Point Two Separate Websites To The Same Profile Database?
Apr 30, 2010
I'd like two websites to have read/write access to the same user profile database (named "aspnetdb" by default). Presumably this is possible by configuring the websites appropriately in the web.config.

I have a web application which uses membership and profiles. I successfully used the WebProfileBuilder extension, so my profile class is correctly generated, and is working nicely. However, after a new request of my client, I need now to move that profile management part into another assembly (so I'd be able to get profile information in a windows service running on the same machine).
What I made is created the new assembly, moved my generated profile file, and tried to use it from the other assembly, but without any success. I always get a SettingsPropertyNotFoundException. My thought is that the profile system doesn't know where to find its connection information, so I tried to add the connectionstring and provider in the app.config of this assembly, but this doesn't seem to work.

For the login control that I am using, there is a connectionstring which is automatically created in the web.config file.I ran an .exe file which populated the specified database with all the asp login related tables and stored procedures...
<connectionStrings>
<remove name="LocalSqlServer"/>
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=localmachineName;Initial Catalog=DBName;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=DBUserName;Password=password" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
How can I point the login control to a different Database based on the database selection by a user i.e. the user can change the name of the database and so the login should point to that database.

In dotnetnuke, I have two sites located on different location. Now I want to point these two sites to the same database. Is it possible to point to same database.
I even tried pointing it from web.config, but thats not working. I don't want to work with child portals, because i have already created site on other location and all the source codes are under that, but when I create child Portal, it creates new portalnumber folder under portals, and it just has two folders in it, Users and Cache, I dont understand how to place codes, as DNN creates lots of folders while creating new site, which are missing here.

I was just wondering if anyone has ever had to port the schema across? Are there any experts that could pitch their opinions on the achievability of this (mad) idea? I'm using the IBM Migration Toolkit and as expected its throwing a bunch of translation errors some of which were relatively easy to solve (vendor specific function calls for example) and some will take quite a while to pin down and work round.... however this is not my main concern.
If completed I expect I am going to have to basically rework all the System.Web.Profile/Roles/Membership namespace classes etc to work round the SQL limitations of informix (i.e. IDS11.x SQL server doesnt have a DEFAULT (newguid()) so that would have to be put into the calling method) (and any MVP comments really as I can slap my boss round with the weight after he ludicrously agreed to this project for a client without doing any research...)

the account we use to copy/publish websites to our web server is not allowing us access to push websites. I've added this account to the permissions in the links listed in the below link, but i don't have success when trying to push remotely. When the account is in the local admins account, everything works flawlessly, but we are not allowed to have it in there. http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vssetup/thread/31be047e-4716-4974-b8a1-be0111b50199 I've googled and searched a lot for this particular error, but am not finding an answer that helps. We get this error, 'Unable to create the Web 'http://edea01/test/planning'. You are not authorized to perform the current operation', and the above link is the scenario that matches mine the most. I don't do develompment work, but am asked to figure out this connection problem.

At current we have about 100 websites that we host, a lot of those are database drive, what i wanted to do is build a script that would let me enter the details for this website into a DB (domain name, ftp username, password, database name, username and password etc) and then download that website / database on a regular basis
I wanted to do this in .net so i could add it into our intranet and add some reporting so when our clients log into the extranet they can see their website has been copied etc

I'm trying to plan a series of websites that all share many of the resources such as css/jscript/images/content etc. For this reason I wanted to run all of the websites under the same application and IIS profile, but depending on the URL being used change the masterpage and theme/skin.
The ASP.NET membership database seems as if it was designed with this goal in mind because it allows you to setup multiple applications, however I believe the purpose for which this was built was to allow applications to be run under virtual directories/fodlers, not on seperate urls.

I'm using SqlDataSource and at the point of adding a record, I've called SqlDataSource_UploadNewsLetter_Inserting. In here, I'm testing a value, and if it's true, I need to stop the insert from taking place. But how can I stop the database insert at this point?

