Windows Server Version Requirements Needed When Contacting Web Hosting Provider?
Nov 30, 2010
We are trying to implment some forms written in ASP.NET 2.0 and I'm trying to understand what Windows server version requirements are needed when contacting a web hosting provider etc? I see there are many versions from 1.0, 2.0, 3.5 and 4.0 which appears to be the latest version, well as far as I can see. Therefore if we sign up for hosting services and the provider only have only version 4 will this be backward compatible to support our ASP.NET 2.0 forms?
Do I need to make a Custom Membership Provider or is there another way?
I have a project using ASP.NET Forms Authentication and the Microsoft SQL Membership Provider. The website is DONE. I use this provider everywhere. (Register, Login, Forgot Password, etc...) Until now, my website users have not needed complex passwords. The users' passwords were really just pins. The user could select anything for a password in the past. I had almost no restrictions for this website because none of the data is private or personal. However I have received new requirements.
Here are the new password requirements:
Passwords must be at least 8 characters in length. Passwords must be created using 3 of the following 4 character types:
Uppercase Lowercase Numeric Punctuation
Do not use your name or User ID in the password. Do not use old passwords again later. Passwords must be changed at least every 60 days. Passwords may not contain your User ID or any part of your full name. Password history retention will prohibit use of the last 24 passwords. Passwords may be changed by users only once in any 6-day period.
I realize I am going to have to modify all of the following pages: Register, Login, Forgot Password, etc... fortunately I stopped using the default controls a long time ago.
My first thought was that I need to write a Custom Membership Provider. I don't know how to make the standard provider to do most of this. I could write code to do.
Do I modify the aspnet_membership table? Should I add my own table aspnet_something? Can the user profile table be used for this problem? Do I need my own MembershipUser class?
One thing that has always deterred me about using ASP.NET is the cost for hosting was generally is a bit higher then the LAMP environment equivalent (and also a small little thing called WebForms). Now that I can getting back into C# programming, I think I am going to take another look at ASP.NET. ASP.NET MVC seems to have grown since I last look at it (version 1 was still in beta) and it seems like ASP.NET MVC might be the best of both worlds of ASP.NET and PHP. That being I can use C# as my language and template system (like I can with PHP) and not have to deal with the ultra super fantastically craptastical WebForms (can you tell I don't like them? ).
Now I need to find a good hosting provider and have a few requirements to be able to successfully replace my current LAMP hosting. I am going to want a hosting provider that allows me to have both PHP and ASP.NET running on the same IIS server so that I can host both type of projects from my web server (assume it is possible to run both PHP and ASP.NET on the same IIS server at the same time). I am also going to want to use MySQL instead of MSSQL. I am also going to want to be able to install subversion and/or git to host my own repositories. Figuring with all these requirements a shared provider won't cut it and I am probably going to need a virtual dedicated provider and if so I assume that would come with access for remote desktop into the server to allow to be manage it, right? I also want to make sure that it is easy to upgrade (or downgrade) the plan so that I can start off with the cheapest option and upgrade easily if my usage demands it.
Can anyone recommend a reliable and affordable windows server hosting provider that meets these requirements?
I know this question is related to many others, but please bear with me.I am trying an experiment to store all information in database tables instead of the ASP.NET session. In ASP.NET 4 one can create a custom provider for session. So, again should I implement a Custom Session-State Provider or should I just disable session (in Web.config)? From the comments my question can be misunderstood. Hopefully this tidbit will help clarify:don't want to store the session in the database. I want to store information in the database that you would typically store in the session. One reason why: I don't want to carry around a session on every page, especially if thapage doesn't care about 90 percent of the information in the session
Server Error in '/' Application. IISspecified authentication schemes 'IntegratedWindowsAuthentication, Anonymous', but the binding only supports specification of exactly one authentication scheme. Valid authentication schemes are Digest, Negotiate, NTLM, Basic, or Anonymous. Change the IIS settings so that only a single authentication scheme is use
I have a website running on a private Ip 1.2.3.4 with url "www.xyz.com" and which has external IP 7.8.9.10.
My question is If I want to add one more website on same server with different URL "www.pqr.com" What am I suppose to do? Can I use same External IP for the new website or Do I need one more External IP? And even if we can use same external IP for both website How do I route request to particular website.
