I'm using ASP.NET Session State to keep track of logged in users on my site. However, one problem I'm running into is that by default ASP.NET session cookies are set to expire when the browser closes. I've tried setting my own ASP.NET_SessionId cookie and modifying the cookie's expiry using something similar to the following code:
Response.Cookies["ASP.NET_SessionId"].Expires = DateTime.Now.AddMonths(1);
None of these approaches work, they all set a second cookie with the same name. Is there a way of changing the session cookie's expiry?

I want to be able to log when a user ends their session on our application and record whether it was a sign out or a the session expired. I am using
cookies.Add(new HttpCookie("ASP.NET_SessionId", ""));
to set a new sessionId on sign out, but when the session expires, the sessionId is reused if the browser instance is not closed. In my web.config I have used
<sessionState mode="InProc" timeout="1" cookieName="session" regenerateExpiredSessionId="true" />
but still get sessions reused. I can't kill the cookie in Session_end() because I don't have access because there is no HttpContext or request, so I can't reset it that way. how I can force a new sessionId from the Global.asax.cs file?

I use FileUpload to select a file and then I click an Upload Button to read the browsed filename. When I select a file that is larger than the max set in web config, my app crashes. The click Upload Button and the FileUpload control are in an ItemTemplate in a Gridview. If I select a file that is less than the max allowed, everything works fine.
How/where do trap this kind of error? I have tried breakpoints in my code behind, but it seems like the page crashes before any of the events I have tried to trap. I have tried a customvalidator to no avail.

I have a piece of code which loads either french or english text and 2 link buttons that allow to switch between.
[code]....
What would be an efficient way of displaying the link buttons and text if both English and French exist and the session exists in either EN or FR.
I've thought of using panels to hide the buttons or text, but the main problem is having the page refresh to set the Session variable. Response.redirect(URL) to refresh the page i suppose and i can't find a better way to display the text other than to Response.write it since then i'd need a ton of labels.

How do I implement this session: (UserID is part of the login table)
Session["UserID"]="usrName";
Into this code?
using System;
using System.Data;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Web;
using System.Web.UI;
using System.Web.UI.WebControls;
using System.Data.Odbc;
using System.Data.SqlClient;
public partial class Default2 : System.Web.UI.Page
{
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
Login1.Authenticate += Login1_Authenticate;
}
protected void Login1_Authenticate(object sender, AuthenticateEventArgs e)
{
//database connection string
OdbcConnection cn = new OdbcConnection("Driver={MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver}; Server=localhost; Database=gymwebsite; User=x; Password=x; OPTION=3;");
cn.Open();
OdbcCommand cmd = new OdbcCommand("Select * from User where username=? and password=?", cn);
//Select the username and password from mysql database in login table
cmd.Parameters.Add("@username", OdbcType.VarChar);
cmd.Parameters["@username"].Value = this.Login1.UserName;
cmd.Parameters.Add("@password", OdbcType.VarChar);
cmd.Parameters["@password"].Value = this.Login1.Password;
//use asp login control to check username and password
cmd.Parameters.Add(new OdbcCommand("@UserID", 'id.int'));
OdbcDataReader dr = default(OdbcDataReader);
// Initialise a reader to read the rows from the login table.
// If row exists, the login is successful
dr = cmd.ExecuteReader();
int id = cmd.Parameters["@UserID"].Value;
Session["UserID"]="usrName";
if (dr.Read())
{
e.Authenticated = true;
Response.Redirect("UserProfileWall.aspx");
// Event Authenticate is true forward to user profile
}
}
}
I need to be able to retrieve the correct UserID when some one inputs there username and password upon login and then some how retrieve it on a new page something like this to retireve it but unsure?

I just dont know how to add the first part, the session into my login code so I can some how store the UserID in my session but also retrieve the correct UserID from the submitted data that takes from my mysql login table.