Currently, we have our ASP.NET applications running on windows server 2003. All of our data resides on an IBM ISeries / AS400. The 400 people are going to be creating massive new tables with millions of records. Because of this, I've been asked to look into the idea of putting new ASP.NET pages on the IBM ISeries server. This server uses APACHE. I have read that to do this, I will need to use the Mod_Mono Apache module. I would like to come up with a list of benefits and drawbacks to this new idea. Initially, it seems like this is a bad idea for a few reasons:
Security: if a users gets unauthorized access to our local server(s), they will only have access to either DB or web server, not both. Maintainability: Microsoft ASP.NET is easier to implement on a Microsoft Windows Server. Problem Solving: I will have to first determine if an issue is due to the ISeries server, or the Apache server, or the ASP.NET application. This could be countered by saying that I would already have to determine if the issue is due to Windows server, or ASP.NET application. However I have better experience with troubleshooting on a windows box that I am familiar with.
Problem Creating: I could escentially create a problem that not only takes down the web server, but the database as well, and other RPG programs running on the ISeries. Resources: The database server will not have to server my application, it will only have to retrieve the data for it.
Drivers: The windows server already contains many drivers and .DLL's that are used... will these even exist on the ISeries? How easy (if even possible) would it be to get them on the ISeries if they dont exist..? A few positive thoughts: The application will reside on the same server as the data, thus, it may be quicker at retrieving data from these millions of records in a table. This was the main point as to why I should look into this possibility. Single point of failure. We no longer have to worry about two servers going down and causing this application to be unavailable...

I was asked to build a couple of small and basic websites, without the use of database connections, just plain forms with information and a couple of images and forms. So my question is, if I only use those "html" controls of the toolbox, the performance of the site will increase against those with lots of .net controls?
Some one told me to use php or any script language to do that kind of stuff, but I only know to code in .net.

I have access to two seperate databases (mySQL) located on two servers. I need to get the data, link the tables on a key field and display the results in a datagrid. My challenge is that if the search criteria changes for the display it affects rows returned from on table and should thus automatically affect the linked table and resulting data returned.
what the best approach would be to achieving this? So far I have set up a dataset with a dataadapter and table for each connection and then linked the tables in the dataset. The problem that I'm having is getting the linked resultsets to work.
On my form I have the datagrid with two Objectdatasources one for each dataadapter and i believe that's where I'm going wrong...

We have a ASP.NET 3.5 application where we want each user to have their own database. Everyone uses the same web application, but the database their data is kept separate from all others. So every customer has his own database. All database structures are identical, so the only thing the application has to do is connect to the right one when the user logs in.
I envision that we look up a connectionstring to their data at the time they log in and set it globally for that session. With Linq, the connection is handled automatically though, in the background, based on the setting in the web.config file. Unlike SQL Server where you set it each time you use it, with Linq it is hidden in the .NET generated class files. So how do we make this vary by user, while using the same application for everyone?

I'm working on a new asp.net 4.0 resume web site. I'm starting off with SQL Server Express 2005 and using the standard security and login features given with ASPNETDB.mdf. My site will be hosted on GoDaddy.com.
Quesiton. Should the tables that will contain the information that users will be putting in like resumes, contact information and such go into ASPNETDB.mdf or should it go into a separate database.

This question may have been asked before, but I'm looking for a different answer than what I've seen.
Our website is in ASP.NET and we use the model-view-presenter pattern to get business logic out of the markup codebehind.
Is there an accepted pattern for web services for getting business logic out of the codebehind? It seems like putting the logic in a 'presenter' is misleading since the calls don't really present anything to the user, and may not even send back data to the client.

I am working on a multi-lingual application Assume the following:
Database has 50 tables and application has to support 5 languages
Which is the best way to design the database:
1. Include a langugae column for each table. Repeat the values for each language. Say i have a country table which has 100 countries in it. Then my design will contain 500 rows (100 for each langugae)
2. Create a separate table which will contain the translations for all the 50 tables in with a foreign key to the parent table.
Which is more efficient out of the above two.

System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

I have an issue where I am running out of database space on my hosting provider. As it turns out, the aspnetdb database is more than 6x our application database. We are using anonymous profiles and there are 21 fields stored in each user profile.
Upon analysis, most of this data is not required to be stored - it is simply wasting space. The part that is wasting the most space (5 binary objects) are not even used by any of the public users. I would like to remove these binary objects from all of the user's profiles without deleting the profiles, but I can't seem to find any documentation on how to do this.
I can remove the fields, which will take care of users going forward, but I need to retroactively delete these fields from the aspnetdb database to free up space. Since each user manages their own profiles, I am unsure how to create an automated procedure to delete these fields out each anonymous user's profile.

I have done the following: Added additional data to the profile table. However, the information is in a string. I am not sure how to extract the information using SQL so that I have the additional data separated. Additionally, I am not too sure how to call this information back into the webpage, once the customer log ins.

I use the default ASP.NET Profile Provider which lets me define user properties in web.config.
I now no longer want to use one of these user properties. I want to delete all traces of it.
I can remove the property from the list of properties in web.config however, I suspect, the stored values for this property will still be held in the aspnet_Profile table for each user.
Is there an easy way to clean out all traces of the data for a property that's no longer used from the aspnet_Profile table?
