C# - Getting No Postback On Button? Tied It To Javascript Which Is Tied To A Div
Mar 30, 2011
Im getting no postback on my button? I have it tied to Javascript like so:
<script type="text/javascript">
function confirm_delete()
{
if (confirm("Are you sure you want to delete this comment?")==true)
return true;
else
return false;
}
</script>
<p>
<asp:Button ID="btn" OnClientClick="if(confirm_delete()){/* post back*/}else{return false;};" OnClick="btnDelete_Click" runat="server" CssClass="Btn" Text="delete"/>
But when I click ok on confirm no postback is initiated, its initiated if I click the button manually?
private void PopulateWallPosts(string userId)
{
using (OdbcConnection cn = new OdbcConnection("Driver={MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver}; Server=localhost; Database=gymwebsite2; User=root; Password=commando;"))
{
cn.Open();
using (OdbcCommand cmd = new OdbcCommand("SELECT idWallPosting, wp.WallPostings, p.PicturePath FROM WallPosting wp LEFT JOIN User u ON u.UserID = wp.UserID LEFT JOIN Pictures p ON p.UserID = u.UserID WHERE wp.UserID=" + userId + " ORDER BY idWallPosting DESC", cn))
{
//("SELECT wp.WallPostings, p.PicturePath FROM WallPosting wp LEFT JOIN [User] u ON u.UserID = wp.UserID LEFT JOIN Pictures p ON p.UserID = u.UserID WHERE UserID=" + userId + " ORDER BY idWallPosting DESC", cn))
using (OdbcDataReader reader = cmd.ExecuteReader())
{
test1.Controls.Clear();
while (reader.Read())
{
System.Web.UI.HtmlControls.HtmlGenericControl div = new System.Web.UI.HtmlControls.HtmlGenericControl("div");
div.Attributes["class"] = "test";
div.ID = String.Format("{0}", reader.GetString(0));
// this line is responsible, problem here and my sqlsntax, im trying to set the SELECT idWallPosting for the div ID
Image img = new Image();
img.ImageUrl = String.Format("{0}", reader.GetString(2));
img.AlternateText = "Test image";
div.Controls.Add(img);
div.Controls.Add(ParseControl(String.Format(" " + "{0}", reader.GetString(1))));
div.Attributes.Add("onclick", "return confirm_delete();");
div.Style["clear"] = "both";
test1.Controls.Add(div);
}
}
}
}
}
protected void btnDelete_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
string id = "ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_ContentPlaceHolder2_26";
string[] idFragments = id.Split('_');
id = idFragments[idFragments.Length - 1];
//serverside code if confirm was pressed.
using (OdbcConnection cn = new OdbcConnection("Driver={MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver}; Server=localhost; Database=gymwebsite2; User=root; Password=commando;"))
{
cn.Open();
using (OdbcCommand cmd = new OdbcCommand("DELETE FROM WallPosting WHERE idWallPosting = " + id + ")", cn))
{
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
}
}
//PopulateWallPosts();
}
EDIT: Tryed this,
function confirm_delete()
{
if (confirm("Are you sure you want to delete this comment?")==true)
return true;
else
return false;
}
</script>
<p>
<asp:Button ID="btn" OnClientClick="return confirm_delete();" OnClick="btnDelete_Click" runat="server" CssClass="Btn" Text="delete"/>
still no postback

I'm currently reading a lot about node.js. There is a frequent comparison between servers using a traditional thread per request model (Apache), and servers that use an event loop (Nginx, node, Tornado).
I would like to learn in detail about how a request is processed in ASP.NET - from the point it is received in http.sys all the way up to it being processed in ASP.NET itself. I've found the MSDN documentation on http.sys and IIS a little lacking, but perhaps my google-fu is weak today. So far, the best resource I have found is a post on Thomas Marquardt's Blog.
Could anyone shed more light on the topic, or point me to any other resources?

So there is a a table and a text box in one of the cells
<td>
<asp:TextBox ID="tbSomeTextBox" Columns="5" runat="server"> %
</td>
This textbox gets shown if a certain selection is made in a drop down. The problem is that I would like the "%" character to also be hidden or shown with the textbox.
I have tried putting the whole textbox control inside a DIVand in my JQuery hiding the DIV at the same time I hid the textbox.
<td>
<div id="divSomeDIV"><asp:TextBox ID="tbSomeTextBox" Columns="5" runat="server"> % </div
</td>
But I get an error in my java script that id="divSomeDIV" doesn't exist in the current context.
$("#<%=divSomeDiv.ClientID%>").hide();
Wrapping that single character in a asp:Label seems like overkill.

