C# - Setting Initial Value For DataType.DateTime In Model?
Jan 25, 2011
I'm passing a model to a view, and the model contains this attribute:
[Required(ErrorMessage = "Please enter a start date")]
[DataType(DataType.DateTime)]
[DisplayName("Start Date")]
public DateTime StartDate { get; set; }
And I have this in my view:
<%: Html.TextBoxFor(m => m.StartDate) %>
When I load the page, the textbox is populated with a date: 1/1/0001 12:00:00 AM
Is there a way to not have this happen, maybe by using metadata?

I have a problem:
I've created usual Controller and View(Edit view) for editing my Entity (EntityFramework)
Here is view example:
<div class="editor-field">
@Html.EditorFor(model => model.BirthDate)
@Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.BirthDate)
</div>
BirthDate is Nullable<DateTime>
but during loading my View I get this exception
The model item passed into the dictionary is null, but this dictionary requires a non-null model item of type 'System.DateTime'.
That's because of BirthDate is null in database but it is nullable and I expect that it just leaves the filed empty.
And I have Shared EditorTemplate:
@model System.Nullable<System.DateTime>
@if (Model.HasValue)

Passing a null or nothing value to a datatime datatype database field (Access)
I've been all over the internet looking at this and I have tried dozens of methods without success.
I've read a few forums where, some say you can not assign a null value or a nothing value to a datetime datatype field. Then I see others where they say...'I got it to work'.
If this is true (that you can not pass a null value), how come I can create a record in the Access table and not assign a value to this date field? (The field is defined as not required).
Yet, once a value is in the field, I can not update that field back to a null or a nothing value.
So I'm hoping someone has the definitive answer to this.
I am using VB.Net Vs 2003 and updating an Access data base.
I have an update statement (see below) that uses parameters for updating.
what will work, so that I can put back the null or nothing value?
Or if it really can not be done, I guess I'll have to take that as truth.

I'm loading data from my database into a DataTable, and one of the columns is a date field.
[Code]....
I'd like to format that column so that instead of containing a full date, it will be formatted like "MM/DD/YYYY".
I've tried looping through each row in the table and changing the cell for that column, but I get an error saying that the string isn't a valid DateTime object.
I tried changing the column DateType to a string, but I get an error saying I can't change the DateType after the table is filled.
How can I do this? This seems like such a simple thing, but I'm having so much trouble with it.

And I also tried with a normal DateTime instead of a nullable one. If I put in a date which is not possible then it still shows as valid. How can I achieve validation, both server side as with unobtrusive client validation?

I have a user control (ASCX) in Views/Shared/EditorTemplates folder that displays a calendar along side of each datatime field in a form.
Now I need to add two image buttons so that the onclick event will set the value in datatime field next to it. First button
will set the datetime to Now, the second will set the datatime to 12:00:00AM of the current date. I am struggling with the
ID property of the datatime fields that prevents me from setting there value property.

I have an SQL table with a smalldatetime column. The Default Value is set to (getdate()), as I want it to insert the date in which the record is inserted. Null values are not allowed.In my corresponding Table Adapter in Visual Studio 2010, when I select that column and view Properties, under DefaultValue it has <DBNull>. If I try to change this to GetDate(), it won't let me.What's the proper way to do this?I am getting the Failed to enable constraints. One or more rows contain values violating non-null, unique, or foreign-key constraints.error when I try to execute a Table Adapter query that simply tries to return all the rows.

I'm using MVC 2 with some Models from a LinqToSql project that I built. I see that when I post back to a Controller Action after editing a form that has a DateTime field from the Model, the MVC Html.ValidationMessageFor() helper will nicely display an error beside the Date text box. This seems to happen automatically when the you test ModelState.IsValid() in the Controller Action, as if the MVC model binding automatically knows that the DateTime field cannot be empty.
My question is... I have some other string fields in these LinqToSql generated classes that are Not-Nullable (marked as Not Nullable in Sql Server which passes thourgh to the LinqToSql generated classes), so why doesn't Mr. MVC pick up on those as well and display a "Required" message in the ValidationMessageFor() placeholders I have added for those fields?
Sure, I have successfully added the MetadataType(typeof<t>) buddy classes to cover these Non-nullable string fields, but it sure does seem redundant to add all this metadata in buddy classes when the LinqToSql generated classes already contain enough info that MVC could sniff out. It MVC validation works with DateTime automatically, why not these Not-nullable fields too?

I use AjaxCalendarExtendar in web form. my code is below: clsDest.ADate = DateTime.Parse(txtADate.Text).Date;
Here 'ADate' field is also a DateTime type. In 'A' laptop, DateTime saving is correct format. In this laptop, Regional and Language Current format is English (United States) - M/d/yyyy. When I save this ADate at another laptop 'B'. DateTime format is wrongly saved. Firstly, this laptop's regional setting is English(Singapore). So I change it to English(United States) but still wrongly saved. Here, the other datetime field, UDate is saved by DateTime.Now. This field's Datetime format is not changed.
Before saving with M/d/yyyy
ADate - 01/08/2010
UDate - 01/25/2010
After saving
ADate - 08/01/2010
UDate - 01/25/2010

I created a UserControl and added a public DateTime property. I want to set this property in Markup (ie. <cc1:MyControl runat="server" id="MyControl1" DateTimeProp="1/1/2010" /> ) however I live in a place with a dd/mm/yyyy date format so it complains if I set something like "20/1/2010". Is there a way to set markup in my local datetime format or do I have to conform to "mm/dd/yyyy"?

I'm building an MVC 2 RTM app, and I want to be able to share my model across applications. I'd *like* to be able to implement it like:ASP.NET MVC2 app (holds Views and Controllers)Class library to hold Model(s)WCF app to handle the data transactions with the models via different data stores across apps I had the MVC app working fine, but I wanted to abstract the data stuff and be able to work with the model across apps through the WCF site, so I created a class library project and moved all of the Models classes into that and set-up a WCF app, then added project references to the MVC and WCF apps that point at the class library. The idea was I can create services that take and return objects from the model via method calls across apps. It appears that everything's wired up correctly in the MVC project, so I'm passing the objects stored in the Models class library between controllers and views and everythig is compiling just fine, but for some reason the data is not being passed back from the views to the controller on POST -- all of the properties in the classes are null or empty.
When I debug the app, I can see that the values are stored in the model data dictionary but not the model object itself. What am I doing wrong? Am I on the wrong path, or missing something obvious (to some)?

I made a few changes to the DB in SQL server management studio then right clicked on the .edmx doc to get it to update. That seemed to work fine but when i compiled the app everything that referenced the EF seems to be broken.The Error list now contains the below error for all classes that used it.
The type or namespace name '' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)
