C# - Dynamically Change Style Of Panels Through JavaScript?
Jul 19, 2010
I am trying to display a new panel after the user clicks an add button, for some reason this is not working (it refreshes the page as well, even though my button has a return true) I have tried different ways, but nothing seems to work that well.

I have a pesky problem: if I change the UI culture dynamically and then I reload a page, the Resources.resx file selected was changed into the page but not into the Update Panel.

I have a label, let's call it LblA. I have a SqlDataSource, let's call it sds. Now, I have selected out and managed to get specific values using the select function. I want to set LblA's text to the value selected out of sds. I need this to occur every 5 (or as many as I specify really) seconds. I orignally used a timer object, however, for any of you who have used the timer object before, it likes to refresh the page, this makes it very hard to navigate off of the page; not only that, it's sloppy. Does anybody know a way to easilly update LblA's text from sds without refreshing the actual page.
I've read around and came to the conclusion that I need to use ajax, err... jQuery. However, I really don't know anything about the two except that they are both Javascript libraries?

I want to make the results of an ASP.NET form POST "bookmarkable", and I'm thinking of using query parameters to accomplish this. The idea is that a user will visit http://domath.com and they will type in a math problem, and view the results. The query and results are visible at http://domath.com?ProblemID={some guid here}The only part I don't really know is how do I change the target of the form URL since I'm using a POST instead of a GET..Here are the options I came up with, and I'm not sure what is practicalSubmit form as usual, server redirects to a URL with the new parameters attached Use a webservice or callback to get new URL. Javascript then updates form target

How do I capture other events in an asp.net textbox on a webpage in more of a way in which a windows app does? For example, if I want to handle when someone just presses a key (keydown) on a textbox in a webpage?
The functionality that we want to create breaks down like this:
We want to create a "smart" search box at the top of our page. When the user starts typing, a little panel or some element should become visible and it will have some check boxes on it. They can search for one or many different types of searches: First Name, Last Name, Business Name, ZIP, Customer Number, and Contact Info. As they begin typing their search, we need it to execute some code that attempts to figure out exactly what they are searching. So if it can tell they are typing in alphabetic characters and not numbers, then we know to NOT check the Customer Number box, but we will want to check the First Name, Last Name, and Business Name boxes. If they start typing a number, we know that we can check the Customer Number box and leave the First Name and Last Name, etc boxes unchecked. If they type a number that is 5 digits, then we know to check the ZIP and Customer Numbers both. Any other length number characters and the ZIP will be unchecked. And any other rules like these that we might want to implement in the future. The idea here is we will almost always be able to tell what someone is searching, but the user can always check any box that they want to search for if they so choose. For example, if a business is named "123 Plumbing Company" and they just want to search the Business Name field for a number, they can over ride it and do that. Otherwise, they just can blindly type their search and hit enter and the program will usually know what kind of search they are trying to do.
I come from a strong windows app development background and have just recently tried to do some web development professionally. A quick few sentences on what philosophy I am missing out on as far as a more robust and "Windows App-like" webpage would be appreciated if anyone wants to coach me on that area and point me in the right direction!
Also, in my example we are using master pages. So if you can imagine a typical master page that has a logo top left and a search box and button top right, then you can picture what we have. Its simple looking. But with the content page being a separate aspx page, we are having trouble referencing it after a search is performed anyway. So what I mean by all this is The masterpage.master has a search textbox. They type something, hit enter. We then want a gridview that is on our default.aspx page to update with the results of the event that was fired from the masterpage.master.
My windows app background tells me to just point to it like I would from two different forms. Like if I had a form1 with a search box on it and I wanted it to show up the results on form2, I would just say Form2.Show: Form2.GridView = whatever.
Of course, with my confusion of what the scope of these asp.net pages is, I am having a difficult time just visualizing everything and how they are inter-related.
So I guess to recap here:
1) How do I tap into more events with textboxes or any other asp.net control. Is the answer AJAX? If so, can you elaborate just a little bit?
2) How would I use the keypress or keydown type of event to make a panel or some kind of content holder to become visible when the textbox gets focus from the cursor and go back to being invisible if it loses focus.
3) What about the scope in which asp.net pages behave?

