Javascript - Defer Loading UpdatePanel Content Until After The Page Renders?
Oct 7, 2010
Old hand at ASP.NET, new to the UpdatePanel. I have a reporting page which executes a fairly length SQL query... takes about 10 seconds right now. What I would like to do is have my page fully render, with some placeholder text (Loading...) and then have the UpdatePanel kick off the actual time-consuming reporting process and render the report when it's done.
So... my theory is to use RegisterStartupScript() to kick this off and drop the string from GetPostBackEventReference() to trigger the UpdatePanel update. Some problems crop up:
1) Can I actually use GetPostBackEventReference w/ the UpdatePanel or do I need to trigger it some other way? Use this method on a button inside the Update Panel?
2) What event gets triggered when the postback reference is the UpdatePanel? It's not clear to me. I've got to call my databinding code somewhere! Again, maybe I need to use a button inside?

need to sanity check what I think is correct. If I have some LINQ entity relationships that I create in code thus:-
[Code]....
these would lazy load, by default - correct? And if the first link was changed to
[Code]....
this would also lazy load and defer loading until GetObjectLink() was called, yes?

I have an UpdatePanel with a repeater in it that is re-bound after a user adds an item to it via a modal popup. When they click the button to add a new row to the repeater the code-behind looks something like this:
protected void lbtnAddOption_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
SelectedOption = new Option()
{
Account = txtAddOptionAccountNumber.Text,
Margin = chkAddOptionMargin.Checked,
Symbol = txtAddOptionSymbol.Text,
Usymbol = txtAddOptionUsymbol.Text,
};
Presenter.OnAddOption(); // Insert the new item
RefreshOptions(); // Pull down and re-bind all the items
mpeAddOptionDialog.Hide(); // Hide the modal
// ... Make call to jQuery scrollTo() method here?
}
This works fine and the new row will show up quickly via the UpdatePanel. However, there are often hundreds of rows and where the new one is added is based on the current sorting column used. So, I wanted to take this as a chance to use the sweet jQuery ScrollTo plugin. I know that if I give it the ID of my overflowed container div and the ID of an element within it, it will smoothly scroll straight to the users newly added row. However, there are two problems:
I need to find the appropriate row so I can snag the ClientID for it. I need to execute the jQuery snippet from my code-behind that will cause my newly updated repeater to scroll to the right row. I've solved #1. I have a reliable method that will produce the newly added row's ClientID. However, problem #2 is proving to be tricky. I know I can just call ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript() form my code-behind and it will execute the JavaScript on my page.
The problem I'm having is that it seems that it is executing that piece of JavaScript before (I'm guessing) the newly refreshed DOM elements have fully loaded. So, even though I am passing in the appropriate jQuery line to scroll to the element I want, it is erroring out for me because it can't find that element yet. Here is the line I'm using at the end of the method I posted above:
string clientID = getClientIdOfNewRow();
ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(this, typeof(Page), "ScrollScript", String.Format("$("#optionContainer").scrollTo("{0}", 800);", clientID), true);
What do I need to do so I can ensure that this line of JavaScript isn't called until the page with the UpdatePanel is truly ready?

I have a site where I am trying to implement a jQuery UI based MessageBox in my master page. Content pages are arranged accoring to business area folders, i.e. '~/Branding/Contracts.aspx'. I find that when I load such a content page, jQuery, which is referenced in the master page as below, does not load. I assume that this is because the browser is requesting 'Branding/Scripts/jQuery What can I do about this? I don't have the 'root' operator in a plain 'script' tag.
<script src="/Scripts/jquery-1.3.2.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script src="Scripts/jquery-1.3.2.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script src="Scripts/jquery-ui-1.7.2.custom.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

I have an web application of 200 web pages and all has a single master page. Most of the content pages use AJAX controls so most of content pages has its own ScriptManager. Now I have a requirement to add a link with HoverMenuExtender control and for that I need to put ScriptManager in the Master page, but it is working only in the content pages where there is not ScriptManager.
All the other content pages which has ScriptManager throws the error Only one instance of a ScriptManager can be added to the page. I don't want to work on most of the content pages again to remove ScriptManager. Is there any easy way to do this something like coding in Master page which decides if there is already ScriptManager already, then don't load it.

I have 2 Imagebuttons on a nested Masterpage. When I click one button I want load a content page and change the image of the clicked button to show that it was selected. Loading the content page goes okay but I can't seem to programmically change the image of the button. I have been reading the posts on the life cycles of MasterPages and Content pages and I think I have the code in the correct page but it is not working. I am so confused now.

