C# - Creating / Managing Users Remotely?
Mar 31, 2011
I've put my site online and I'm looking to add/change user membership. From Visual Studio, I can access the Website Administration Tool WSAT and it's great if you just want to add users manually. Is there a similar way to change users once the site is hosted on a remote server? For the moment, I change the user information through the WSAT and re-FTP the mdf file; it's pretty painful.

Initially, in my solution I had one project, and had set up all that is required for asp.net security, and that includes users and roles and access rules, etc. All of that was and still is working fine.
Now I added another project to my solution, and my first project points to pages in the second project.
The problem is that it seems like the users and roles are not being transferred accross projects. Not sure if I am explaining my problem correctly...if not, feel free to ask...
Its my first time trying to manage users and roles accross projects within a solution.

I've been using the CreateUserWizard to create my users as well as to assign them roles/permissions. My problem is that, once created, I have no idea how to edit or delete their details without using the Asp.net Website Administration Tool. Where can I get some extensive but easy to understand literature on the subject?

Can anyone point me to a sample admin page for managing users and roles (forms authentication). Something like the security section of the WSAT, but for a finished site.

I restored a database from another server, and everything looks good except the users.
I'm managing all this from SQL Server 2008 Management Studio as SA.
The users are present in the databaseName > security > users section, and they exist in databaseServer > Security > Logins. However I can't change anything in the databaseName > security > users section, because when I try and make a change, and then I hit OK to apply, it says "login name must be specified". But the login name field is grayed out and I can't modify it(even though I'm logged into the machine as Administrator and SQL as SA).
Also, in the user mapping section, when I try to map one of the users to a database, it says 'create failed user already exists'...but I don't want to create the user, I just want to map that user to the appropriate databases...

I have 2 different website/applications with 2 different asp.net membership databases in the same server. Now my client wanted to create a user in one website and add that person automatically in to the other application/website/database too. Right now my applications create users using asp.net membership and added to its respective databases. Is it possible to create a user from different application using asp.net membership?

Following one of the other tutorials I have figured out how to manage users but it does not mention how to delete them from the GridView. I have attached my Page's code plus my VB script. I have added a delete link into the GridView for preparation but all I would like is the VB script so that when the user clicks delete it deletes the user from the GridView and Databse. I hope I have made every really simple, anyway here it is:
ManageUsers.aspx
....

I finally got membership and roles setup and seems to be working. I have setup a page to allow the creation of a user and editing of roles for a user. I would like to setup a page with a gridview that displays all users and what roles they are assigned. I remember running across someone else that was looking to do the same thing, but cant find it. Not sure if it was in this forum or online somewhere else.
But i found that i can use the aspnet_Membership_GetAllUsers procedure in my db to get all the users, but how can i add the roles to each person and possibly setup the gridview so that each role they have, is displayed on their row in the gridview So i would like to see something like this maybe more data displayed depending on the client request.
Username Email Last Login Roles
meofcourse me@hi.com 08/25/2010 X Admins X Approvers
themofcourse them@hi.com 05/25/2009 X Approvers
The X indicating a checkbox.. and have it setup so they can uncheck the role, that triggers the update and causes the list to refresh and display the new current roles for the individual users. The procedure listed about does not return the roles, so wasnt sure if i could use that procedure and union it with another to get the combined results im looking for.

I am trying to create a comments page for users to review and comment on an article. I have 2 buttons on each comments posted by users; "Like" and "Don't Like". I am stuck with how to track which user voted already for a given comment. I am thinking of two options and would like to know if they are they way to go or is there a better solution.
Option 1: I have created a table in my database with stores, the comment id, the userid of the user who rated it and the value "like" or "don't like". So each time I have to query my table to find out if this user indeed vote for a given comment. The table unfortunately grows exponentially!!
Option 2: I store the commentid, userid, and "like" or "don't like" value in a cookie on the client's machine. I read the cookie and find out if the user has already voted on a comment. This is proving to be VERY quirky with cookie expiration, growing cookie size and also multiple users on the same machine.
In either way, my test case of ~1500 users, and 2 Million comments, this is getting to be HEAVY on both methods. Is there anything better?

Im very new to ASP.net and have no experience with it at all.Im currently developing a website, and am confused about creating users.Im using the create user wizard, everything is working fine. However,I am worried about the security of user information.I believe the user information is stored in the APP_Data folder, am I right in believing that this folder is secure?
Exactly how is the user information stored when using the create a user wizard? In a database in the APP_Data folder? Is it encrypted automatically when a user signs up?

I have a requirement to design an ASPX page to receive a binary image from a remote call. Basically, our client wants to send a POST request from their server to this particular page. This POST request contains some parameters, as well as an JPG image. How should I design this ASPX page to receive all these information? I need to convert the JPG image to byte[] array and save it to DB, together with the rest of the parameter values.

I have a site that i have developed in asp.net. On debugging the site now hosted using iis7 i noticed a bug, i cannot reproduce this when i run it locally in vs, meaning i can't see the error. The bug occurs on the check box changed event of a devexpress check box. It connects to the database using devart.postgres sql component and linq. However, this is the same connection as anywhere else in the project. The same code works elsewhere in the project. The error i get is:
the requested name is valid, but no data of the requested type was found.
part of my code is in an if statement that checks if a textbox is blank if so it does not run the code within the if statement, interestingly enough if the text box is blank the code runs, so it must be in the if statement? i commented out all of the code and tried again and it still would not run. this is the first time I have tried this so I am probably missing something that is staring me right in the face.
I have an ASP.NET page where the user fills in a request which then emails a PDF rendered from a ReportViewer instance.
It all works fine when I run it locally through the ASP.NET localhost but when I try and run it of the webserver it fails with the following message:
An error has occurred during report processing.Cannot create a connection to data source 'DataSource1'.
I can preview the report via the web based report manager via http://servername/reports which works without any problem and using the report editor in VS2005.
I suspect it is something to do with the credentials but I am at a loss. The data source is set with a username and password but this is saved within the datasource.
