I am new to this new version of Webmatrix. I developed a couple of web sites on the previous version about 4 years ago.
I have downloaded and installed all of the recommended products using Microsoft Web Platform Installer including IIS Express, Web Matrix and Visual Studio 2010 Express.
1) I followed the Start From Scratch and set up the Hello World web site.
When I click on Run, if I am not online Internet Explorer opens but does not display the Hello World site.
If I am online and click on Run the Hello World site does display.
2) The new Webmatrix does not not have different tabs like the previous one did: Design & HTML & Code. To see the Design I launched Visual Studio 2010 Express but it still only shows me the code. In Tools/Options I have selected both Design view and Split View but both still only show me the code.
I've found a Webmatrix help article that says MS Webmatrix "publishes the (SQL Server or MySQL) database by creating scripts that run in a database that has been created for you by your hosting provider." That is wonderful, except I can't get it to work when I'm trying to publish a MySQL database (backing wordpress) through FTP (my hosting provider does not support 'web deploy'). Again, no problem, since it is already documented that " FTP protocols cannot be used to publish MySQL database. " But this does not excuse Webmatrix from generating MySQL database install scripts for me. During the publishing step, no database install script is generated - at least that I can tell - and there is no manual option to create a database export / backup / install script.
In short, as Webmatrix goes, I'm dead in the water trying to get my database uploaded to my hosting provider. Does anyone know the trick to force Webmatrix to create the MySQL database install scripts on my local box? Once created, I can take-over the upload and install process.
I'm wondering if it is possible to include Microsoft.Data.Entity.CTP.dll reference to WebMatrix site and if the Compact edition of the database would support it? I'd kinda love use something like
code-first development in my WebMatrix project. I think is even easier than writing SQL-s into the code...
There's a project I'm doing now which is an ASP.net 2.0 written website with SQL database. (it was just assigned to me for deployment and no contact to programmer who is AWOL :-)
Scope of project is to move everything from live site to local server and display/execute exactly the way it does on the livesite (web).
Already configured Windows 2003 server as IIS and successfully restored the database through SQL 2008.
Since I am new to ASP.net deployment this is where my trouble starts: manually copied httpdocs folder to local server, copy website through MS web developer and tried to run it on local machine http://127.0.x.x/default.aspx for the home page. from there I am getting a server error log specifically the line " <configuration xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/.NetConfiguration/v2.0">"
I know I have some work to do in here I do want to call the attention of ghw123 since he
is familiar with the dynamics of IIS and moving websites. Another thing I would like to point is the local server doesn't display any IP address when running ipconfig or ping from command prompt i simply pull out the ip info from the running IIS service itself. Lastly, I need to figure out which file/folders are really running on the livesite since there are lots of them (for other purpose maybe) on the remote server it is hosted.
I started the Bakery site demo...everything runs fine on my local machine. When I publish the site to production server in w2k8r2+iis7.5 and with .net 4.0 (integrate) pool, my bakery apps not able to connect to the .sdf file.
Error I got is :
Connection string "bakery" was not found. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.InvalidOperationException: Connection string "bakery" was not found.

I struggle with publishing 2 databases from WebMatrix using WebDeploy. On Publish settings screen I specify 2 different connection strings, but on Publish Compatibility screen Database names in both destination connection strings are equal. When I return to settings screen, original value is replaced there as well.
How destination server connection strings are evaluated? Here are connection strings from the root web.config file, which are set by hidden parameters in my parameters.xml:
I can't figure this out. I have a simple ASP.NET application that I am hosting on my computer which all local computers can hit. The next thing I want to do is setup the website for public access. No matter what I can't seem to get it to work.
- I have allowed incoming connections to port 80 through the firewall.
- I have setup my router to port forward all HTTP requests (80) to my locally assigned IP (192.168.1.XXX).
- I have setup my server to use anonymous authentication, which is set to "Application pool identity".
- I have even shut off my firewall to try and see if it would work.
Can't figure this out. Read a bunch of information, and in my head this should work, but it seems like I am missing something simple. I realize this thread's subject matter applies to IIS7 more-so than ASP.NET, however since I am relatively new to ASP I figured maybe I missed an ASP setting or something.
In my site on every load some session is made through url and single page(say xyz.aspx) is call every time and on the basis of url we create session. When i click on a href tag , page start reloading ,url we created is accurate but data doesn't change every time, means some time it show data on first click, but some time after 3 or 4 click.
I say problem is weird because when i run this on my local server there is no problem, when i run this on my project (visual studio) there is no problem , but when i up this project on my online server it show this kind of error but not every time .
