linkbutton id is not being set when building. The link button id is registered fine when not using the masterpage. Also using ajax.

I have a nested table structure, a part of which is rendered by a ajax call that returns HTML from the server. The markup looks like this:
<tr>
<td><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0">
<%-- Content will be displayed from ajax call 1 --%>
<%-- Content will be displayed from ajax call 2 --%>
</table>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
.. more html
The ajax call returns the following html
<tr>
<td class="wpss_checkboxtd"><img width="16" height="16" src="../../images/someimg.png"></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="wpss_checkboxtd"><img width="16" height="16" src="../../images/someimg.png"></td>
</tr>
In jquery, I need to insert this html for which i need an element to traverse to so that I can call the html() of that element. Unfortunately, if I use a div, for example:
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0">
<div id="divAjax1">
<%-- Content will be displayed from ajax call 1 --%>
</div>
<div id="divAjax2">
<%-- Content will be displayed from ajax call 2 --%>
</div>
</table>
the classes are setup such that the div or a span causes other issues.

I have a gridview where I in codebehind add a templatefield
[Code]....
In my update command when i try to find the "Result" textbox I get a null object
[Code]....
In the gridview there is another templatefield "Name" that consist of two boundfields("Firstname" and "Lastname") This column is added in the design phase and not in the codebehind.I don't have any trouble finding these controls using the ID added in the markup
[Code]....My issue is with the result column that I add in codebehind.

I have a placeholder to which I programmatically add DataGrids... In the DataGrids, I programmatically add TextBoxes along with dynamic validations. Somehow, the DataGrids show up, but the dynamic validations don't work. If I set them to static, the blank space for them appears, but still, they wont work.

I'm a new in ASP and I have this problem. I do some small websurwey. Random questions per page, random count of questions, 4 types of questions (answears 1 .. 10, Text answears, ... atc.) I created webuserscontrol for each type of questions and these controls I dynamicly add to place holder in some page. There is everything OK, but when I click button on the bottom of the page, I need save the results from client, I need to know which radiobutton is selected and save it to DB and make some operation, and then, after saving, this page is reloaded and show next
Questions. This questions and settings I have in DB. My problem is, how to read data from my UserControls after button click (button on page, not on my controls)? Controls in placeholder are NULL in PostBack and after postback there are new controls. I endclose a small code which is "like" my original code, it is testcode to explaine to you.

And button Save click event
protected void btnSave_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)

I have been playing around with loading user controls in a CMS style where I can change the position and order. I have come up with this...
[Code]....
It all works fairly well - but I have alot of propertys in my user control code behinds where I could inject values into the usercontrol from my base class.
I like the way I can position usercontrols from the DB, I even added a time and date section where they could be switched on and off per day or time.
If I make every user control access the DAL for the data, it means i will have one select per user control, which means including my bassclass I could have upto 15 selects (visits tot he DB) to make the front page. Though this does not seem to make a performance problem, I was wondering if there was a better way of doing this.

As a workaround for the fact that asp:Checkboxes don't have values, I am attempting to dynamically create the ID's of checkboxes in a DataList so that it inserts the primary keys into the control ID. This is surprisingly difficult.
I have placed a PlaceHolder in my DataList ItemTemplate, then in the ItemCreated I create the checkboxes using string.Format("Checkbox{0}", DataBinder(e.Item.DataItem, "ID")). The problem is that this only works in a non-postback condition, as on postback the DataItem is null. And of course ItemDataBound isn't called on PostBack so that won't work either.
I can't seem to find a good way to handle this short of if (IsPostback) dataList.Bind(), which i don't think is a good way to do it.
Can anyone provide me with any alternatives here?

I recently built a table dynamically on a page.
this is how I pulled the value back to fill in the text box in the table. With no master page.
TextBox tb = (TextBox)table.Rows[i].Cells[j].FindControl("TextBoxRow_" + i + "Col_" + j);
tb.Text = Request.Form["TextBoxRow_" + i + "Col_" + j];
Now that I've added a master page to this things apparently have gotten more complicated. This won't fill the value for the textbox in the table cell that I want. I know the value still exists because if I do this
Request.Form.GetValues("ctl00$MainContent$TextBoxRow_" + i + "Col_1")[0]
Has the value that I want to put into that text box. I know the text box gets created because it's there when the page refreshes. But I can't seem to find that text box so i can put a value in it.

