When I publish my ASP.NET MVC application it generates a app_offline.htm file to take the site offline while it updates the website and then deletes the file once the publish is successful.
This is cool and I really like the idea, but I want to create my own custom app_offline.htm file that the publish action is aware of and put it somewhere where it doesn't effect my development site - i.e. it doesn't sit in the root of my development site rendering it offline all the time.
EDIT: From the comments on Scott Gu's post about app_offline.htm, it seems that customization of the app_offline.htm file wasn't possible with VS 2005 - has this changed with VS 2008 and now VS 2010?
So I've just started up my most recent website: [URL]
and it would seem that every 5th or 6th time I publish my project out of VS 2005 the Web.Config file corrupts and loses its connection string to the database and a nasty exception gets thrown stating that the web.config file does not contain the connection string that all of my SQLDataSource objects use.
I found this unanswered question that would also fix the issue: [URL]
But I'd rather know if there were some sort of simple fix for this that I don't know about.
I have a wsdl file which are the definition of several methods of the web service associated . I want to create this web service in order to consume it through a Java web service client. How i could do this?

View 2 RepliesI have a web site that publish to the production site after I make changes. I do this from VS 2008, by clicking Build, then Publish Web Site. How can I do the publish without uploading the web.config file each time? I do not want to update the web.config each time because I use a different database for my testing here locally.
View 13 RepliesI am working on an ASP.NET web application in Visual Studio 2005. I am using a trace listener to check the values of variables as I test the web application. Every time I publish the web site it overwrites the entire web site so I need to give my log file write permissions for the ASPNET account again. Is there a way to automate this chore as part of the publishing process?
View 1 RepliesI had made a change to the MasterPage and I would like to publish this to my production server at Server Intellect.
I wanted to know, that since I re-compiled the site, and saw the changes locally, do I now need to FTP all of the files?
Or can I just upload the file that I changed- the MasterPage?
Also, Im planning on making a change to a Class. Can I just upload that .cs file by itself?
I'm working on different windows machines and virtual windows machines on a mac. I have a project wich uses SQL server and AD for autentication.
Right now I have to be connected to VPN so that the asp.net web application can connect to AD using LDAP string to autentivate users, I also have the SQL server on the other side of the VPN connection.
Is there any way to setup my enviroment so that I can work locally without the AD, and on a local SQL server and be able to publish the project without manually changing the web.config file?
I spent the better part of today hunting down an elusive error. I was getting a message saying that it couldn't find the Index view for the Home controller, and it gave a list of locations it searched, e.g., ~/Views/Home/Index.aspx. This was really confusing as the file definitely existing and was at ~/Views/Home/Index.aspx, the first place in the list of locations it searched for the view!
What I eventually discovered was that there was a file that did not get published when I used Visual Studio's "Publish" feature (this is on the "Build" menu). That file was Views/Home/Home.master, and (as you can probably guess) is the master file used by Views/Home/Index.aspx. Once I copied that file into place manually, it started working. But I am left wondering--why??? Why does this file not get published? It's a part of my project, I can see it in the solution explorer, and it's obviously a critical file that's necessary for the MVC app to run. It has the same permissions as every other file in my project. So why wouldn't it get copied? And how can I fix it so it does get copied?
When we select pull down menu Build -> Publish .... website. The cs extension file dropped into bin folder instead of root folder.

Believe it or not, but I did not had to worry about the hosting of a asp.net site for years.
Figured I'll get some hosting for fiddling with things (for instance, mvc now).
However I found this "Publish" function in VS (vs '08 team ed) a pain. Publish to an FTP site seems to take ages. So I just publish to a local folder and FTP that up (filezilla). But d@mn.....the dll's used, javascript files (included by default in an asp.net mvc project), etc keep failing...driving me bonkers.
How you guys "Publish"? I got a fairly good host now (thanks M) so the problem should be on my side. Internet connection speed is not too bad here.

View 2 RepliesI'm using Visual Studio (VS) Professional Edition 2010 and IIS 7. I'd like to publish a wpf application for download from a website. But for some reason, when I go to Build > Publish in VS, select a publishing location, select that users will install the application from a website, and then try to browse to a URL on my machine, VS gives me an error message saying:
To access local IIS Web sites, you must install the following IIS components:
IIS 6 Metabase and IIS 6 Configuration Compatibility ASP.NET
I'm not really sure why this is happening. I'm running IIS 7 on my computer, and it was my understanding that Metabase has been rendered obsolete in the latest version of IIS..
The server is 64 bit, but the app pool is configured to run as 32 bit. Do i need to publish 64 bit dlls? The rapid fail recovery sometimes recycles the app pool and someone suggested that it may be because i am not using 64 bit dlls. Doesn't sound likely... but you never know.I switched the publish settings to release and any cpu. But it spits out in the bin folder /bin/x64 as well. Do i copy over everything in the bin folder or do i just copy over the x64 dlls?? kinda confused on that. And why are pdb files being spit out with the dlls as well? I thought this was a debug thing only.
