C# - Errors In Razor Pages Cause Server To Hang?
Feb 8, 2011
I've been writing an app using the awesome new Razor view engine and for the most part, things have been great.
One issue I keep running into, however, is that if I should happen to write invalid code, such as referencing a null property or even a non existent property, rather than throwing an error, something happens in the background that causes the browser to wait and wait and wait and if I do not cancel the browser's request quick enough, IIS will simply hang.
It seems as if it enters some sort of loop. CPU usage goes up (though not terribly high) and restarting IIS via either GUI or iisreset command seems to take abnormally long (presumably while it waits for the process to safely shutdown).
This also happens for other invalid code scenarios such as failing to close a code block with a closing brace.

I manage a large asp.net site which has previously been converted from static html site to asp.net. For several reasons (mainly SEO) we decided not to rename all the files to .aspx back when we originally converted the site. This was very easy to do by simply adding the buildProvider and httpHandler to the web.config.
<buildProviders>
<add extension=".html" type="System.Web.Compilation.PageBuildProvider"/>
</buildProviders>
<httpHandlers>
<add path="*.html" verb="*" type="System.Web.UI.PageHandlerFactory"/>
</httpHandlers>
Now I am upgrading the site to use Asp.net WebPages with Razor cshtml files. I can rename all the files if necessary, and use url rewriting to make the urls stay the same, however it would be much easier if I could just configure the web.config to tell it to parse .html files as if they were .cshtml. I have searched around quite a bit, and could not find anything equivalent to the PageHandlerFactory for razor pages. It appears as though it is just an internal mechanism in the .net 4.0 ISAPI handler.
The site is currently running on Windows 2003 server and IIS 6. We will be upgrading to 2008/IIS 7.5 in the near future, but I'd prefer not to wait for that. Is there any way to get the .html files to be parsed by razor as if they were .cshtml files?

Just trying to get to grips with the Razor syntax - i had noticed that by default new views will have the following code in them;
@{
ViewBag.Title = "Index";
}
<h2>Index</h2>
And the _layout.cshtml file accesses this variable
<title>@ViewBag.Title</title>
Is it just as simple as "the layout page gets fired last" or is there a firmer definition?

I have an Application_Error handler in my Global.asax file. However, I load many pages using an XHR request and would rather these "sub pages" return javascript or a real 500 code for my main app to process, rather than an error page.
Is it possible to handle errors on certain pages in a different way? Can a master page handle its own errors in a page extending it without bubbling it up to Global.asax?

Is there a way to check for errors in unopened *.ASPX pages. For example, if you change the name of a function Visual Studio will catch the error on the page and list it in the "Error List" only if the page is opened and being validated?
How do i find out about the following without running the page through the webserver or opening the page to be validated in VS?
<script runat="server">
Public Sub MyFunciton()
Undefined_FUNCTION()
End Sub
</script>

I have an ASP.NET website where the pages call a few components in DLLs. I need to change the signature of a method in the component, and short of doing a text search, don't know if this will break any pages or not. IMO, this is the weakness of web programming -- you don't get the benefit of a compiler telling you about syntax errors.
But it doesn't need to be so. Does anyone know if there is a way to run a spider over a website watching for compile errors, or perhaps some tool that would compile all the .aspx files in a folder structure looking for compile errors?
This is merely for syntax checking -- not to actually pre-compile the website.
EDIT It looks like aspnet_compiler is being recommended. I don't use Visual Studio projects for the website -- it's grown over time with my own templating system (back before Master Pages were available). So something that would run aspnet_compiler over all the files in a folder might work...

For some reason the Custom Errors for 404 pages are not working on my production server, but they work fine on development. Instead of going to the custom 404.aspx page, it goes to the ugly IIS 404 page.
Here is my Custom Errors protion of my web.config:
[Code]....
I changed the defaultRedirect to also go to my 404.aspx page just to make sure I was catching everything, but still it does't work. I know I could change the IIS 404 error to also point to my 404.aspx page, but that will not work for me because I need to capture the "aspxerrorpath" in the querystring for .net 404 errors. The IIS method will not give me that.
I am just hoping it is a server configuration I missed somewhere, but everything on production looks the same as on development.