Note:- My network is behind firewall and I have internal DNS server as well
I'm deploying a small ASP.NET (framework 3.5) application in a Windows Server Web 2008 32 bits, IIS 7. The applications needs connection to an Oracle DB in another Server, using the tradicional DataAdapter, Oracle Connection, etc.
Iīve installed correctly the Oracle Client in the server (the server is another serverīs client) and Iīve checked that this server has access to the server where the database is.
Even though my app isnīt able to connect to DataBase. The message says that Oracle components havenīt been found. It doesnīt find the OleDB Provider for Oracle or some dll.
ŋSomething I shluod know about permissions of the ASP.NEt users or something like this?
how I can correct an error. I've built the MVCMusicStore tutorial here:
http://mike-ciccone.com/Store/
The first time I visit the site and attempt a database connection I get this error:
Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: CREATE DATABASE permission denied in database 'master'.
But when I refresh, it all works fine. I'm at a bit of a loss. I don't believe I'm attempting to create a database, but I realise that the error may not really have anything to do with that. This is hosted at GoDaddy shared hosting. The database was created and I used an SQL script to create the tables initially and populate the data. My connection string works as I can pull data from the database, but I do have a feeling it will be a web.config setting that will correct this.
Does the client require the .NET framework to be installed to run an ASP.NET application that is using the report viewer control? It is my understanding that all ASP.NET web applications can be run from any machine and that the .NET framework only needs to be installed on the server where IIS is running. Is this correct?
I dont really write html code too well but I manged to get my web site developed and deployed using the built in features such as drag n drop, master page and user account authentication that make web developing almost a codeless experience.
However; my hosting provider system wont allow me to have more than one database, this causes problems becasue when I developed my web app using vb2010 web developer (asp.net v2) I used the built in web config tool to manage users for my site, now after I deployed to my domain it all worked ok with the exeption of the login page, when I tried to log in the system threw a error message saying "database not found." or a page of "gobble-dee-gook" that says the same thing
When I contacted support (my hosting provider) they said i have to create a table of users in my database file via 2008 sql server, thats ok I can do that, but my real problem is I dont know how to write appropriate code to reference the table.
So heres my problem: I just want to have some kind of login page with a couple of txtboxes and a click button that maybe using the VB code behind or html checks the input variables "username" "password" against something that is hard coded into vb a string variable or a constant and then branches to Mainmenu.aspx if successfull. I just need it real simple, no fancy stuff just a login screen that checks id and password and off you go.This must be real basic stuff for first year student I should think, but I dont know the correct way to load a html.page from within the vb codebehind,
I am having the error stated above. The stack trace is as follows:
[Code]....
Some info's:Server: Windows Server 2008 R2
.NET Framework Version:4.0.30319; ASP.NET Version:4.0.30319.1
Oracle.DataAccess, Version=1.102.3.0bit
.NET Framework Version:4.0.30319; ASP.NET Version:4.0.30319.1
Oracle.DataAccess, Version=1.102.3.0
My Code: OracleConnection cn; String con1 = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["myConnectionString"].ToString(); cn = new OracleConnection(); [code]....
I have checked all forums and posts regarding this error. They mention that there are 2 versions of Oracle.DataAccess.Client on the server, I only have 1 version. This runs on VS2010, but when I publish the website the error above shows up. I checked my Oracle connection from the installer and connection test passed. I tried uninstalling Oracle and reinstall, but still the same. The query above I tried changing to 'select region_code, reg_rom, ...', still the same error..
I've put together some code that processes XML files as they're uploaded to the server using the FileSystemWatcher for one of my clients. The XML is uploaded every hour, and the FSW watches a set directory for new files. All is well and works fine in my development environment but I'm using my clients hosting provider (www.webhostforasp.net) and when uploading a new XML file it appears that nothing is happening? It is possible that the hosting provider doesn't allow watchers or calls from the Global.asax?
What would be the best way to find out what's going on there, considering that without running the site in debug mode, I've got no way of knowing what's going on with the Global.asax or the FSW?
I have a website in which code on the production server runs no problem. The same code on my local machine or test server produces the mess seen at the end. The exact same code. Additionally, upon trying to preview any of the table adapters in the dataset I get "DataSet1.thename could not be previewed. The provider is not compatible with the version of Oracle client"
The app is SQL Server. It always has been. It has never used Oracle. Does anyone have any insight on how to fix this? As it is now I can't do anything with my dataset. I can't edit anything in there because of this complaint about Oracle.
