Caching - How To Turn Pages Into Static Pages As Part Of The Build

Dec 29, 2010

I have a few pages that are completely static. They only change at build time. But they are expensive to create. For the ones that are kind of expensive to create, I cache them for very long times using the ASP.NET output caching. But for one page, I really want it cached forever and ever or until the the next build.

What is the most expedient way to make this happen? Is there a build in feature that achieves this or a 3rd party tool?

(yeah, for the moment I plan to do the "view source" and copy paste thing, which isn't a very elegant build step)

Html - Generate Static Web Pages From A Template As Part Of Web Application Build?

Oct 13, 2010

I'm building an HTML5 application (with ASP.NET back-end) and i want to develop it in such a way that i can run it locally with all my resources (such js and css) not minified (so i can debug it easily). However when i build the final version i want merge and minify the resources. At the same time i want to create several versions of the app targeting different platforms (iPhone, iPad, desktop, etc) by adding appropriate css.

I thought that the final output should be a set of html files (so the get cached nicely). I could use ASPX and just control the output by a query string parameter, but i don't really want to have the form tag on my page.

So the questions are:

What are the pros and cons of using static html pages generated from a template versus a dynamic ASPX page? (apart from being able to run on any web server)
If ASPX approach good enough then how can i get rid of the form tag that's required by ASP.NET?

UDPATE

Another factor in favor of static html pages is the fact that the files are served instantly, whereas ASPX may take awhile to load if the app has recycled.

The back-end is ASP.NET 2.0.

Web Forms :: Preventing Caching Of Web Pages?

Jan 28, 2011

I am relatively new to ASP.NET and have searched the Internet to find guidance in preventing caching of web pages (in the latest versions of IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari). Based on my search, I found a lot of conflicting/confusing info. As best as I can tell, it appears that I need to add the following 3 lines to the <head> section of my .aspx files:

[Code]....

if the aforementioned lines are correct and if all 3 lines are necessary? I have tried using different combinations of the 3 lines, but I get conflicting results (i.e., sometimes the page is cached and sometimes it's not).

C# - Client Caching On Authenticated Pages?

Dec 9, 2010

Our web app currently under development has authentication on all the pages.

We can deny a user access to any particular page but have found that if a user had previously opened the page that they can still access the page via the url. [Even if they log out and log in]

Assuming that the page is coming from client cache [Ctrl F5 in IE kicks in the proper authentication behavior or clearing the client cache]

A lot depends on how we have implemented the authentication but a quick fix on our side would be from within the admin section where we deny access to certain pages that we expire client cache for that page.

Is there a way to do this programmatically.

This would mean that client caching would continue to work as normal for all other users that still had access to the page in question.

Web Forms :: Re: Master Pages And XMLDataSource Caching ?

Mar 31, 2010

I have a master page that hosts a user control to load my menus from the database depending on the user logged in.So when ever a user logs in, the menu list corresponding to him is loaded into the XMLDatasource that is the Data source for the menus.Following is the code:

[Code]....

The problem is if I log out as one user and Login as another, the XML Data source is not invalidating the cache... and is loading the same values again ..Further I even noticed that the program flow control is not transfered to the LoadMenus.ascx control at times and the page is loaded with out having to go through the control flow of all the controls on the master page. i am not sure how to force the control to pass through a single control.I have set the EnableCaching to false on the xml data source.

MVC :: Build A Request Over Several Pages?

Mar 18, 2010

In Web Forms I would tend to do this by having one actual page. I would then use a tab container to give the appearance of several pages of a "wizard" by enabling and disabling tabs. Of course the URL wouldn't change, but otherwise it gave the impression I wanted. The values of the hidden controls were maintained in viewstate, and when the submit button on the last page was pressed I could obtain all the information I needed from the state of the controls.This obviously is not how it should be done with MVC. However, I don't really want session state or to write partially complete submissions to the database. What is the best way of handling this?

Asp.net - HttpModule Appears To Fire For Static Pages Only?

