Big ViewState Content Result A HTTP Error 504 - Gateway Timeout?
Nov 16, 2010
I have one asp.net page which seems to return a very big content (5,648,733 bytes and that is mostly consumed by VIEWSTATE) ending with a 504 Gateway timeout error. I am tracking the http request/response by using Fiddler.
And basically, when I post-back the same page -by clicking a button- the post-back fails with thoose errors shown in IE and in FF:
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage --> in IE
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. --> in FF
Question: Can this be because of the big size injected in VIEWSTATE; and if yes, what is the main
reason so that it loads the page but cannot post the page back after?
I have an application that interact with a SMS gateway and after successful delivery of message to my application i will like to acknowledge them by sending HTTP 200 Response to the Gateway, how can I do that suing asp.net. I am thinking of using Response Headers parameter to do that.
I am having problem redirecting error when error is http 500 or http 403 locally running this site there is no problem it gets redirected to my errorpage.aspx. But when deployed at server, it does not get .tried putting try and catch in page_load and in global.asax and I have set Application_Error to redirect to that page and also set <customErrors defaultRedirect to that page also
We have the timeout value set to 120 in our <form> tag within the web.config. We do not have a session timeout set.. and we have various connection strings.
We are having a problem where a session variable will disappear (become NULL) .. but, the form evidently remains 'open'.. or no re-login is required..... so, my question(s):
1. what is the relationship between form timeout and session timeout
I am writing an application that renders a list of "Job" objects from an AJAX JSON response.
What is the best way to Render the markup from the returned data. Now I'm pretty convinced that its a bad idea to generate HTML markup on the server side and return that from the AJAX call. From experience it makes the HTML hard to maintain and re factoring the content is a nightmare, so I am returning a collection of Job objects as JSON.
The question, then, is how to render the HTML based on user input? I've seen some examples of having your markup template on the page then use JQuery to clone it and populate with the relevant data the insert it into the DOM.
The problem with this is that the template contains visible content (images and suchlike) and the application needs to degrade, so I have a repeater on the page that the severside code and populate on page load if JS is not available.
At first, I should confess that I am not sure if it is a good practice or not. I have came out with the idea due to my practice of jQuery.ajax().
What I want to achieve is depended on this design:
//Server Side; an .asmx file contains a method like this: [WebMethod] public string NewContent(string parameter) { string renderedHTML = string.Empty(); switch(parameter) { case ("person"): // create an asp.net panel with // some controls in it that has form elements to enter person data // render control and assign its html to renderedHTML break; case ("department"): // create an asp.net panel with // some controls in it that has form elements to enter department data // render control and assign its html to renderedHTML break; } }
And from the client I want to do this:
// Some html in the page <script type="text/JavaScript"> jQuery.post('ajax/myWebServices.asmx/NewContent' function(returnedPanelContent) { $('.result').html(returnedPanelContent); }); </script>
Question is:
How can I make it work? Briefly to have a webservice method that returns different asp.net Panel control content created programmatically so that I can get this control rendered as HTML in my client-side and insert it to my web page?
I am creating a website with password-protected pages in it.
I have two type of customer: 1. Free 2. Paid
For paid customers, pages would be rendered over HTTPS whereas for free customer, pages will be rendered over HTTP. However, pages for both types of users would be same (while populating specific information for each user.)
note, the URL for the two users should be same except HTTP/HTTPS part.
I am new to HTTPS and want to know how to achieve this.
I am passing some data in HTTP body using the Ajax request. These contents on server are accessible using Request.InputStream. Now i want to write it to file on server disk Asynchronously. How to do that ?
If the data sent using the HTTP is more then i don't want server application to die/get affected. So that i would like to write it Asynchronously.
Following is sample for reference regarding what i am trying to do ...
System.IO.Stream str; // Create a Stream object. str = Request.InputStream; // TO DO Write it to file asyncronously ... str.Write(someFile, 0, strLen);
Reporting system has list of available reports on a web page. When user clicks on a report new browser window opens, server starts to prepare report (winword document) and then sends it back after 2-10 seconds.
I have just installed IIS manager version 6.1 build 7600 and visual studio 2010 (latest additions of both).
I have followed all the instructions and given the correct permisions ect for IIS to work with my directory. I have a helloworld website that has worked via the localhost server many times, but almost hourly something happens to the settings in IIS and it starts throwing errors.
The current error copied below. Basically I am wondering a few things...
1. Why does my IIS constantly do something so that it works one minute and then it wont the next (this is with an identical helloworld.htm file so I know it is not something I am doing with the file that is messing it up).

