Implement A Web Site Installer For Application

I need to implement a web site installer for my asp.net application. The installer will be handling following features - Deploy the .net web application on to the IIS server Setting up the Sql database connection to run the DB scripts. Execute all the DB scripts. Run another exe for the license management. If some thing goes wrong, need to rollback everything. I have heard about wix and install shield and wondering what would be the best technology suitable for this particular case.

My company has built a web application using ASP.NET MVC and SQL Server 2008 which also requires some other custom windows components that we built to be installed. What we would like to do is create an installer package that will automate as much as possible to make deployment easier at customer sites. Some of the tasks we are looking to do is: install .net 4, IIS, sql server, setup IIS, deploy web application, configure web.conifg, deploydatabse, and install custom windows services. We are using VS 2010 and the installer has to work on IIS 6 and up. Having never done something like this before, does anyone have any insight and/or where could I look to start finding answers on how to go about this process?

I am getting the error: The installer was interrupted before the application could be installed you need to restart the installer to try againI am having a asp.net 3.5 project created in VS2010...and selected the target as .net framework 3.5....still when i try to run the MSI it gives the above error..

I am trying to learn how to deploy a web application with .msi installer. I followed the tutorial at this site http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2007/06/15/tip-trick-creating-packaged-asp-net-setup-programs-with-vs-2005.aspx and created a .msi file.However, after I installed the application and tried to open the default.aspx file, I got this error:A name was started with an invalid character. Error processing resource 'http://localhost/TestMsi/default.aspx'.

Using Visual Web Developer 2010 Express. I was used to creating a web app anytime and I would get a default page for starters and be happy. But today I find that when I pick either the ASP.NET Web Site or ASP.NET Web Application templates I get site.master and a bunch of site admin files that I don't want. Alternately when I select the empty versions of those templates, I get almost nothing at all. An almost empty web.config page and no Default.aspx page. There is nothing magical about having a default.aspx page in place, but it is an indicator of a change when I can only get a virtually completely empty website or a website with a bunch of bells and whistles I don't want.
Also, for some reason, when I create a new app or website as just noted, in the Solution Explorer I get aspx.designer.cs files showing as well as web.config files for both debug and release. Somehow some settings and templates must have changed, or am I missing something here? How can I get my settings/templates to go back to the way they were?

I'd like to implement a POP3-mailbox processing component for our medium-sized consumer website. Our site uses IPSwitch as the mail/smtp/pop host. This processing component would let us offer "reply to this message board discussion via email" type services. It would need to run constantly; or at the very least, every 3-5 minutes or something.
I'm pretty sure I know what I need to do to implement this POP3 reader in C#, but I'm just not sure of the mechanism that makes it happen every 3-5 minutes, keeps it running when the machine reboots, etc. Task Scheduler seems a little brittle. Should this be written instead as a Windows Service? And if so, can I get some good pointers on how to write an Installable Service in C#? Or, if there's a better plan to run a daemon on an IIS box, I'd much appreciate it.

I'm working on a public site that soon will not longer be 100% public. Paid users will be able to access 100% of the features while "anonymous" users will access a reduced version. The problem is that anonymous users and paid users will access the same pages, but they'll see different things. I wonder about how to keep using cache for all pages. I have to 100% sure that I show the correct content for each type of user. Will be extremely bad to show a cached version of the paid site to an anonymous user (and the other way around). Preferably, without adding anything to the url to differentiate user type.

I'm trying to figure out a logical and quick way to implement the "PRG" design style in a small site I'm doing, and I'm finding an issue I can't think of a good way to solve.I have a form. It has 2 fields (first and last name). When the user submits the form, I check to make sure that they have data in them before I save it to the database. I have an internal corporate ASP.NET MVC website.
Requirement(1): When any person is on the network, they can access this site EXCEPT one AD Group (Example: AD_Sales group).
Requirement(2): Also like for example if a person that has the access passes a url (Ex: http://mysite/Home/Index/Product/Letter) to a sales group person, he still should NOT access and need to display a custom message saying "You are not authorised to view this page".
If the scenario is like to issue the access to one AD Group and deny access for all others, it is fairly is. It can done from IIS. I am Wondering how to do this.

I have implemented master pages using this example How to implement a status bar in an ASP.NET application?. I have a property on my SiteMaster.cs inherited MasterPage called Environment. On my MasterPage.master I have this code:

What I would like to do is evaluate this.Environment and if it is "LIVE" then colour the background of this.Environment text red, and if it's "TEST" colour it yellow. How would I do this?

i am trying to implement ldap features to my web application in asp.net C#......
i implemented the ldap features in such a way that,if the ldap path is given like:
ldap://serverneame/ou="sdfsd",dc=""",dc=""
this will allow all the groups under this server and domain how can i differentiate between the groups for example consider an hospital i want this application to be accesible only by doctors,even the cashiers of the hospital will be able to access my application,how should i not allow certain set of groups to be authenticated to my application.

I've built an ASP.NET MVC application with MVC 2.0 and Fluent NHibernate (hided behind repositories for some reasons). The application represents a quite complex domain with some different objects like users, messages, comments, files and appointments.
Now I want to implement a fulltext search which is enabling the user to find easily all types of content by simply entering a search phrase. When handling all that types of different objects in the application seperately, I now have to put them "together" for the search. That means the user makes no distinction between the different types, he just enters "xyz" and wants to get results in a list, comments mixed up with messages etc.
Option 1 is to create a search service which fetches the search result from the different repositories and prepares the combined output (sorting, paging etc.). But that's really, really expensive when the data behind grows (and it will grow).
So I am looking for an alternative solution. Currently I am working with SQL Server 2008. What I have found is lucene.net [URL], but I didn't invest much time yet.

How can I implement Jquery JSONP in my ASP.NET project. My application flow is described below:
1) I am opening a HTTP page, where I have got JQuery login dialog box, from which username and password is posted to my Login.aspx page, which has got one method "GetLoginDetails" which takes posted username and password and sends to a WEBSERVICE which checks the users name and password and return back with "success=true"
2) so in my response I get "success=true", I read that value from jquery and works according to responded text on my client side it display message "Logged in Successfully".