I use data caching to fill dataset. There is no problem in this website since we created this (more than 1 year) and we don't made any change on this page but suddenly it starts showing this kind of error so what kind of error this is.
I created a website using VS2010. When I run the website using built-in web server, everything works fine. The website recognizes javascript and aurigma uploader. When I publish the website to local folder and tried to access using IIS 5.1 on local pc, the java scipt files did not work. I was getting yellow triangle sign at the bottom of the page indicating the object is expected. I tried to look online but i could not find any answer. I have included jquery and javascript file in the header section of master
My site contain dynamic default page that consist of webparts. When i run my project on local server in my web browser msg gets display page isn't redircted properly.
I have been running a VWD 2008 express and sql server 2008 express based system both on local server and website successfully, then started getting this error message: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) Now I cannot run this system on either local server or website.
When I run the application using the Web Developer it works fine. However when I run it using local IIS I get the following error:

I want to have a PHP login form on my website. When the user enters a username and password and clicks submit, they should be directed to a remote website logged in (therefore skipping the login form on the remote site).
As mentioned in the title, the remote site is built using ASP.NET.
I've tried to search for a solution this but really not finding.
How do I get the smtp server address for the local machine? I want to my email address on a windows form and have the user send me an email and I need to be able to get their smtp server address programatically to do this. I tried this:
System.Net.Mail. SmtpClient smtpc = new SmtpClient("127.0.0.1"); smtpc.Send(email);
creating a mobile version of the website I have created in WebMatrix. I have created the website and the email form and the data input forms and all seems to work ok with the SQL Server Compact 4 database, but I now want to create a version to run on my smartphone (it's a htc hd2 running windows mobile 6.5.3, though I think I may have to produce it to run on windows mobile 7 -feel free to comment).
There are some good tutorials out there for WebMatrix generally but I have yet to find anything covering the scenario above.
The other query relates to deploying the WebMatrix site. I know there is webhosting offered on WebMatrix, but I can't find a simple guide to what spec to be looking for in any package offering webhosting. (poor student looking for cheapest offer for trialling practise sites) I think I have come to the conclusion that if they offer Microsoft ASP.NET 4 then that should be ok for the Razor syntax and cope with the cshtml, and that at the basic level I am working at I don't need an SQL database as part of the hosting package as the compact travels as a file with the rest of the site.
If I create two websites using the starter site template logging into one shows me logged into the other.
Here are the steps:
Create starter website called website1 Create starter website called website2 Run both websites in the same browser, firefox Register an account in website1 Log out of website1 Log back into website1 Refresh website2 and it shows my login name from website1 Has anyone else encountered this?
I'm often experiencing that keyboard shortcuts stops working in WebMatrix. This is very annoying as CTRL-S, CTRL-C, CTRL-V, etc. stops working, all of which are heavily used when programming. It's obviously hard to explain how to reproduce this, but I waswondering if someone knows a quick-fix?
I have a website used by clients for reporting purposes and would like to give clients the option of my website reading their local database directly (instead of them providing data in a file format). In most instances their database would be SQL Express setup on their localhost.
How can I connect to a clients local SQL server via my website, using asp.net / javascript etc? If the client provides their connection string properties, localhost would just refer to my server's localhost...
Consider the following :Most people connect to the internet via an ISP. THeir database will run on their localhost and will not have a public address as such.Ideally, the client must supply some connectionstring (database name, login etc.) and my server must connect.VPN's wont work for this - I must connect to them (in a programmatic way) and pull data, not the other way around.
I want to create a suite of three products. One is a website, so that is set in stone. Another is a mobile application, so that will be written as an application (for whatever devices). The third product is something that the user can use locally on their machine. However, I'm not sure if I want to make it a desktop application or a local website. With a desktop application, if I make a significant change to my business rules, I have to make it in three places (assuming the dll change needs a GUI change). However, if I make it a local website, then almost everything would be the same as the regular website. Desktop applications seem to provide more controls that are easier to use though. And since I'm taking this project on alone (right now) easy sounds best. But I don't want to sacrifice easy now for easy later.
The website I want to write will be using MVC architecture. I'm not even sure how to deploy a website yet either to a server or to a local machine. The only thing I've done was set up a local website before for a website that was already created in house by my co-workers. And that was solely ASP.Net, no MVC architecture.
My questions are:What do you guys think would be best in the long run; a local website that mimics the regular website or a desktop application?
Is there a way to create an install package to install a website so the user doesn't have to tinker with their computer at all?