I set up a really simple custom membership provider for my website, it is on shared hosting with 123reg which operate in medium trust mode. Due to this the membership provider throws an error. how it would work on medium trust on shared hosting? The hosting doesnt allow me to set the applications trust mode either.
I have Visual Studio 2008 installed on this workstation with SQL 2000, 2005 Express, 2008 Express and I think 2008 R2 (not sure if that is a version itselve or not)
I will call that workstation HOME
I created some tables in SQLEXPRESS through VS2008.
I worked on this project on another workstation that I just installed VS2008 annd SQLEXPRESS 2008 and I know that was R2
Installed Visual Studio 2010 trial edition between the thiem I made the tables on HOME and tonight for the first time since that install
I am now getting the "cannot be opened becuase it is version Version 661. This Server supports version 655..."
What to do now?
I can opened SQLExpress 2008 management studio and it is running.
So is my SQL 2000. The problem seems to be that after the VS2010 install neither VS2008 or VS2010 can connect to the SQLExpress 2008
What do I do now?
I can't remove sql 2000 because it is tied to several 3+ gig databases that will not work in Express.
I had to restructure my database so I could synch the data between the Web and local version of my application, which I had carelessly let run amok. I finally get all the records and schema into one database but now that I've done that, my Profile system isn't working anymore. I noticed that the relationships between aspnet_Users and _Membership (and my "profile additional items table") don't exist anymore. I ran the aspnet_regsql.exe utility and registered the DB, and I'm surprised that the registration didn't re-establish the foreign key relationships, etc.
Anyway, if someone can give me pointers on how to restore these relationships or direct me to a source that explains it (i.e., what the foreign keys should be named, if there are any other aspnet_ tables that need to be linked together), I'm pretty sure this would take care of my problem. And I just noticed that nothing is in the aspnet_Profile table. Should I start all over with a new database or is this one salvageable?
I have a website that seems to be Ok in Mozilla but when I access some pages in IE (mostly the ones where it has to contact a web service) the page hangs. If I refresh and then click the same button again, it seems to work fine 90% of the time. As mentioned, the same features work flawlessly in Mozilla.I am not really sure where I need to go to start debugging this but does anyone have any ideas on a cause? The website is hosted on my machine which is running on localhost using IIS7 on Vista and the web service is hosted in the same place. (So all it should need to do is contact itself). Its is an ASP.NET website running framework 2.0 (something)
Are there any document-databases, similar to MongoDB, that run within an ASP.NET web application, and could be hosted on a server without any unique machine configuration?
I'm asking this because the hosting provider I'm currently with only support SQL Server 2008 as a database, but I'd like to run my website off a document database.
(Or am I better off going with a specialized database host, such as MongoHQ)?
I have created one windows ( user control dll ) application and try to use in Browser using following code. But I'm not able to view the windows application ( Windows application UI) in browser.
I have a windows shared hosting and i need to run some scheduled c# executable every day for create sitemap, send newsletter,etc...The provider tell me that i can't run executable for security reason.Whay can i do?The provider suggest me to buy a VPS, but do not think it makes sense to spend more money just to run some scheduled task.
I read some blog that If we host workflow foundation in asp.net, there will be issues with workflow persistence, is this correct? and what is the better idea to host workflow foundation on asp.net or on windows service?
I have a Wordpress blog on GoDaddy. I originally had it using "Windows Hosting" but ran into problems so moved it to "Linux Hosting" since I was told it was more compatible and there would be fewer issues. I had a 3rd party customize the blog and add some code, etc. I would like now to use WebMatrix to continue customizing the blog on my own, and be able to step through code and add php etc. So my questions are these. Will Webmatrix work in this scenario --- Linux Hosting and processing PHP? Or do I have to move my blog onto Windows Hosting so that it uses IIS? And second...what would I have to do...FTP down my wordpress files as well as my database in order to use Webmatrix?
My Windows Form Control is working fine when hosted on Windows Form.It is also working fine on .html host if I use only a TextBox and a Button in that control. But when I add a third control i.e. WebBrowser Windows Form control then .html page is not displaying the control at all.Later I remove the WebBrowser Windows Form control to go to previous state and even then .html page is not displaying the control as it was displaying a TextBox and a Button control before.I delete browser history but no use. I am using the following line in my html page.
