C# - StreamWriter Stops Writing When File Is Opened From Web Link?
Mar 22, 2010
Following on from my previous question...
The following code creates log files on a web server:
private void LogMessage(Message msg)
{
using (StreamWriter sw = File.AppendText(_logDirectory + DateTime.Now.ToString("yyyyMMddHH") + ".txt"))
{
sw.WriteLine(msg.ToString());
}
}
The log files are linked to from an admin page on the web site:
foreach (FileInfo file in logDir.GetFiles())
{
Response.Write("<a href='http:// .... /Logs/" + file.Name + "'>" + file.Name + "</a>");
}
I'm getting the problem that after someone looks at one of the log files from the link, that log file stops being written to.

Currently I have the text file going to desktop, in ASP how can I prompt a file save dialog for the user? The result is string from the streamreader as "result" as follows:
StreamWriter FileWriter = new StreamWriter(Path.Combine(Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.Desktop), "file.txt"));
FileWriter.Write(result);
FileWriter.Close();

I'm using a streamwriter to write a tab delimited file (for import into Mail Chimp), but the last line of the file is always missing a few characters. Doesn't matter what size the List<t> is (its small - about 128 lines)
Code:
protected void WriteTempFile(List<ChimpExportModel> list, out string filepath)
{
Guid UniFileName = Guid.NewGuid();
string path = Server.MapPath("Temp");
string writepath = string.Concat(path, @"" + UniFileName.ToString() + @".txt");
[Code] ....
I've looked at the last item of the List in the debugger and it's just like all the rest. On write, its always cutting off the last characters - which happen to be '.com'. Kinda important. Some posts say to flush and close - tried it. No change. Last characters still AWOL.

i have been trying to solve this for hours with no luck. i seem to be missing something fundamental.
i have a remote FTP server with a file called log.txt on it, i wish to allow web users to download this file to their local drive to a designated folder.
i have a function calling this sub i found on the web with the filename to download.when trying to run this code i get this error:
" Could not find a part of the path 'C: empFtpDownloadsFolderlog.txt'. "
[Code]....
if i replace this line:
[Code]....
i get no error but the file is not in the TempPath. (it shows it to be saved to "C:WindowsTEMPlog.txt" )
i have a feeling its being save on the server instead of my local drive.

I have used the AnimationExtender to display a panel when I hover over a hyperlink. I want it to automatically close the panel when I move off of the hyperlink.
In the code below I thought I could add an OnHoverOut to the Animations, but only one animation is allowed.
<u><asp:HyperLink ID="href" runat="server">thrust</asp:HyperLink></u>
<asp:Button ID="btn1" Text="Thrust" OnClientClick="return false;" runat="server" />
<asp:Panel ID="panel1" runat="server" CssClass="panel1">
<p>The old In & Out</p>
</asp:Panel>
<ajax:AnimationExtender ID="AnimationExtender2" TargetControlID="href" runat="server">
<Animations>
<OnHoverOver>
<Sequence AnimationTarget="panel1">
<EnableAction AnimationTarget="href" Enabled="false" />
<StyleAction Attribute="display" Value="block" />
<Parallel>
<FadeIn Duration="1" Fps="20" />
<Scale Duration="1" Fps="20" ScaleFactor="30.0" Center="true" />
</Parallel>
</Sequence>
</OnHoverOver>
</Animations>
</ajax:AnimationExtender>

I am downloading file from database using the following code. This code downloads an excel file from the database which has a macro attached to it when it is opened. This macro reads file name of the excel file and uses it for its computation. Everthing works file if user saves the file on his harddisk and then open if but if he directly opens the file from the dialog(by hitting 'Open' button) then file name of the opened excel file comes out be the name of the webform that has the above code and this leads to error in the macro. Is there any option through which i can control the name of the file if user directly opens the file from dialog or the option to disable or remove 'Open' button form the dialog?

Spent ages trying to get this right but am struggling now. I have a list box and textbox, I can happily enter Email addresses into the textbox which are saved into a text file and populated in a list box. I want to be able to select a list item and delete it, along with it's record in my text file. I was going to do it by on the delete list item / button click, it delete's the text file and then writes and a new one with the remaining list items in the list box. Unfortunately it's re-writing the file but either not including the remaining list items. Here's some examples of what I've changed and what populates the text file:
StreamWriter1.WriteLine(Addresses.Items); - System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListItemCollection
StreamWriter1.WriteLine(Addresses.Text); - A blank line?!?
The code is below. The reason I wouldn't allow the user to delete the first list item is because I thought the code was working ok but for some reason putting in a blank line to start with, and if I deleted the line it'd delete all file content. No, I don't know why I thought that either.

I am maintaining a web application that allows word template documents do be opened inside the browser.
Recently the client upgraded to windows 7 and MS Word 2007 and my problems started... When a template document is opened inside the browser and saved, the original file is overwrited instead of a new word file being created.
Is there a way to force ms word inside the browser to behave the same as when it runs outside the browser?

We have a very simple ASP.Net page for uploading a file to our webserver. The page has no controls - a client uses it to automatically send us a file each night.
On occasion, the file seems to not get to us, but the client reports that they have sent it.
We added some logging statements to the page, and discovered something quite odd. The page ceases to execute right in the middle of a log statement. No exceptions, just up and dies.
Here is the code-behind:
[code]....
I assume if there was a error in the transmission of the file that either an exception would be thrown from the reader.ReadToEnd() line. And if not an exception, I would expect the page processing to continue but that I may only receive part of the file (in which case it should log something).
The logging statement is only accessing a string variable, and it's inside a try-catch. NLog is the logging component we use, and we access that through the facade provided by the Simple Logging Facade project on Codeplex. So, we trust the logging component to be more or less bulletproof - we certainly don't see anything in our usage of it here that should be causing problems.
Why on earth could this page just up and stop processing like this?
The fact that we get a half-finished logging statement seems to point towards an error being swallowed in the logging system - but that just seems so unlikely - and we have NLog's internal logging on and it is not reporting any problems.

I am trying to write some lines at runtime to a text file using streamwriter, but i have to allow only 100 lines to be written to that file, if 101 line is supposed to be written to that file than first line of the file must get discarded/deleted and file must allow writing the 101 line so the file will actually always contain only 100 lines.

I am writing to a CSV that will contain different customer information. Right now when I write to it, it overwrites whatever is in the path right now. Instead of overwriting I would like the new writer.WriteLine to append to the current CSV without overwriting it.

Also, can anyone help me with writing the file to a different location other than my local project file? I need the path to become a server location instead of the CSV folder stored locally.

I have a page posting data to me via HTTP POST. What i want is write posted data into mp4 video format file. Here my code how to write that file:
string strFilePath = "D:\Video.mp4";
using (FileStream fs = new FileStream(strFilePath, FileMode.Create))
{
byte[] bytes = new byte[Request.InputStream.Length];
Request.InputStream.Read(bytes, 0, (int)Request.InputStream.Length);
fs.Write(bytes, 0, bytes.Length);
}
My problem is that i got the file, but it's corrupt when playback. Is there any problem with my stream or i missing some decode for mp4 file?

Based on this piece of code, I want to do exactly like this demonstration. However, correct me if I'm wrong but if two or more users somehow simultaneously access the web page at the same precise nanosecond in time, then wouldn't we have a race condition? So is this piece of code valid? How would I correct this to make it thread safe?

i have table data which i am currently writing to an excel file, but i need to be able to securely password protect the file. Ive been told excel passwords are easy to break, so is there another file type which i can dynamically write to and password protect for emailing elsewhere (and requiring receiver to type password in to access it)?
