Coming from PHP it's common to have a simple class that makes talking to a database very easy. Do people use the same approach in .net, or do you have a class for say products, which handles all database communications for the products table?

I am developing a website that display products and the users will be able to rate these products. At the end of the month a winner product will be highlighted on the website home page. What I need to know is how to determine the winner product if I have the following rating scenario, The user will rate for the product by choosing a value from 1 to 5 where 1 mean bad and 5 excellent.
If 10 users voted for the product A and the average rating was 4 and 1 user voted for product B and the average rating were 5 that mean product B will be the winner. I feel this is not the correct method to determine the winner. one has better method that take in consideration the number of voted users to determine the winner?

I have a gridview which shows products from product table. I have 1000s of products in db and gridview shows 15 records per page. I want to fetch only 15 records from database at one time but page number should show as all products are in list and with page change next products should be displayed. grid has sorting enabled. on top of page there is a text box for records filtering so I need to keep sorting in mind as well.
View 1 RepliesI am creating a ASP.Net application in MVC architecture. I have to connect to a database on MS Access and be able to enter data into it. All examples I see use SQL Server. When I try from prject explorer Add New Item -> Data -> I am unable to find Drivers for Access Database.
From the Data Connections in Server Explrere window I was able to make a successful connection to the database.
Does MVC 2 support MS Access Database?
I have a table which contains products with many different attributes (columns). Depending on which product the user looks at I want to present it differently as one product might have only a few attributes and others have a lot. I have been thinking a long the line of having a set of templates and associate each product with a template but can't figure out how implement that in a smart way. Some options I have been thinking of 1) One datasource and several formviews - doesn't work if I'm not misstaken 2) Several form views and datasoruces - this would however need programming to enable to right set. 3) Using the wizard control to separate different form views and data sources.

how to implement filters on products as this is the first time i am doing this. This is very common in ecommerce websites which sell computer products (example bestbuy.com) where a client for example would click on Monitors category, upon clicking on monitors client is presented with all the monitors available. He then could filter the monitors using filters for example he clicks on a 19 Inch monitor filter and the monitors update to only display 19 Inch monitors.
how to make this as regards tables in database?
I'm working on an ecommerce project that is missing 5,000 product pictures.
I am trying to assign all products without pictures into a category located on a mapping table.
I know an insert can be accomplished from one table (or subquery) to another but I only need to find the product IDs and insert them with default values into the category mapping table that has all non-null columns.
The following code is the farthest I can get without help (I'm not strong in SQL), it won't work because my subquery returns many rows while the SQL statement is designed to insert one - I don't know how to handle this...

is there any way to import/export products by excel file in database along with category mappying and pictures in one go rather that importing just the products and then categorizing each product and adding image one by one ?
I have to different dll, one dll(data.dll) hold the data in the list and another dll(order.dll) is to get information from outside world. Now when ever the information come out side world the order.dll put it in the data.dll. After that i want it to push it to the client side how is it possible? Is it possible to store the data in the data.dll which is get from the order.dll, so that i can retrive back when it required using webservice?.

I have one page with two dropdownlists with different IDs and in my codebehind I have two distinct methods, one for each dropdownlist, with distinct names and handlers.
BUT, in my codebehind, only one dropdownlist calls it's method - and sometimes it calls both methods! - while the other dropdownlist never calls its method.

Just knocked up a quick sub site and everything was working great until I put my code in the getquote button and now it shows the below error. Done a bit of searching but everything I find says I need to insert something like: Protected WithEvents {buttonname} As LinkButton

Is there a technical/performance limit on the number of roles an application handles? I'm in the process of designing an application which I forsee having a lot of roles created, to be able to handle the degree of granularity the system should have (e.g., permissions per project, where there could be a lot of projects).
Would you recommend another approach other than using roles for this kind of granularity?
I have incorporated the asp.net membership and roles feature in my web app on my local dev setup that uses SQL 2008 Developer edition, all works as it should.
My remote system uses SQL 2005 express and I went through the process of creating the ASPNET membership tables via the "aspnet_regsql" command to my remote target database. I then created a few users, adjusted my app connection strings accordingly and uploaded.
My login page uses the "login" server control and when I try and login using credentials from one of the previously created users I get a "Your login attempt was not successful. try again." error. I know the users are in the DB as I can see then via the SQL Management studio on the remote DB. I have triple checked the username/passwords and I am definately entering the correct info. The connection strings are correct as the initial page renders content from another table in the DB. I am getting no errors.
My best guess at the moment is that SQL Express handles Membership/Roles connections differently to the full versions of SQL?
I put a server side button on the header page. The website is running fine. I use the same source and put it on IIS, it's also working fine but the problem is, i couldn't compile it anymore using my VS studio. It's showing no error so when I go and check the output (after scrolling down a bit and found one line says error). it says

keyword is the textbox on the header page. I also played around with AutoEventWireUp (true/false) and defining onclick event on the server tag but it is still not solving the problem.
I have 2 tables in my database ie product, order details.In my mvc application i was able to display products from product table.I created products.cs class in my entities,IProductRepository.cs in Abstract folder and SQLProductRepository.cs in Concrete folder..Do i need create a separate class for all the order details too?I was using apress book to develop my mvc application
View 5 RepliesI have a table in my aspnet database. I added a bottom row "Not Selected", if the user doesn't select from a databound drop down list. This row is at the bottom, because I just added it to the table data. Is there any way to move this one row to the top of the table manually? There is not "cut" and "paste" when I select the whole row.