I have master page
MyMasterPage.aspx and content page MyDefault.aspx.
MyMasterPage.aspx has one input button [value="Menu-1"]. When user click the button, the button will pass value "Menu-1" into
TextBox1Default1 at content page MyDefault.aspx, and then refresh
UpdatePanelDefault1 at content page MyDefault.aspx asynchronously.
My problem is the post back is full post back when refreshing UpdatePanelDefault1. I would like asynchronously post back during refreshing UpdatePanelDefault1. copy the full code MyMasterPage.aspx and MyDefault.aspx below, and then paste / overwrite it into your blank aspx page for testing. I am using VS 2008
Below is full code MyMasterPage.aspx.[Code]....

I'm having a problem with the load order on my project. I've got a website with a series of content pages which need to access a central set of variables (UserID, etc..). To me, the best way to store this information is in a series of session variables, and the best way to load this information is via the onload method of the Master page. However, my content page onload method is getting called first, throwing a series of null exceptions. From everything I have read, the master page should be loaded first, and then the content page.

I have a small website that uses 1 masterpage and several content pages. I'm able to insert a <ScriptManager> onto my content pages (just a couple of them). However, when I try to insert the <UpdatePanel>, it won't take it. I tried to wrap the <UpdatePanel> around a <Div> and it didn't like that, so then I tried wrapping the <UpdatePanel> around the actual textbox and it didn't like that. Below is some sample code.
Code:
<%@ Page Title="" Language="vb" AutoEventWireup="false" MasterPageFile="~/Site1.Master" CodeBehind="Profile.aspx.vb" Inherits="PF.Profile" %>
<asp:Content ID="Content3" ContentPlaceHolderID="contentProfile" runat="server">
<asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server"></asp:ScriptManager>
<div class="ProfileDIV" style="width: 48%;">
[Code]....
How can I incorporate the <ScriptManager>/<UpdatePanel> onto my content pages?

I got an updatepanel which contains a normal panel on MasterPage. The updatepanel does not contain content place holder. On the content page, I have to add triggers to updatepanel for buttons that are dynamically created on "page_load" event. The problem is that, since the page_load event of content page is being called before master page's page_load event, UpdatePanel is not being created. So that, whenever i try to add triggers in page_load event of content page, i got an error like "A control with ID 'ctl00$editableContent$ctl42' could not be found for the trigger in UpdatePanel 'up1'."
The code below is for adding triggers to updatepanel for buttons.
MasterClass master = (MasterClass)Page.Master;
AsyncPostBackTrigger trig = new AsyncPostBackTrigger(); [code]....

I have the same problem as [URL] However, the solution doesn't work for me since I'm using .Net 4.0 and xhtmlConformance is not there from start.
Basically, using a master page, the RadioButtonList still do the whole page postback even it's in the UpdatePanel. When I put the exact same code in a standalone page without a master page, it works as expected.
Master Page:

Content page:
[Code]....
Standalone page:

I already know this solution. (transfer the slow loading page to a loading-interim-page which shows the animation and then redirects to the actual page)But I would really like to solve this without a redirecting page.

I'm looking for an ASP.NET control that renders a tree structure, very much like the ASP.NET TreeView control, but filling the following requirements:
Dont uses tables for rendering tree structure.
Markup Adhering to valid XHTML 1.0 Strict.
Works with AND without javascript.
Also, if the control is licensed under a MIT och GPL licens that would be great, but commercial controls is also of interest.
Do anyone know of any such control? If not, well, then I'll simply have to write the control myself. More fun in my own opinion, but likely more time consuming.

I have an image control that puts user's photo in it. Once it's loaded, I resize it using the javascript.But the thing is, when the page is loading, the image gets really big, then shrinks down being called by the javascript. Is there a way for me to pre-load the image before displaying it? I do'nt want to set the image control's width and height to fixed pixels at this point.

So imagine a piece of Javascript as the first script on a page along the lines of
var MySuperObject = new (function () {
this.SuperObjectInit();
})();
Now imagine that everything that proceeds this script (or a large portion therein) requires the SuperObject to have met its load conditions and loaded correctly.
Assuming for whatever reason the loading of the object fails I need to abort loading the rest of the page and the scripts in particular.
I know the majority of you are going to scream why not have your function issue a callback onSuccess and onFailed but the problem is this is in a ASP.Net project with masterpages, nestedmasterpages, usercontrols and so forth (each of which have their own dependencies and scripts); rendering such an approach problematic.
The other option (I assume) is to use window.location = "myErrorPage.html"; but I dont like the idea of having to create another page for an error message or the fact that it causes a redirect.
What I am hoping to do is something along the lines of
StopLoadingPage();
document.write("Error has occurred");