I have 2 sections of my website I am developing, a reference box that has a fixed width and a working box that has the same height as the content. I am trying to make it so the user can swap the content between the two boxes. I have the following type of setup in the aspx page:
<asp:panel id="pnlReference" runat="server" CssClass="referencePanel" >
<asp:panel id="pnlsection1" runat="server" >
Content....[code]....
What I am trying to have occur is when I press the lbtSwapPanels linkbutton, it moves pnlSection1 into pnlWorking and pnlSection2 into pnlReference. The code I used to do this in the OnClick method was:
Control pane1, pane2;
pane1 = pnlWorking.Controls[0];
pane2 = pnlReference.Controls[0];[code].....
Unfortunately, this does not work. When I click the linkbutton, nothing happens. If I then do something to perform another postback the reference and working panels become empty. I assume this has to do with the change not being saved into Viewstate but I don't know how to get around that. how to do this?
well as making my asp.net ajax tabcontainer completely fail to function. After 2 swaps and postbacks, further postbacks cease to function at all. Here's the new code
<div id="referencePane">
<asp:panel id="pnlsection1" runat="server" >
Content with tab container[code]....
First postback causes the tabcontainer to fail (javascript exceptions claiming it's trying to create a tab container with teh same ID (only one exists in the original aspx page). Postbacks then proceed to do wierd stuff.

I am creating varying number of datatables depending on user submitted query. I want to dynamically create collapsible panels for each datatable.
<asp:panel id=pnltitle1>dt1.rows(first row)</asp:panel>
<asp:panel id=pnlcontent1>dt1.rows(remaining rows)</asp:panel>
<asp:panel id=pnltitle2>dt2.rows(first row)</asp:panel>

Searching on google, i deffinitly can't find a non-javascript way to show and hide my panel/updatepanel.I do have panels and updatepanels, I want to show/hide them on the fly, after a button click, preferably without javascript, or if so, with jQuery.All the examples I found consumes a lot of code and honestly I don't want to crap out my code just because of this.

I'm looking for a way to use custom ASP.NET validators to validate input, without using UpdatePanels, and without a full postback. The validators do several things - not just length/regex, but some other non-standard stuff as well. Javascript is required for our users, so I don't have to worry about normal users who have javascript turned off. I see several options, but none are ideal:
1) Suck it up and use UpdatePanels. I'm in the "UpdatePanels are evil" group, so I'd prefer not to do this.
2) Without using validation controls, manually validate the fields by passing the values to a PageMethod static method, via jQuery or any other AJAX framework. This would require client and server coding each time I needed to use a validator.
3) Use jQuery (or any other javascript framework) validation for client validation, then if they somehow get by that, have server-code validation controls for full postback. This would require all of the validation rules to be written in javascript as well as C#. I don't care about the full failed postback at this point, because the javascript validation would catch real users who weren't trying to screw me over.
Is there alternative out there for using real CustomValidator controls, with partial postback, C# code only, for validating input without UpdatePanels and without a lot of redundant javascript?

I'm trying to include script and style references that will not break on deployment, however I can not even get the references to work locally. I have tried using Url.Content() and MVCContrib's <%=Html.ScriptInclude("")%>.
My scripts are in a Scripts folder on the root of the site; my styles are in the usual Content/css/ folder.
The scripts render like this:
<script type="text/javascript" src="/Scripts/MicrosoftAjax.debug.js" ></script>
This will not work in a view page in the Views folder. What am I doing wrong and what is the best way to handle this?
I would have thought Url.Content() would at least work for styles but used in my master page, the link rendered
<link href="/Content/css/Site.css rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
This does not work, because the Master Page is in a Shared folder, so what is really the way forward with this?

I am working on a web site for an optical company. The company works with people that have minor visual impairment up through major impairment, some requiring special equipment in order to view web pages.
Because of the diverse client requirements, we are planning to make available, an option which allows the client, at the time of viewing, to select (stored in a cookie, option hooked to an ASP.NET checkbox) that will make the text size on the page larger and remove some of the pictures that are not required.
The text size is set in the DIV tag, Style "font-size: ##". What I want to do is when the checkbox is unchecked the page will use a normal size and when it's checked the ASP.NET page will change to a larger font. I am not sure how to change a DIV tag (client-side) with a server-side call.
One person elsewhere recommended that I dynamically create the div tag server-side (Response.Write()) but I don't want to use that if there is another way. Just seems like it will be more overhead when whats needed.

