Postbacks And Validators - Get The Parent Control (which Are All Consistently Panels) Using JavaScript?
Feb 18, 2010
I'm using the built-in ASP validators on a few form elements. They work fine - if I click the submit button (a Button), validation occurs without postback and errors are displayed in a ValidationSummary. When that occurs, I also want to call a method in codebehind which changes the CSS of elements, switching their background color to red to reflect errors. I've tried to call this method using both OnClick and OnClientClick in the submit Button, but neither parameter seems to fire the method - client-side validation always takes priority, and a postback never occurs. Can anyone enlighten me?
EDIT #1 Using orandovs link worked alright for changing the element itself, but how about its parent? For example, in C# I'm doing:
foreach (BaseValidator validator in Page.Validators)
{
Panel panel = validator.Parent as Panel;
if (!validator.IsValid)
panel.CssClass = "error";
else
panel.CssClass = "normal";
}
Is there a way to get the parent control (which are all consistently Panels, so I know CssClass will exist) using JavaScript? Something like: $("#" + Page_Validators[i].controltovalidate.parent).CssClass("error");

I have a page where I am using 2 update panels. The first update panel contains a form that has some validation tied to it. The second on has a simple form, but no validation. When I go to use the form in the second panel, the postback is halted by the validators in the first panel. Everything works as it should when I remove the validators.

have a javascript function that fires by clicking any element on the asp.net webpage.When it fires, we have three scenarios:1- full postback (when clicking on a button outside the update panel)2- Partial postback (when clicking on a button inside the update panel)3- No postback (when clicking on a table cell for instance)I was able to detect when a partial postback occurs by using the async property demonstratedbelow, but I could not find a way to differentiate between a full postback and a no

I'm working on an ASP.NET web app where I'm using a Wizard to take the client through a large series of steps.One of the steps includes calculating a bunch of numbers on the fly... the numbers calculate properly but when I click "next" and then go back again... some of the numbers are not retained.
function CalculateFields() {
txtSellingPrice = document.getElementById('<%=txtSellingPrice.ClientID %>');
//I get all of the elements like this...

var regexp = /[$,]/g;xt" and then "previous"

Searching on google, i deffinitly can't find a non-javascript way to show and hide my panel/updatepanel.I do have panels and updatepanels, I want to show/hide them on the fly, after a button click, preferably without javascript, or if so, with jQuery.All the examples I found consumes a lot of code and honestly I don't want to crap out my code just because of this.

I'm struggling with ASP .NET Validators JavaScript issue. Following function (part of framework generated code) tries to access validatioGroup attribute value using control.Field syntax. It works fine in IE, however in FF that value is always undefined. Consequently, validation always passes and my validation scenario is broken... Is there a way to get round it?
function IsValidationGroupMatch(control, validationGroup) {
if ((typeof(validationGroup) == "undefined") || (validationGroup == null)) {
return true;
}
var controlGroup = "";
if (typeof(control.validationGroup) == "string") {
controlGroup = control.validationGroup;
}
return (controlGroup == validationGroup);
}

I've got a simple form with some textboxes. These textboxes all have a RequiredFieldValidator. If field 1 is filled in I need to disable the RequiredFieldValidator of field 2 because only one of these fields is required. What is the best way to accomplish this?

I'm looking for a way to use custom ASP.NET validators to validate input, without using UpdatePanels, and without a full postback. The validators do several things - not just length/regex, but some other non-standard stuff as well. Javascript is required for our users, so I don't have to worry about normal users who have javascript turned off. I see several options, but none are ideal:
1) Suck it up and use UpdatePanels. I'm in the "UpdatePanels are evil" group, so I'd prefer not to do this.
2) Without using validation controls, manually validate the fields by passing the values to a PageMethod static method, via jQuery or any other AJAX framework. This would require client and server coding each time I needed to use a validator.
3) Use jQuery (or any other javascript framework) validation for client validation, then if they somehow get by that, have server-code validation controls for full postback. This would require all of the validation rules to be written in javascript as well as C#. I don't care about the full failed postback at this point, because the javascript validation would catch real users who weren't trying to screw me over.
Is there alternative out there for using real CustomValidator controls, with partial postback, C# code only, for validating input without UpdatePanels and without a lot of redundant javascript?

The error message that gets added to the validation summary when the form is invalid I need to get access to in client-side JavaScript. How do you access the actual message? My page doesn't have a ValidationSummary present, and Page_Validators[0].errormessage is *. Where is the message?

I have an asp.net application with basic CRUD functionality. On a page where i am capturing customer details i have several asp.net validators to required fields. I have attached a JS confirm box on the asp.net save button for the form. The trouble is that when the user leaves required fields unfilled and clicks the save button, the JS confirm box comes up, when the ok button is clicked, the save method is called successfully and only after this happened do the asp.net validators fire and display that required information has been left out.