Jan 26, 2011

I have an HttpModule for handling errors up and running in the visual studio development environment. It works well. To the client, there are hard 404s and no apparent redirects. Google Analytics should be very happy with this.Debugging in Visual Studio 2008, when one navigates to localhost [port]/this page doesnt exist.html, I get a our 404 error page and the hard 404. It also works on the development server for localhost:[port]/this_page_doesnt_exist.aspx.When I port it all over to our IIS7 web server, I've got it working exactly as it should for the static html files. However, I've determined that my module isn't getting called at all for aspx files. If I turn customErrors Off, I get the standard ugly 404 page. (If customErrors is RemoteOnly, these do kick in.)The clues seem to be pointing at some IIS setting that I don't have properly tweaked, but I can't for the life of me find it. Any ideas?

Encapsulate The Master Page / Tried To Build The Pages Into A Standard .dll To No Avail?

Feb 2, 2011

we've started writing a standard toolkit for our asp.net applications including one standard master page, stylesheet, errorpage, noaccesspage etc. that will be used by all our applications. Is there a way we can add these pages to each individual application from one central location - so if any of these standard pages change, we only have to change them once and not numerous times in our individual projects?? I tried to build these pages into a standard .dll to no avail.

Configuration :: Finding Best Practice For Making Sure That Slow Pages Don't Affect Other Pages?

Aug 31, 2010

Page B - loads slowly and needs to do some CPU-intensive operations on the web server.

I noticed that when someone is loading Page B, then Page A also loads slowly. This is even worse if multiple users are loading Page B at the same time. Page A won't finish loading until Page B is done.

Is there a best practice for making sure that Page A can still load quickly? Maybe a config setting or IIS setting that I need to change from its default? With 2 users loading Page B at the same time, the web server CPU usage only gets to 30% so I suspect it might be something I can tweak with the settings.

State Management :: Maintain Query String Parameter In All Pages - It Gets Lost In Subsequent Pages

Aug 9, 2010

In my Application_BeginRequest I have code that gets query string value ?c=FR or ?c=US and store it in cookies.Based on query string value I have either US or FR,locale is selected from locale table.If ?c=FR then locale will be fr-FR and if it is US then locale will be en-US.My code is below.

void Application_BeginRequest(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
LocalizationInfo loc = GetLocalizationInfo();
if (Request.Cookies["Localization"] == null)
Response.Cookies.Add(new HttpCookie("Localization"));
Response.Cookies["Localization"]["Country"] = loc.Country;
CultureInfo objCI = new CultureInfo(loc.Locale);
Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture = objCI;
Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture = objCI;
}
public static LocalizationInfo GetLocalizationInfo()
{
string countryCode = "";
string sLocale = "";
if (HttpContext.Current.Response.Cookies["Localization"]["Country"] != null)
countryCode = HttpContext.Current.Response.Cookies["Localization"]["Country"];
if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(HttpContext.Current.Request.QueryString["c"]))
countryCode = HttpContext.Current.Request.QueryString["c"];
if (countryCode == "")
countryCode = "US";
sLocale = HertzRent2Buy.DataProvider.ListData.GetLocale(countryCode);
LocalizationInfo ret = new LocalizationInfo();
ret.Country = countryCode;
ret.Locale = sLocale;
return ret;
}
public struct LocalizationInfo
{
public string Country;
public string Locale;
}

Now when I run the project and in query string I set [URL] then for the very first page(home page itself) it shows me French translation,but on subsequent page,that query string parameter ?c=FR is lost and hence it shows be English translation not French translation since it does not pickup French resx file.If I manually append ?c=FR in subsequent page then it shows the French translation.Is there is way how I can make that query stringparameter available in all pages.Structure is there to hold Country and locale variables. In all pages I am calling GetLocalizationInfo() method as follow

LocalizationInfo info = some.DataProvider.Globalization.GetLocalizationInfo();

And I create instance info to pass locale and country as parameter. GetProductDetails(id,info.Country,info.locale). why my query string parameters get lost on subsequent pages.