I'm using the built-in ASP validators on a few form elements. They work fine - if I click the submit button (a Button), validation occurs without postback and errors are displayed in a ValidationSummary. When that occurs, I also want to call a method in codebehind which changes the CSS of elements, switching their background color to red to reflect errors. I've tried to call this method using both OnClick and OnClientClick in the submit Button, but neither parameter seems to fire the method - client-side validation always takes priority, and a postback never occurs. Can anyone enlighten me?
EDIT #1 Using orandovs link worked alright for changing the element itself, but how about its parent? For example, in C# I'm doing:
foreach (BaseValidator validator in Page.Validators)
{
Panel panel = validator.Parent as Panel;
if (!validator.IsValid)
panel.CssClass = "error";
else
panel.CssClass = "normal";
}
Is there a way to get the parent control (which are all consistently Panels, so I know CssClass will exist) using JavaScript? Something like: $("#" + Page_Validators[i].controltovalidate.parent).CssClass("error");

I added a (Read More...) Div to my repeater's item template, that doesn't contain any information.
I want to add a text button or an anchor to my item template..when it's clicked it should call a javascript method that writes information to the Div and it will take the content to write as a parameter, the content will be passed as an Eval method, for example it will eval("education")...and when it's clicked again it will hide the Div
I tried various and near approaches but it all worked outside the repeater and item template tags, but if I placed the identical code to the repeater and my javascript to the head tag it won't function!
I don't want to post my code, because I'm sure it's an easy and essential trick for any developer...so I was hoping for an original example not an edit to my test code(beginners logic)

I've read posts here and on Google telling me I need to set the style by hand onfocus() and onblur(). However, everything I try isn't working!
Here is my jQuery
$(document).ready(function(){
if (jQuery.browser.msie === true) {
$("input.date-picker").each(function(i)
{
var $foo= $(this);
$foo.bind('onfocus onblur', function() {
$(this).toggleClass('smalltxt-active');
});
});
}//end if
});
The a corresponding box
<input name="ctl00$SelectionContent$Selections1$txtDestinationDate" type="text"
id="ctl00_SelectionContent_Selections1_txtDestinationDate" class="date-picker"
style="width:80px;" />
I have already confirmed that my code is detecting MSIE. That I am getting a count of 2 input.date-picker objects.

I have been looking for the last day since some who was nice enough to suggest I change the look of my web application theme by haveing different css sheets. I have found many references to
<link runat="server" rel="stylesheet" id="cssIE" type="text/css" />
cssIE.Href = "CSS/StyleSheet1.css"
the thing I want to do is
cssIE.Href = "CSS/" & stylesheet_name
where stylesheet_name is a value from a database entery
The css file has loaded into the app fine and I know the value of stylesheet_name does return what I want because I sent it to a label control and the file name comes up.

The header text in the tab panel is too small and I wanted to make it bigger. So I included a <span> within the <HeaderTemplate> tags and though the text is larger according to the style of the span it doesn't display properly because the height of the tab (not the panel but just the tab part that sticks above the panel) doesn't become any bigger and I don't see where I can modify this.

I have a treeview and I am giving the node style in code behind.
Treeview design is as below:
<asp:TreeView ID="tvIARHierarchies" runat="server" NodeIndent="15" ShowExpandCollapse="true"
ShowLines="True" Width="98%" OnSelectedNodeChanged="tvIARHierarchies_SelectedNodeChanged">
<ParentNodeStyle Font-Bold="False" />
<HoverNodeStyle Font-Underline="True" ForeColor="#6666AA" />
<SelectedNodeStyle Font-Bold="true" BackColor="#6f9dd9" ForeColor="White" />
<RootNodeStyle />
<NodeStyle />
<LeafNodeStyle />
</asp:TreeView>
While populating the tree-view I have a requirement to bind the one particular level with a different colour. So, I am binding it as below
foreach (DataRow row in dr.GetChildRows("rsParentChild"))
{
TreeNode cChild;
if (row["NAME"].ToString() != "")
{
if (row["Level"].ToString().Trim() == "4")
{
string strColor = "DarkOrange";
string fname = "<font id=" + row["NAME"].ToString() + " color ='" + strColor + "'>" + row["NAME"].ToString() + "</font>";
cChild = new TreeNode(fname, row["ID"].ToString());
}
}
Now when the tree view loads, the required level 4 nodes are populated in DarkOrange. But, when any node is selected the backcolour changes as #6f9dd9 as per the style specified in the markup. But the fore-colour does not change.