I always used ASP FileUpload with great success, but recently tried to modify its appearance in order to blend in with the general appearance of the project. After extensive research I discovered that in this particular case it would not be possible and opted for an alternative.While not wanting to lose the functionality of the ASP FileUpload I hid the ASP FileUpload and rather just added a read-only textbox and button which I styled with ease. Subsequently I invoked the ASP FileUploads file browse window using Javascript. Consider the following:
Code:
<script type="text/javascript">
function ShowBrowseDialog()
{
[code]...
The above works fine for invoking the ASP FileUpload and selecting the file, but I need to work with the selected file(s) in the code-behind. Is there a way that I can trap a click event on the ASP FileUpload OPEN button, i.e. once the user selected the file(s)?

I'm working on an ASP.NET MVC web application that will be deployed across multiple load-balanced servers. With this setup, a user might have one request served by server A and the next request will be served by ServerB or ServerC. We don't want to store Session Data in the database, as we're trying to minimise database hits where ever possible. As such, we need to have the HttpSession managed and stored on another server. My understanding is that this is possible by using a Windows Service that will manage this for me, but I'm unfamiliar with how to implement this. Can somebody point me at some good documentation on how to do this? Or any pitfalls or other points to take into consideration?

I am creating an ASP.NET application that allows users to edit and insert data that is persisted in a SQL Server database.I would like to implement a controller class that handles queries for certain entities, caches results and triggers events when data is inserted or updated.I need one of these controller classes for each entity in my data model.What I'm unsure of is how to create a singleton class of this sort that different user sessions can access.
For example,I have a Employee entity in my data model.I would like to have an EmployeeController class that handles retrieving the employees from the database, sends inserts and updates to the database,keeps a cache of all employees and triggers events when an employee is inserted or updated.Objects in other user sessions could then listen and respond to these events.
Am I on the right track?Should I be using the ASP.NET MVC framework to accomplish this?How do I instantiate these controller classes when the first user needs them and have subsequent concurrent users access the same class?
EDIT:I've been researching the idea of a controller class as an anti-pattern since @TomTom's answer.I'm not convinced one way or the other.I still need an answer to question #3 above.Let's just drop the specific idea of a controller class for now. How do I create any class that is:accessible by multiple user sessions,allows only one instance,is deleted if there are no user sessions,and triggers events that other classes can listen to.

Using ASP.NET 2.0, with forms authentication.
Just for a test, I configured the roles cookie in web.config like this :
<roleManager enabled="true" cacheRolesInCookie="true" cookieName=".ASPXROLES" cookieTimeout="2"></roleManager>
I wanted to see what would happen when the cached role cookie expired. Using Fiddler, after 2 minutes had elapsed, I could see that the raw value of the role cookie had changed.
I was expecting that on expiry, that ASP.NET would simply re-read the roles information from the database, and repopulate the cookie with the same value. So my question is, why would the raw value of the cookie change after expiry ? The cookie value is not human-readable (base 64 encoded and/or encrypted ?), so I can't tell if the information in it is the same, although the application still seems to work fine.
EDIT :
It looks like each time the roles are encrypted and cached in the cookie, it gets a different raw value.
e.g. if you run the following code :
RolePrincipal rp = (RolePrincipal) User;
string str = rp.ToEncryptedTicket();
Label1.Text = str;

I have the a test harness detailed below. This has two labels on the page that are set within the page_load which is hit every second due to the updatepanel and timer.
Label1 is set to a datetime value that is stored in the Cache. Label2 is set to the current datetime.
The cache is set with an absolute expiry of 5 seconds from now and there is an update callback on the cache to re-set the datetime and make it valid for another 5 seconds.
The problem I have is that I'm seeing the cache update every 20 seconds, not every 5 seconds like I would expect. If I set the time to 30 seconds then it updates every 40.
This appears to indicate that the cache will only expire every 20 seconds. Does anyone know of a way of reducing this time? If I just insert into the cache with an expiry of 5 seconds and no Callback then it works as I would expect and is removed every 5 seconds.