I added a (Read More...) Div to my repeater's item template, that doesn't contain any information.
I want to add a text button or an anchor to my item template..when it's clicked it should call a javascript method that writes information to the Div and it will take the content to write as a parameter, the content will be passed as an Eval method, for example it will eval("education")...and when it's clicked again it will hide the Div
I tried various and near approaches but it all worked outside the repeater and item template tags, but if I placed the identical code to the repeater and my javascript to the head tag it won't function!
I don't want to post my code, because I'm sure it's an easy and essential trick for any developer...so I was hoping for an original example not an edit to my test code(beginners logic)

I have a GridView with three Button columns that are set up with images. When I select my path for the image, using the GUI tool that VS provides, the resulting path is something like ~/Images/myicon.png and the image displays fine (sometimes) in the VS Design mode. But the images do not display on the running version of the website (using Firefox) because the image locations resolve to ../Images/myicon.png. I can manually change it to Images/myicon.png and it works fine on the website but then not in VS. How do I get them to behave the same way? These file paths are driving me nuts!

I have a composite control that has a couple of private fields that reference values in the cache and these private fields are called during the constructor method. Since a string key is used to identify the value in the cache, I must have a way of storing that string key in such a way that it is available at the time the control is instantiated, and I have to be able to reference it on postbacks without it changing.
In addition, this key is generated the first time the control is loaded, but it should not be changed again after that first time.
How can I accomplish this?
I have already tried saving it to viewstate, but that doesn't work because viewstate is not yet available at the time the control is instantiated.
I have tried using a private field and then checking against Page.IsPostback in the constructor and if it isn't postback, I assign a value to the private field, but on subsequent postbacks it looses it's value, and I can't reassign it in the Page.IsPostBack again because it is an autogenerated GUID.

I am developing a web application where I would like to perform a set of validations on a certain field (an account name in the specific case). I need to check that the value is not empty, matches a certain pattern and is not already used. I tried to create a UserControl that aggregates a RequiredFieldValidator, a RegexValidator and a CustomValidator, then I created a ControlToValidate property like this:
public partial class AccountNameValidator : System.Web.UI.UserControl {
public string ControlToValidate {
get { return ViewState["ControlToValidate"] as string; }
set {
ViewState["ControlToValidate"] = value;
AccountNameRequiredFieldValidator.ControlToValidate = value;
AccountNameRegexValidator.ControlToValidate = value;
AccountNameUniqueValidator.ControlToValidate = value;
}
}
}
However, if I insert the control on a page and set ControlToValidate to some control ID, when the page loads I get an error that says Unable to find control id 'AccountName' referenced by the ControlToValidate' property of 'AccountNameRequiredFieldValidator', which makes me think that the controls inside my UserControl cannot resolve correctly the controls in the parent page.
So, I have two questions:
1) Is it possible to have validator controls inside a UserControl validate a control in the parent page?
2) Is it correct and good practice to "aggregate" multiple validator controls in a UserControl? If not, what is the standard way to proceed?

I have a session state that myself and others on my team have been bashing our heads against the wall for the past week. We have tracked it down to the following:
1) Frame page containing content pages creates a session
2) Content page creates a session, stores data in the session
3) User changes drop down list with SelectedIndexChanged autopost back and displayed fields are changed using an UpdatePanel. A new session is created, data stored in the prev. session is lost
4) User posts back, no session is created this time, however the post back fails because the session from step 2 is lost.
Now, a user closes the page, comes back, and it actually starts to work:
1) Frame page containing content page opens (no new session)
2) Content page loads data, stores in session (no new session)
3) User changes drop down list with SelectedIndexChanged auto postback and displayed fields are changed using an UpdatePanel. Sesson NOT lost
4) User posts back form, success
ASP.NET on the first visit to the site insists on creating 3 sessions, we log it in Session_Start. I can't think of any reason this should happen. I've been told the frame will always be on a seperate session; thats fine, its only being used to setup scrolling
within a frame in Dynamics CRM. The biggest question is why when we insert data into the session in step #2, it is discarded in step #3.... but only during the first visit to the page!
I've never seen this session behavior before; we don't have any session abandonments in our code, and we never clear session objects, so there shouldn't be any reason for the session to be lost.

I've been using WebBrowser.DrawtoBitmap() in my asp.net page running in separate STA thread to capture web pages as an image. But I found that I'm getting blank images for few sites consistently. I'm aware that the method is not 'officially' supported but it would be nice if someone can provide me any reason or a work around for these blank images issue.

1) I found that my viewstate was not being persisted across postbacks for web user controls. I ensured that the Enable Viewstate property was set to true (of the page)
2) The Viewstate isnt being persisted on the 1st postback.
3) However, it is being persisted from the 2nd postback onwards.
I stepped through the code to ensure that the Viewstate had the 2 keys that I was adding on page load. However, on the 1st postback, the viewstate is empty. Everything is ok from the 2nd postback onwards.
