Mvc Views With CLR Generics Syntax In Inherits Attribute?

Oct 18, 2010

For reasons I won't go into I need to use CLR generics syntax in an ASP.NET MVC view.

I.E. NOT this:

System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<someobject>

but this:

System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl`1[[someobject]]

When I run the application I get

Parser Error: could not load type `System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl`1[[someobject]]

Why Can't Use C# Syntax In Inherits Attribute For A Closed Generic But CLR Syntax Is Fine

Jan 15, 2011

The following CLR syntax works fine in my aspx page:

<%@ Page Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.Master" Inherits="Website.MyBasePage`1[HomePageViewModel]" %>

But this C# syntax does not:

<%@ Page Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.Master" Inherits="Website.MyBasePage<HomePageViewModel>" %>

Note, I am not using ASP.NET MVC, but this works fine if using System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<> from ASP.NET MVC.
My MyBasePage looks like this:

public class MyBasePage<TModel> : Page where TModel : class {
public TModel Model
{
get { return (TModel)HttpContext.Current.Items["model"]; }
}
}

Generics - Declarative Syntax For A Collection Of Value Types?

Jul 16, 2010

I know that in ASP.NET (talking about 2.0 here primarily) one can set a property on an object that takes a collection of things (an enumerable type I'm guessing is the trigger) and then reference it declaritivly. For example:

<ObjectDataSource properties="blahblahblah">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:Parameter />
</SelectParameters>
</ObjectDataSource>

It is the <asp:Parameter /> part which is the root of my question. Say I wanted a simpler collection on a type. Say a List<String> or if generics are out, an IntegerCollection or StringCollection. How would I use that declaratively? Is <string value=''> allowed, or can I put raw values into it like <StringCollection>string, string, string</StringCollection> or what?

EDIT:

I feel like I was not clear enough in my question. I understand that ObjectDataSource implements its SelectParameters property as a ParametersCollection, and that one can use that property declaratively (in an ASPX page) to set up Parameter types within that collection. What I'm wondering is if I made something like StringCollection as a property on another control, is there a syntax (in ASPX) for adding strings to that collection? Or would I have to define a wrapping class like how DropDownList takes ListItems to fill its collection?

Set The Inherits Attribute Of An ASPX Page Directive To A Class In An Arbitrary Assembly?

Feb 24, 2011

Is it possible to set the Inherits attribute of an ASPX Page directive to a class in an arbitrary assembly?

I need to modify an ASP.NET (1.1) application for which the source code was lost. In a new assembly (foo2.dll) I've created a replacement code-behind class that derives from the original class in the site's code-behind assembly (foo.dll). It seems easy enough to set the Inherits attribute of the Page directive to the new class name, but when I do that the web server gives me Could not load type 'Foo2.checkout2'. I am referencing the new assembly in the <assemblies> section of Web.config.

I don't see anything in the documentation to indicate that this scenario is unsupported, but I'm not certain that it is, either.

Original

<%@ Page Inherits="Foo.checkout" language="c#" Codebehind="checkout.aspx.cs" AutoEventWireup="false" %>

New

<%@ Page Inherits="Foo2.checkout2" CodeFile="checkout2.aspx.cs" CodeFileBaseClass="Foo.checkout" language="c#" Codebehind="checkout.aspx.cs" AutoEventWireup="false" %>

Error About "Inherits" Attribute Even Though It's Correct?

Sep 23, 2010

Having a really strange issue at the moment with an ASP.NET site I'm currently building. At the moment, I'm writting the HTML and CSS for a page called Dashboard.aspx. But when I go to view the page in a browser, half the time it throws up this error: ASPNET: Make sure that the class defined in this code file matches the 'inherits' attribute, and that it extends the correct base class (e.g. Page or UserControl). I've checked the Inherits attribute on the .aspx page, and it matches the Partial Class held in the VB code of Dashboard.aspx.vb file.