I'am looking for a dynamic reporting tool for Asp.Net. Tool should support drag drop of data fields, simple grouping and simple expressions. Actually end users will use this tool for data listing. Rendering to html and pdf is enough.

I am dynamically creating a table that contains a textbox in each cell. The table is put in a placeholder control. Everything displays perfectly. The problem is when I go to retrieve the values entered in the cells. I have the code to generate the table in a separate method called CreateTable(). In order for my program to find a table in the placeholder when I go to save, I have to run CreateTable() in a postback event AND in the PageLoad event. If I call CreateTable() in only one of those places and I try to save, it says the placeholder is empty and, therefore, I cannot save the textbox contents. I've tried calling CreateTable() from InitLoad but that doesn't work because it needs to reference values from three static controls: 1 dropdown, 1 listbox, and 1 calendar control, which I don't believe have had their viewstate rendered yet.

I have a ASP.NET page using a PlaceHolder. Grids are build programmatically and added to this PlaceHolder when the page is run. Example:
ASPX Code:
<asp:PlaceHolder ID="myPlaceHolder" runat="server" />
Code behind:foreach (var country in Tables.Countries())
{
var nGrid = BuildGrid(country.Code);[Code]....
This page works flawlessly in Opera and Firefox. Internet Explorer 8 shows me the "cannot display the webpage" screen.

I have an .aspx form that has a place holder that allows a user to add controls on button click. Upon button click of "Remove last added control" the user will see the last control be removed. I have searched this and can capture the control that they are wanting to delete but am having trouble actually removing the darn thing!!
Here is my code that I have that iterates through the controls and finds the specific ID that i want to delete but does not seem to delete it due to my syntax I believe (Coded in C# in .Net envirnomnet).
foreach (Control c in myPlaceHolder.Controls)
{
if (c.ID == "myTextBox" + Convert.ToString(Session["Control_Count"]))
{
this.Controls.Remove((c));
}
}
The session["Control_Count"] is the highest or greatest value that is added to the page. (example of 2 control ID's: myTextBox1, myTextBox2.) I want to be able to Delete TextBox2 and leave TextBox1 and thought thi swas a way of doing so.

I have a GridView control which contains a custom <pagertemplate> with a <asp:PlaceHolder runat="server" ID="plcPages"> control. The .aspx.cs file contains the following code:
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) {
... {Other Code} ...
GridViewRow pagerRow = GridView1.BottomPagerRow;
PlaceHolder PagePlc = (PlaceHolder)pagerRow.Cells[0].FindControl("plcPages");
Button btnPage;
int iPageNum;
for (int i = 0; i < GridView1.PageCount; i++) { iPageNum = i + 1;
btnPage = new Button(); btnPage.ID = "btnPage" + iPageNum.ToString();
btnPage.CommandName = "Page"; btnPage.CommandArgument = iPageNum.ToString();
btnPage.Text = " " + iPageNum.ToString() + " ";
PagePlc.Controls.Add(btnPage); } }
Everything works fine the first time the page is displayed. But, when I click any pager button, including the Next and Prev command buttons that are not part of the PlaceHolder, the contents of the PlaceHolder are never re-displayed. I know from searching other posts that the PlaceHolder contents are lost during the trip to the server, but I am already recreating them every time the page is loaded. They are just never being shown again. I've spent the last two days playing with ViewState And every other combination.

I'm using VWD with a database back end. I have a list of teams which are marked off by league, level, division, teamid and then using gridview for the list of players per teams.I've got the drop downs working correctly but running into a little snag and that is on the auto postback.When I only have one option come up in a list, i obviously don't change that list and thus it doesn't change the next drop down because there is no post back. is there a way to use a "header" value?