I've used mvc for a few weeks now, and just realized that my controller constructor is invoked on every action, and that's where a model is typically instantiated in the examples I've seen, so the model never lives beyond one request. I have older third party db and it seems that some judicious in-memory state management would make sense in my intra-net app. It seems like a true classic mvc app ( non-web oriented) would allow for retention of model instances in-memory (one fundamental repository behavior is in-memory collection - re: M.Fowler). I am not able to use Entity Framework, and a little curious if it does some caching instead of always immediately persisting to db, thereby providing that repository behavior. Do I have to save my model instance to the ole Session / TempData object to retain it in memory across *numerous* controller actions? Or does this implementation absolutely require some other mechanism like NHibernate? Seems like just keeping something

This may be due to a lack of understanding of what's going on under the hood or simply a lack of understanding of threading in general. When a user logins I need to run some tasks that call web services to update data in my system. Since the services could take a considerable amount of time I thread the entire process. However, even though I think I'm running the whole series of tasks in a thread separate from my application, my application waits until the called function is finished before it proceeds.
WindowsIdentity identity = WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent();
Manager manager = (Manager)Session["Manager"];
ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem(new SafeWaitCallback().Call(identity, delegate(object noCallBack)
{
manager.RunAccountUpdater(identity);
}));
The application hangs until the function "RunAccountUpdater" is finished and the callback occurs. What am I doing wrong/not understanding?

I've pretty much gotten the hang of importing data from a database onto a website using asp.net, now I want to do the reverse.I want a site that the user logs into and makes 4 different selections from 4 drop-down lists and those choices are recorded onto the database. I've worked out the log in part (it was actually really easy...) but I wanted to know a good source to learn about exporting data.

I am battling a strange error. I have a form, formA, that has a modal popup extender to show a panel containing a gridview. One of the columns on the gridview is a link button that launch a new form, formB, in a new window (ie. the link contains target=_blank).
The code runs as expected. That is, the modal popup displays the grid and clicking the hyperlink launches the page in a separate window. When you close the new page's window, as expected formA is still displaying the modal popup. If you close this modal popup it goes away as expected. Now, the wierd part. If you click on a control on FormA that causes a postback, the load event fires, but the postback event (ex button_click) handler is never called. The app is essentially hung. The only way to regain control is kill the application. This hang only occurs if you click on the hyperlink. If you just open and close the modal popup there are no problems.

I've created a new web application in Visual Studio 2008. Then I added a button, and in the Button1_Click event I put a redirect statement to a website. This is the only code I've added to the default app. But when I run this application on my development server and click on the button, a browser window opens and then permanently hangs without showing the page content.This is a simplified version of a problem I'm having in another app. I can't get past this. Why does this resonse.redirect statement cause the browser (I'm using IE8 and Windows Vista) to hang?

ByVal e
As EventArgs)
Handles Button1.Click
Me.Response.Redirect("http://www.microsoft.com")

I'm hoping someone else has experienced this and has some suggestions. The actual dcms process goes pretty quickly, but in between projects it hangs after printing: Building: XXX.YYY.ZZZ (Debug) After a few minutes (been 10 so far on this current run), it jumps to:
Performing main compilation...
/Library/Frameworks/Mono.framework/Versions/2.10.1/bin/dmcs /noconfig "/...
Build complete -- 0 errors, 0 warnings
Building: XXX.YYY.ZZZ (Debug)
Then hangs again for another few minutes. This is a sln file with 29 csproj projects in it that was originally created in Visual Studio 2010. I'm wondering if there is a better way to set this up - potentially a native MD file format?

I have a C# web forms ASP.NET 4.0 web application that uses Routing for URLs for some reason custom errors defined in the system.web section of my web.config is entirely ignored and it will fall back the IIS errors.
This gets entirely ignored
[code]....
This would be a minor inconvenience except that by the fact it falls back to IIS native instead of my application it completely circumvents Elmah logging my 404 exceptions correctly.

I'm trying to import csv file that that uses double qoutes from the text qualifer but doesn't use any qualifiers for the numbers or null fields. The data looks like this:
1,"Jack","Smith",23,
2,"Susan","Smith",,
3,"Mike","Smith",,
2,"Chris","Smith", 18,
The command I'm using is:
[Code]....
I keep getting "Bulk load data conversion error (type mismatch or invalid character for the specified codepage)" when it tries to insert null from the csv into a numeric data type.
I tried changing the codepage, datafiletype, fieldterminator, formatfile but I still can't get it to work.