When I refresh, it will always come up with this error. Then after a minute or two, it will load fine with no problems. I had a quick look on Google and I couldn't find an answer to this issue. I have also changed the name of the partial class (and the content placeholder on the .aspx file, thinking that may have caused a conflict) and nothing I do seems to fix it. Could anyone shed any light on what's going on?

MVC :: Cannot Assign Timespan Display Format Attribute On Create/Edit And Display Views

Jul 6, 2010

inside my model metadata, i have a timespan field that would like to display in all Create, Edit and Display views like "hh:mm". For this, is set DisplayFormatAttribute as follows:

[Code]....

When i try to create a new model object, the time field gets displayed as "00:00:00" im my model (00 is the initial values) instead of "00:00". Is there something i am doing wrong? Note that the same approach works for date fileds, where i want to be displayed as "dd/MM/yyyy" (for this is assign "{0:dd/MM/yyyy}" to the display format attribute).

How To Get Value Of Property By Name Through Generics Of A Class

May 11, 2010

I have a class, let's say class Sample. Sample has unknown properties but inherits an interface ISample. Said interface includes one method which I'm trying to create. This interface has a method called getPropertyValue(object o, string PropertyName).

It returns the value of the o.PropertyName using generics (unless you have a better suggestion). How do I write it? In other words, I want to be able to pass the name (as a string) of a property and return its value. Samples in C# preferrable but VB ok and any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Understand Polymorphism When Using Generics In C#?

Aug 25, 2010

I am having a problem understanding how polymorphism works when using generics. As an example, I have defined the following program:

public interface IMyInterface
{
void MyMethod();
}.....

So, at least I haven't completely misunderstood that. I am unsure exactly how I am to write a method that accepts a generic collection of classes that conform to the same interface.

I have a plan to completely hack around this problem if need be, but I would really prefer to do it properly.

MVC :: 3 RC2 - Convert ASPX Syntax To Razor Syntax For Asp:Hyperlink?

Dec 15, 2010

For reporting we used report RDLCs and displayed using an ASPX form. We implemented using the route as shown below. This resulted in forcing us to use the page route below and also to use the hyperlink instead of the normal Action Link. The question is how do we convert the asp:hyperlink ASPX syntax to Razor syntax.

//Custom route for reports routes.MapPageRoute( "ReportRoute", // Route name "Reports/{reportname}", // URL "~/Reports/{reportname}.aspx" // File );
<li><asp:HyperLink ID="hypReport" runat="server" NavigateUrl="<%&#36;RouteUrl:routename=ReportRoute,reportname=StaffRpt%>">Staff Report</asp:HyperLink></li>

Web Forms :: Multiple Pages With The Same Inherits Value?

Oct 7, 2010

This maybe bad practice but it's the way things are currently done here. We have a template .aspx file and when someone creates a new page they take a copy of this page and rename it and it's .vb counterpart, as well as changing the CodeFile attribute in the .aspx page. What doesn't change is the Inherits attribute, this is always 'template_file'. Recently I had an issue where I uploaded a new web.config you out testing server and all the pages started erroring, I can't remember the exact error but it was because all the pages had the same Inherits value. I changed all the pages so they had unique Inherits values and all was good again.

How To Create A Custom Class That Inherits From System

Apr 22, 2010

I wanted to create a custom class that inherits from System.Exception and adds a few properties and methods specific to the project.

The issue I'm seeing is that a standard try/catch block catches generic Exception class and the compiler thinks that converting that to my custom class is OK. However, at runtime if the actual error is something else like a a System.Net.WebException for instance, then at runtime it will not convert to my custom class. Then my own error catch throws an InvalidCastException.

Obviously the one thing I don't want to happen is to have my error logging methods throw errors on their own...

So, how can I convert ANY exception to something that my custom class can use?

Here's a code example:

Csharp Code:

[code]....

Now, this code builds just fine... VS2008 and VS2010 have no issue with converting an "Exception" to "MyErrorClass", but at runtime it certainly doesn't like converting a "WebException" to "MyErrorClass"...