I am currently trying to setup our website on a windows 2008 R2 64bit machine without much success. When I try to run the website I get the error detailed below. This only happens when I run the site under .NET 4. It works when I run it under .NET 2.
I have also tried going to a test aspx page to see what happens and it also give me the same error so it is obviously something to do with .NET 4 or the way I have it set up. I am thinking it might be a permissions thing but I am not sure what permissions should be set where. Please note this is the full version of .NET 4. The error I keep getting is:
HTTP Error 500.0 - Internal Server Error

the same application is working fine in 32 bit machine of my colleague where as in my 64 bit machine I am getting the following error. I also tried by changing Target Platform of the web app, under Properties-->Build-->Platform Target: From X86 to X64, in fact I tried all 3.

I want to write own control which can contain other. And I want to define content of the control in the .aspx file where the control is defined. I have written such control. But now I have issue with ViewState of inner controls of my control. The following samle illustrates the issue: I defined two asp:DropDownList ID="ddl1" and ID="ddl2" One of them is inside of my control and other is outside. When posback is occurred asp:DropDownList ID="ddl1 loses state and becomes empty. How to say ASP.net to store state of inner controls defined by this way?
MyControl.ascx:
<%@ Control Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="MyControl.ascx.cs" Inherits="DynamicControls.Controls.MyControl" %>
I need to send a Customized Error page for 503 Errors produced by my asp.net website. I have tried to simulate the condition by switching off the application pool (doesn't work) and by flooding my application with requests. Even though IIS sends me the default 503 error page, and even though I have tried setting a Custom URL in IIS and ASP.NET for this error code, it still returns me the default 503 error page.
I'm very new to ASP and have been writing a site which has been working fine both in development and on my production server.
However I added some reports to my site and now it works fine when I run debug on my local machine, but when I package the solution and move it onto my production server I get:
HTTP Error 500.23 - Internal Server Error
An ASP.NET setting has been detected that does not apply in Integrated managed pipeline mode.
I'm suing server 2008 STD X64 with IIS7. I've made sure all my windows updates are done.
I've no idea whats causing this. I've tried removing the pages with reports on and I still get the same issue.
Using sql server 2005 and vb.net 2005.I'm creating a .net console application where I am doing a SqlBulkCopy from a non-sql server db to a sql server db table and on the call for the bulk insert:
[Code]....
I'm getting a time out error after around 1 minute, however I set BulkCopyTimeout (see above) to 100 minutes, the error:
<ERROR>
Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.
</ERROR>
Has anyone experienced this and how to fix this or how do I change the timeout so I dont get this error?
I have a Web app using Forms authentication. I Use Timeout in Web.Config to TimeOut from application that is working fine and I am Redirected to Login page with Message on page "The application timed out. Please ClockIn/Login." When I am Logging again I am Redirected to the same page with same error message and after that if I try Logging again second time I am able to Login.
Following is the code from different form which i am using.
I am using dynamic query to get data from database (SQL) Whenever the query execution time is more than 1 min, i get a Timeout expiry error in my web page.
On one of our applications we are getting a timeout error on an 'additional details' field in our database, the field type is nVarChar(MAX).
The error seems to be happening when a user enters more than 4000 characters into the additional details field. It is my understanding that this fieldtype can store up to 8gb of data and should be used in stead of the "Text" field type?
We have since limited the user from entering more than 4000 characters via the application, however the DB still contains legacy data - when the 'additional details' with more than 4000 characters is pulled out - "Timeout Error".
