Servercontrols - Mixing Server Controls With Client Controls
Nov 3, 2010
I normally use server controls i.e Textbox so i can get access to the server side event.
But what if i don't need access to the server side event and i am going to place some jquery or javascript on the textbox for example.
Can i use a standard HTML (client controls) ?

Is it possible to set a specific ID on an ASP.NET server control? Everytime I assign an ID and run the web form the ID changes.
For Example:
<asp:TextBox ID="txtName" runat="server"></asp.TextBox>
Gets translated into this:
<input id="ct100_ContentPlaceHolder1_txtName" type="text" />
I think this is do to me using master pages, but if so how can I be sure a control will have a certain ID(for javascript purposes). I placed the auto-generated id in my javascript and it is working, but I would prefer to have used the id's that I originally assigned them. Is this possible? (This is for version:ASP.NET 3.5)

I want to be able to do something like this
<test:TabControl id="" runat="server"....>
<ItemTemplate>
<tabItem label="tab1" />
<tabItem label="tab2" />
</ItemTemplate>
</test>
The idea being here is that the only acceptable items in "ItemTemplates" are the tabitem types. There are many asp.net controls that use this, for example the ScriptManager class only allows you to specify certain types of objects under its various collections. Maybe thats the key to this.. I want to add a collection as opposed to a template. The idea is that in code I will then iterate over each "tabItem" and create the tab as I want it to look (probably rendering div's etc). Ive had a look at most of MSDN link on how to create templated controls but it doesnt seem to do exactly what I want it to. Would be grateful for some assistance.

I am applying a field validator on a listbox which works when no item is selected in the textbox and some(most often the submit button) control is made to postback to the server.Now the problem is that if a person has entered the page and want to logout it still gives the same exception messages(which it should) rather than logging out of the page.I am using ASP.NET with c# as back-end.I want the the logout button(rather all except the submit button) to function prior to the validation

I have created an Asp.Net Ajax Server Control that will be dropped on several aspx pages. I have created an HTMLGenericControl within the OnInit method of the control. This control is a div. Within the code I also need to add an onclick event to a button so that this div is shown.
However, when I call divName.ClientID within the control to pass it to the javascript it doesn't include the part of the ID before the "divName" section of the rendered control id - ct01_ct01_divName.Here is part of the OnInit() method within the ASP.Net Ajax Server Control.[Code]....

There are no errors with my Javascript. The Javascript returns false, and the form is submitted. Additionally when setting UseSubmitBehavior to false the form still submits. What am I missing to prevent the form from being submitted?

I have created a user control that has a gridview. During binding I set some common properties like height and width. To do so, I have created public properties. I have created the public property so that user can also set the height and width themselves. But if user didn't specify then I use my defaults.
My problem is that user settings are always overridden by my default settings. I want to set the default values as the control is rendered on the page and then if user apply his settings then it shold override. Which event/method is best on user control to jandle such scenario? Where should I write the code to call my default settings so that it is first thing that happens? What is the user control life cycle?

is it posible to add client side functionality to a custom server control in vb.net?i am looking at msdn library and there is no code for vb :/ http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa719700%28v=VS.71%29.aspxI fount this on MSDN Library Adding Client Capabilities to a Web Server ControlWhat i'm trying to do is to add some client functionality to my control, so that you can get or set some properties/values on client side. From the above link i see that this is doable with Ajax Server Control, but i don't have it, i have Custom Server Control. Can i do this with Custom Server Control and how?

In ASP .NET 2.0, I've created a user control which is meant to work as a dropdown or popup by using an <input type="button" id="btnTogglePopup" runat="server" style="display:inline"... /> and <div id="divPopup" runat="server" style="display:none" ... /> the rest of the controls are contained inside this div, and they do mantain their values between posts, etc. This button 'runs at server' but it's not intended to post back or submit.It just toggles the popup (div) visible/hidden using Javascript client code by setting the div's style display property to "none" or "block" The problem I'm having is that when a page containing this control posts back, the state visible/hidden of the div is not maintained. If the user had the popup open, after the postback, it will display closed.I've read a bunch by now about ViewState & ControlState, and have the save and load contol state methods working, but when I step thru them they load old values (setting the popup to hidden all the time),and the popup doesn't work! I've come to think that b/c when the button is clicked,the visible state of the div is changed in client code w/o a postback, maybe I have to maintain this state info in a hidden fiel or something like that?At the same time I don't want to have a hidden field if it's unnecessary,and I may just doing something wrong.

We are Running Windows 7 or Windows 2008 using integrated pipeline (not classic) and we are Getting 404 Errors when mixing MVC with Website and / or WebApplication ProjectsHowever, this problem doesn't exist when I run off the web server locally in visual studio, only when I use IIS 7.5. Is there anything special you need to configure in IIS 7.5 in order for website and webapplication projects to use MVC? I wouldn't think so, but when I run mvcapplication on IIS 7.5

I am setting up a new website on new web servers that are running IIS 7.5, which is new to me. I have ran into a problem when deploying an ASP.NET app that is using the 4.0 framework. I get error messages about conflicts with the web.config file associated with the Default Web Site. The asp.net app defined in the default website is using the 2.0 framework currently. My 4.0 framework app is defined as an application under the default website. Both are using different Application Pools. I tried adding this to my 4.0 apps config file
<location path="." inheritInChildApplications="false">
How do I get around this web.config conflict issue? Update for error message: There is a duplicate 'system.web.extensions/scripting/scriptResourceHandler' section defined. The config file for the 4.0 app does not even have this section. The default website app does have this.