When setting up asp.net error handlers for things like 404 errors, it is more 'efficient' to do this in IIS, or handle it in the Global.asax Application_Error event? I know the latter will be called, and I want to log this information in a database, but should I then just return without any redirect and let IIS do the redirect, or would it be better to do a response.redirect inside application_error once we've logged it?

We have been receiving reports of the following server error periodically from users.
[OutOfMemoryException: Exception of type System.OutOfMemoryException was thrown.]
[HttpException (0x80004005): Unable to serialize the session state.]
Please note that non-serializable objects or MarshalByRef objects are not permitted when session state mode is "StateServer" or "SQLServer".
Once in a state where this error appears, it appears to be hit or miss whether the errors are reproducible locally. If they are, then we can usually reproduce them for a couple minutes, but not on every page hit. This usually tapers off on its own and usually has resolved itself by the time we get back in contact with the users. The Web Service has around 90-100 active connections during business hours. The only other site on this server is the staging version of this site, which gets hit very infrequently. The Session State is stored on the same SQLServer instance as the application database which is housed on a fairly large cluster of virtual machines.
Neither the Web Server or the SQLServer seemed to be taxed (either processor or memory-wise) while this is going on. The distribution of which pages are erroring seems to be comparable to the normal distribution for each page. There doesn't appear to be any pattern in terms of times of occurrence. We do have less errors on average on weekends (which correlates to normal site load), but even this appears to not be consistent. There also doesn't appear to be a correlation between the errors logged and any kind of logged performance monitor events. This includes an array of perfmon counters including:
.NET CLR Jit(w3wp)
otal # of IL Bytes Jitted
.NET CLR Jit(w3wp)IL Bytes Jitted / sec
.NET CLR Jit(w3wp)\% Time in Jit

The only pattern I can see in the logs doesn't correlate to the occurrence of these errors, but is the only pattern I can see. Looking at the perfmon logs we are seeing a pattern where the "Total # of IL Bytes Jitted", "IL Bytes Jitted / sec", "% Time in Jit", "# of Methods Jitted", and "# of IL Bytes Jitted" counters for the staging site (which shouldn't be getting any traffic) doesn't pull data for a 20-50 minute period after which there is an immediate spike in "IL Bytes Jitted / sec" and a jump in "% Time in Jit" for 2-20 minute of up to 99% for the main site.

When I build my program, if there's one error that prevents it from running, instead of just getting the one error I'll get around 50 additional errors in addition to the real one such as:
Error 27 Validation (XHTML 1.0 Transitional): This name contains uppercase characters, which is not allowed.
Is there any way to not show these?

I am running an Update statement against an SQL database on server 2008. The update runs but does not update the record, but returns no errors.The database is part of a commercial help desk package called TrackIt 8.5 which was just a fresh install on a new web server and a new sql server. The update is running from a web form we use to automatically create active directory accounts. After the account is created the web form closes out the work order in the Trackit db. This was working fine when the system was running on Server 2003 and SQL server 2005. Running Trackit version 7.02.The login use to access the database has full permissions to read and write to the database, just as it did on the old server which never had an issue updating. Odd thing is, if I log onto the SQL server and make a change to any single field in that record. I can then run the web form and it updates the record normally.

And when I press OK a second dialog reports this error:>unable to connect to the asp.net development server. I reinstalled, repaired and re registered msdbg2.dll and edited hosts file but still get this error. I need to debug an application but I can't. This error is on a 'Win 2003 server enrterprise service pack 1' with a vs2008 team system installation. What can I do to remove this error and run and debug my application?

I am using JQuery for all of my client side validation and Asp.net validator controls for all of my server side validation. I am using an errorlabelcontainer to store the client side validations in a summary at the top of the page, which is the requirement. All works well. My problem is, I want to display the server side asp.net errors in the same errorlabelcontainer OR display all of the client side errors in the validation summary. Either way, Both errors need to be in the same place/div. Any ideas on how to do this? I thought of maybe using the asp.net validation summary as the errorcontainer in JQuery, but I cannot find the summary. This is what I have right now.