I have a GridView tied to an XmlDataSource to take advantage of the edit/update/delete capabilities GridView inherently offers. XmlDataSource offers no update event handling so that must be performed manually. I have no problem with this. My problem is how/where can I catch this update event to perform my custom handling.

Curious what the best practice is for returning errors to a view from a controller where the error isn't really a validation error, but more like "user not found" or "service timeout" type of errors. (in ASP.NET MVC2 framework)
I've been adding them to the ModelState's model errors, but that doesn't seem appropriate. (although easy to implement and maintain)
Example - A user tries to log in, and their credentials do not match a known user.

I'm using Javascript to create a DIV element and open up a new page by using onclientclick. This works great. Now, I need to write to it from the server side and this element must be created before it is posted back.
How do I get the javascript to execute before the postback?
Currently, I have to press the button twice because the element doesn't exist to write too on the first click.
To be clear, I need this to execute before the "OnClick" of the button.
Update: It looks like the Javascript function is called before the postback but the element is not updated until I run the second postback.
Update: Unfortunately it is a bit more complicated then this.
I'm creating a div tag in javascript to open a new window. Inside the div tag, I'm using a databinding syntax <%=Preview%> so that I can get access to this element on the server side. From the server side, I'm injecting the code.
I'm thinking this may be a chicken-egg problem but not sure.
UPDATE!
It is not the Javascript not running first. It is the databinding mechanism which is reading the blank variable before I'm able to set it.

I have two radio buttons that are disabled with javascript when the page loads. RadioButton1 is checked by default. When I click the button to do a postback, the RadioButton1 is no longer checked.
Here's my code sample. The code behind is empty.
<asp:RadioButton ID="RadioButton1" runat="server" GroupName="group" Checked="true"/>
<asp:RadioButton ID="RadioButton2" runat="server" GroupName="group" />
<asp:Button ID="Button1" runat="server" Text="Button"></asp:Button>
<script type="text/javascript">
window.onload = function () {
var RadioButton1 = document.getElementById('<%= RadioButton1.ClientID %>');
var RadioButton2 = document.getElementById('<%= RadioButton2.ClientID %>');
RadioButton1.disabled = true;
RadioButton2.disabled = true;
};
</script>

My current structure:
1. An asp.net radio-button list with autopostback = true. The radio-button list has 2 items - Yes and No.
2. An asp panel that has 2 textbox.
Current behaviour:
When the user clicks on the radio-button list (i.e. Yes), the panel is made visible.
My clients wants the same functionality without the page refresh (i.e. the postback).

I have a couple of fields on a form that will be populated with default values. I would like to put a button that will allow me to reset those fields to their default values if they have been modified. However I would like to avoid the postback so that I don't have data being sent to the database. Is it possible to add a javascript hook such that when that button is pressed I can pull the default values and populate those fields in javascript?

I have a script that runs during the Page_Load() event which checks a database table to make sure that the user is still owns the lock on the page. If they no longer own the lock, I disable all the controls on the page and display an
error message.My thinking was that by disabling all controls during Page_Load() I could prevent any PostBack events from occuring. For example, I have a button on the page called "Save and Quit"

I need to change a standard HTML Input button to a Link button but am running into problems because the existing
code calls a javascript function. The function basically does the same as the browser back button. When I add the code and
set the property runat="server" I get a "CS1026: ) expected".
Quite new to ASP,net (VS2010) so could be going about this the wrong way.

I have custom control with ASP.Net validators.
writer.AddAttribute(HtmlTextWriterAttribute.Onclick, "javascript:return DoSmth();");
function DoSmth() {
var cBox = confirm("Are you sure?");
if (!cBox) {
return false;
}
else {
//Invoke validation
}
When I push button submit, I call confirm box. If I press cancel - all right. But if I press ok, I need to do validation. How can I stop postback and do valiadation?

I couldn't find something similar in SO.
In ASP.NET, is there any way that on cue I can cause a partial postback with Javascript in an UpdatePanel?
I tried __doPostBack() but it does a full postback. I can trick it with a dummy button and fire click() then handle the partial postback that way, but I want a more graceful way than trickery.
