I am running a LINQ query which populates a list used by a DropDownList, I need to insert an "Unassigned" value to the list. The function below queries the values correctly from the db but does not insert the "Unaasinged" value to the list.

I have a dropdown list with hard coded values:

I want to use this to insert and edit values from a db. For example when adding a record the user selects 'One Day Shoots' and 1 gets inserted into the database. Then if the user goes to edit the page since the value in the db is 1 then the 'One Day Shoots' is selected.
One way I considered accomplishing this was by using a hidden feild - when the user selects something in the dropdown list the field is updated with the value, then when the user actually adds the record the value in the feild is submitted. I'm pretty sure this would work but is there a better way?
The simple website I am trying to build is a list of banks with their corresponding website. I also wanted the ability to add banks/website with the use of some text boxes and a button click event. I've got this fully working until I publish it. When I try to run it on the webserver it say it can not find the specified file c:windowssystem32inetservURLs.xml Now I understand the problem I just can not seem to fix it with out hard coding the path of the file into code.

I built a crystal report using crystal report 2008, and have it working fine aganist my test db. in my c# code that loads the report I put this in:

but problem is when i pushed this change to production, the report was stilling pulling test data, even though the web.config entry (LocalSqlServer) was updated in production to use production db. Could I have setup the crystal file incorrectly? When I'm creating the crystal file and connecting it to the db, is there something that I need to check or uncheck to tell it I'm going to dynamically supply the db connection rather than having it use the one I used to setup the report?
As the title says then the question is relative simple however I cant decide whether a resource file with strings in is better than hard-coded strings...

I used the GUI to generate this form (see below), the connectionstring:Prod1ConnectionString that is stored in the web config file is hard coded. I want to change that I use the connection string that is passed as a Session parameter. I've been looking for hours for an example of how to remove the connectionstring from the web code and place the proper code in code behind script on the load_page event.

I need to know what would be the best choice of array to use given the following specifications. This array's size will be predermined upon the loading of the appication. All I want to do is be able to add values to this array and replace preexisting array items with new values without the array changing size. Someone suggested that I use a Dictionary Array Object? Within my listview i have certain things that may not have a value returned.. I want to replace the empty fields with a value.
How can i format or replace my <%#Eval("contract_maintenance_period")%> with "N/A"
So if the <%#Eval("contract_maintenance_period")%> is empty, then in its place i want to display "N/A"

But when i bind this datasource with the gridview i am seeing the values being converted into float. i am using Text='<% # Bind("Quantity") %' I wanna that to be displayed as int, with out zero'seg: let the value be 233, when i bind that its getting displayed as 233.00

4: PersonInfo.aspx is literally empty since I am injecting html from code-behind.
When the PersonInfo.aspx is called the html-template markup with appropriate values in the placeholder will be displayed. Also there are chances I would like to send the final markup in an html email (though that is not part of the question as I know how to email).
Is this the best way to fill values in my html-template or is the any other better alternative?
Note: This is a very simple sample example. My class is very complex involving objects as properties and also my html template have 40-50 placeholders.
So code in my step 3 will need 40-50 Replace statements.
If I have JSON like this and pass it to the engine I am using to create a PDF file, the word "null" appears on the PDF. This isn't really my example, but I googled "json replace null empty string" and this was a hit, which is a good representation of my data, also:

We use a rendering engine that creates a PDF from a fixed template and variable data in the form of a json string. But our customers don't want to read that the id is "null", they want to read that the id is blank. In my C# program, the json is just a string, so I can easily do something like this:
jsonString = jsonString.Replace("null,", ",");but the issue is I can't replace null-comma with a comma, because then it's invalid json.

I am working on creating a stored procedure that will output a pivot table. In the pivot table will be either the string NULL or a number. How can I reformat this in ASP.NET so the NULL value becomes a blank cell in the gridview and the number (whatever it is) becomes an 'X' ?

I would like to store some business flags (like: isFavorite, isOnLive etc.) per an html table row that won't be visible to user.
In practice, I have a simple ADO.Net DataTable on my code-behind which is used as a data-source for a asp.Net GridView control.
This table contains some business flags on its 0th, 1st, 2nd columns.
I need to store those columns on the rendered HTML of the grid-view -so that I can reach them via JavaScript- but I do not want them to be visible.
Prior to using a ViewModel, I could easily pass the "soon to be edited" object directly to the view without needing to fuss over setting individual properties etc as the View conveniently accepted the Employee type directly..

But now I'm using a ViewModel with DataAnnotations attributes applied over the top of various properties for validation purposes. Which creates a problem.. After fetching the "soon to be edited" object from the db, setting the ViewModel's values is suddenly a whole lot more complicated. I can't simply pass the retrieved object straight to the view, as the View now expects the VMEmployee type instead. I would like to be able to do something like:

All paths seem to lead to a huge constructor which manually sets the values of each individual property. But I never had to do that before when I wasn't using a ViewModel. Model binding was a blessing! My objects also have complex child objects, which my form is also collecting values for, so this would be a huge/verbose task against DRY principals. I don't even really want to use a ViewModel, but am forced to because I need two different DataAnnotations rule sets for different validation scenarios applied to the same object.
All I want to do is be able to have two different DataAnnotations rule sets for different scenarios. I.e. public-facing www site vs internal-facing admin site. DataAnnotations doesn't seem to be flexible enough to easily cater for this common need. I've tried AutoMapper, but it throws an error saying it can't map my object types, I suspect because Employee was auto-generated by LINQ to SQL. What is the most elegant way to achieve this while sticking to DRY principals?
I have a repeater that I have bound to a sql reader via my code behind page.
However I can't figure out how to populate the controls in my repeater in my code behind code.
At the moment I am having to specify the database field e.g productprice with the control in the .aspx page like this

I would rather specify fields in my code behind than embedding them in the .aspx page.
I also have a subtotal label control in my repeater that I would like to populate its text property by mutiplying two of the database values e.g productprice * unitprice shown in my repeater.
I need to do this in code behind, looping through the repeater. Any idea of how I can do this in C#?

I wanted to know if we can pass values from Parent page (in this case from Default.aspx page) to the user control and maintain those values on subsequent "Add/Load" of user control.
So in short, if I click the "Add" button it loads my "webusercontrol" and also I am able to pass my default.aspx dropdownlist value to this dynamically loaded user control and assign it to a "Label or Textbox" which resides in my "webusercontrol", now the problem is that the value doesn't persists! What I meant is , when I click "Add" button again the "webusercontrol" gets loaded again perfectly but now all my "Label's" in webusercontrol has the new selected value from the default.aspx dropdownlist.
So say for instance I have a Dropdownlist in Default.aspx page with Values "Apple, BlackBerry, Nokia" and initial value to be passed is "Apple", I click the "Add" button, now my "Label" inside webusercontrol has the value "Apple", perfect! Next when I click "Add" button again and select a different value to be passed this time say "BlackBerry" now I have 2 webusercontrol loaded on the page, so that means I have 2 "Labels" with different ID's, but now my first Label initially had the value "Apple" because that's what I had passed and now when I passed the value "Blackberry" both the labels of my webusercontrol has the value "BlackBerry" instead of one being "Apple" and another "BlackBerry"

I am using VS 2005.I have 5 tables depending on their values ,I need to draw a bar chart.
View 1 RepliesUpdates to the edited item are not passing the new / updated values but rather the original values. And I can't for the life of me figure out why when I change the original value in an edit textbox and post the update the new value is not being passed. I get the original value. Perhaps fresh eyes can spot the problem. This should be super basic but apparently I'm missing something.
