C# - Best Approach To Write Huge Xml Data To File?
Apr 20, 2010
I'm currently exporting a database table with huge data (100000+ records) into an xml file using XmlTextWriter class and I'm writing directly to a file on the physical drive.
_XmlTextWriterObject = new XmlTextWriter(_xmlFilePath, null);
While my code runs ok, my question is that is it the best approach? Or should I write the whole xml in memory stream first and then write the xml document in physical file from memory stream? And what are the effects on memory/ performance in both cases?
EDIT
I will indeed be using XmlTextWriter but I meant to say whether to pass a physical file path string to the XmlTextWriter constructor (or, as John suggested, to the XmlTextWriter.Create() method) or use stream based api. My current code looks like the following:

We have a .aspx file which has about 400 lines of javascript code. Is it a good idea to have such huge code in its own file? What is the performance difference in having huge javascript code in aspx as against the .js file?

I have code in an ASP.NET form that needs to, depending on user entry create messages in the database. We are speaking of potentially thousands of db entries. How do I protect against deadlocks, I mean apart from using Transactions and setting IsolationLevel to Serializable, as well as using WITH(NOLOCK) statement on my select statements since I don't mind a dirty read.

We have our web-based car tracking (gps) software developed in asp.net. We receive positional information every 30 seconds. Overall we get millions of records everyday. We have a historical view which displays the position where the car was throughout the day (24hr period) - this page takes a long time to load. We tried indexing the db, de-normalizing it and also re-wrting the queries - but still not a great improvement. Is there any other best practise that we should follow to load huge loads of data into a webpage (there should be no pagination)? Can we somehow bring it to the clientside using AJAX and try loading it when the button is clicked?

I'm designing a mid sized business app in asp.net / c# Framework:4.0 environment.
I'm just wondering which is the best approach for designing data access layer.
Candidates designs are:
1. ADO.Net
2. LINQ using sps or LINQ with Entities
3. Hibernate object model

Suppose we want to select the data from the database then we write the query for that. Example:
SqlConnection con=new SqlConnection(Connetion name) string selectPkId = @"SELECT PK_ID FROM TABLE" SqlCommand cmd=new SqlCommand(selectPkId ,con);
So,my question is that why we basically use @ before the sql query.If I don't use @ before that then it again work fine (does not give any error), then what is need of using "@"?

I have one Store Procedure that generating report ..
For storing the data there , i used many temp. tables. There is many Select Query , little less insert and delete query.
Now if there is huge data around 1 lac in temp table my select query taking to much time and also may be insert and delete query
I added Primary key to all auto Increment Field in temp table. Also defined Clustered index on that primary key as unique Clustered index to improve the performance .
But there is not so much improvement in case of huge temp table.
Right now the whole Store Procedure is taking time to complete around 1.5 days or around 30 hours ..
So i want to increase the performance as much that it completes on nearly 3-4 hours.

I'm trying to write a new web.config file using VB in ASP.net. I am trying to set access permissions, but it won't let me use the question mark to denote: <deny users="?" /> in the authorization tag. Is there an alternative to this or a different encoding I should be using for this character?
My specific error: The '?' character cannot be used here.
'Create file, overwrite if exists
'enc is encoding object required by constructor
'It is null, so default encoding is used
Dim objXMLTW As New XmlTextWriter((MapPath(".") & "asic" & fold & "" & "web.config"), Nothing)
objXMLTW.WriteStartDocument()
'Top level (Parent element)
objXMLTW.WriteStartElement("configuration")
'Child elements, from request form
objXMLTW.WriteStartElement("system.web")
objXMLTW.WriteStartElement("auhorization")
objXMLTW.WriteString("deny users="?"")
objXMLTW.WriteEndElement()
objXMLTW.WriteEndElement()
objXMLTW.WriteEndElement() 'End top level element
objXMLTW.WriteEndDocument() 'End Document
objXMLTW.Flush() 'Write to file
objXMLTW.Close()

I have a web form, that needs to save the data that the user enters, into a file and on the client pc, that will also be able to read from the saved file and repopulate the fields at a later time. No files will be saved to the server side, so I expect streaming needs to be involved at writing time.
I decided XML would be an easy way to do this, but I'm stymied on methodology. XML documents? XML Writers?
I'm stumped on the right search terms to even get what I want.