I am generating XHTML for a non-standard browser (Polycom Microbrowser). I would like to use the XhtmlTextWriter, but it ignores the border attribute on table. This is mostly like the correct thing to do since you should be using CSS to set the border. Alas, Polycom doesn't support CSS.
So when I Render the beginning and ending table tags, I need to use
HtmlTextWriter.WriteBeginTag/WriteEndTag instead of HtmlTextWriter.RenderBeginTag/RenderEndTag.
protected void RenderTableBegin(HtmlTextWriter writer)
{
//writer.AddAttribute(HtmlTextWriterAttribute.Border, "0");
//writer.RenderBeginTag(HtmlTextWriterTag.Table);
writer.WriteBeginTag("table");
writer.WriteAttribute("border", "0");
writer.Write(HtmlTextWriter.TagRightChar);
}
protected void RenderTableEnd(HtmlTextWriter writer)
{
writer.WriteEndTag("table");
//writer.RenderEndTag();
}
Other places in my code, I am using HtmlTextWriter.RenderBeginTag/RenderEngTag. Are there any known issues with mixing these?

If I have something like the following:
<asp:TextBox id="test" runat="sever"></asp:TextBox>
<asp:RequiredFieldValidator runat="server" ControlToValidate="test"
ErrorMessage="Required"></asp:RequiredFieldValidator>
<asp:Label runat="server" id="lblStatus"></asp:Label>
if in the code behind, I set the label to "You must enter a value if the textbox is empty" to validate it on the server side and this is fine, but if javascript is enabled, I don't want to show the client side validation and the server side label together. Is this something where I would just have to disable the client-side validators if javascript was enabled?

I've been trying to get a custom validator component working that ensures at least one checkbox from a checkboxlist has been checked. I've been used some code I found on dotnetjunkies.com but the client-side validation didn't work. I've been attempting to modify it to get the client-side javascript validation to work with no luck. Basically, I compile the below code into a DLL and add it to my bin folder.

I work in a suite of ASP.NET applications that have several different "modules". The applications all share a main menu, so they all link to one-another. The modules are the high-level areas of the application. So, for example, it might be Payments, Orders, Customers, Products, etc. And Payments and Orders are in one app and Products and Customers are in another. Some of these menu links are "deep links", for example it might be a link to a particular page within the Customers module, such as Create New Customer.
We are about to start a project that will add several more modules to this suite, probably as a new .NET application. I'm thinking about doing these new modules in Silverlight (for various reasons that are not material to the question). If I were to do that, I need to make the menu look the same as the menu in ASP.NET, as the users still need to feel like they are inside one "application".
How should I organize the Silverlight project(s) so that I can "deep link" from ASP.NET pages into particular modules in the Silverlight app? What is even the best idea for creating these different Silverlight "modules"? If I had something that would've been a page in ASP.NET (for example - Create Customer), should each one of those be a separate Silverlight app? Or should it be a separate User Control? Or something else? Should I reuse our shared ASP.NET menu, and deep link to different Silverlight "modules" even within the new application? Or should I reimplement the menu in Silverlight for navigation within the app? Are there menu controls for Silverlight that look similar to ASP.NET menus (with flyout submenus in this case)? Could I maybe even share a SiteMap XML file between them?

I have a list of items on an ASP.net page. That list is selectable in that whenever the user clicks on one, the page does a postback and the server code stores the index or some unique identifier of the picture in a ViewState property indicating that it is currently selected.
I would like to minimize the load on the server and therefore I would like to store the index or unique identifier representing the image in some way on the client side. The best way I can think to do this is to store said information in a hidden field ), however I had two questions about this before I go crazy:
Is this a security risk in any way, shape or form (i.e., exposing implementation details of the page)?
Is there a better/best way to do this that is more industry-standard? Does ASP.net provide a framework to do this that is cleaner than my idea? Seems like this would be a fairly common requirement to me...

I have developed and multicolumn combo box server control using textbox and image(for arrow) as described in following sample
http://www.codeproject.com/KB/custom-controls/Multi_Column_Combo_Box.aspx
It is working fine. Now what i want is to implement is client side "onchange" event.
for e.g. if we want to call javascript function on selection change event of dropdownlist control then we can do it as follows
DropDownList1.Attributes("onchange") = "javascript:Validate();"
Here "onchange" is inbuilt client side event for dropdownlist control
Similarly i want such client side event that the is fired when selection is changed in my multicolum control,something like this
MultiColDropDown1.Attributes("onchange") = "javascript:Validate();"

I have a page with 4 fixed Tabs. Tabs 1 and 2 are always in position 1 and 2. However, the users are allowed to create their own tabs and add their own html content. I do this by creating a new tab in codebehind and inserting it into the tabcontainer AFTER the frist 2 and before the last 2 tabs. There could be several of these. EX: "F1 | F2 | U1 | U2 | U3 | F3 | F4" where F is a fixed tab and U is a custom tab.
As long as ALL tabs are visible then everything works fine after postbacks.
Based on user settings I sometimes hide fixed tab 1. Everything loads fine the first time. However, on postback The content on fixed tab 4 (always the last tab) is displayed on the bottom of EVERY tab (fixed or custom). It is still displayed in fixed tab 4.
A little background on the code:
Since the tabs are added dynamically they do not exist on postback and must be re-generated every time. This is done in Page_LoadComplete. I have tried it on PageLoad and it behaves the same way.
If I do not re-generate the pages on post back then the problem goes away - as do the custom tabs.
The only thing I could find was from last year, and was supposedly fixed (http://www.codeplex.com/AjaxControlToolkit/WorkItem/View.aspx?WorkItemId=16321
