Mixing Application Modules - Organize The Silverlight Project?
May 5, 2010
I work in a suite of ASP.NET applications that have several different "modules". The applications all share a main menu, so they all link to one-another. The modules are the high-level areas of the application. So, for example, it might be Payments, Orders, Customers, Products, etc. And Payments and Orders are in one app and Products and Customers are in another. Some of these menu links are "deep links", for example it might be a link to a particular page within the Customers module, such as Create New Customer.
We are about to start a project that will add several more modules to this suite, probably as a new .NET application. I'm thinking about doing these new modules in Silverlight (for various reasons that are not material to the question). If I were to do that, I need to make the menu look the same as the menu in ASP.NET, as the users still need to feel like they are inside one "application".
How should I organize the Silverlight project(s) so that I can "deep link" from ASP.NET pages into particular modules in the Silverlight app? What is even the best idea for creating these different Silverlight "modules"? If I had something that would've been a page in ASP.NET (for example - Create Customer), should each one of those be a separate Silverlight app? Or should it be a separate User Control? Or something else? Should I reuse our shared ASP.NET menu, and deep link to different Silverlight "modules" even within the new application? Or should I reimplement the menu in Silverlight for navigation within the app? Are there menu controls for Silverlight that look similar to ASP.NET menus (with flyout submenus in this case)? Could I maybe even share a SiteMap XML file between them?

+1 if you are specific to ASP.NET MVC projects.
Update 9:42 PM:
I am thinking about this from now as I need several developers across the globe to work on this project. We will be using VS 2010 and I heard some thing about web application templates.

I've looked all over the web for the best way to organize an ASP.NET MVC2 project. I've only seen examples of people using the default template for MVC2 projects. But is this the best way to organize your project if it is going to contain a large number of files?
We're in the process of building an application that is heavily built around jQuery for UI and ajax using JSON. So, as you can imagine, we will have many custom .js support scripts.
In our solution, we have placed all our support libraries (3rd party and custom) into respective projects. The MVC2 project that is also in the solution is using the default MVC2 template.
In the MVC2 project, the "starting" structure is still pretty much unchanged. Under the Controllers directory, we have each controller AccountController.cs and HomeController.cs (for example). Under the Views directory, we have three subdirectories named Account, Home, and Shared. In the Scripts, directory we have also divided that up with three directories, Account, Home, and Shared. And finally we have the Models directory, that is also divided into Account, Home, and Shared subdirectories.
As you can see we haven't deviated from the basic template that much. But, as we start adding stuff to this, we're realizing how cumbersome this might become when we get upwards to 20 or 30 views and 100 support .js files.

I have been asked to join a very small team where one main developer has been buiding the web app (.NET 4.0) during ~6 months. The project should be delivered within next 2 months.
After first look at the code I can say that I would never allow it to go to production (things like catch { }, no tests at all with WebForms etc).
So the code quality is incredibly low.
My task is to improve that and still deliver the solution. So I plan to start with unit testing and MVC2 reimplementing most of the functionality (though using some of the existing code).
I estimate that I will need about 6 weeks to catch up with the current progress and be on te same functionality level as the application will be in 6 weeks.
The problem is that the main developer who has been working on the project seems to be really starting in IT and many basic things are unknown to him. It will take significant amount of time and effort to educate him how to do the proper testing, development and apply some patterns.
I am ready to take responsibility for the reimplemnting the application but at the same time I don't want the main developer to be on idle but as he won't be able to significantly contribute to the better-world project at this stage I am not sure what would the best way to keep productivity high for both of us.
Currently I think following solution is good enough: He proceeds doing what he does until I will catch up with him and then start working on a new project together.
The problem is that of course this approach is not very productive as one developer will do better-world project while the other will proceed with what he did, effectively doing similar tasks.
Another approach would be to pair and try to do things together, but again not sure how productive we will be.
Can you suggest how we could better organise the work together in order to be most efficient for the overall project?

I'm building ASP.Net MVC 2 application using Repository pattern. My question is how to organize my application. Most of the examples I see on the web, using separate Modelproject with Repositories and Entity Data Model. These examples are not using MVC Model folder.
I have 3 projects in my solution.
1. Application (MVC Project)
- Models
- Repository (Here I want to create Repository folder for my Repository)
- IRepository (Also I want to create IRepository folder for my Interface)
2. DataModel ( Which will have my Entity Data Model and my POCO T4 Template)
3. Test

In a website, I see some developers put code into app_code, and sometimes appcode (due to some bug), other files into DataModel, and other files into miscellaneous folders.
Is there a standard approach to organizing code within an application?
How is it different between an ASP.NET, MVC, Silverlight, Console, Database, and WCF application? The reason I mention WCF is because many people seem to have a shared types library that is linked between the server and client code.
Where can I learn these common practices without having to try, fail, and try again. I'd rather just learn it once from the experts.

I have a silverlight application project that I need to add to an ASP.NET Project. I know it can be done because you can choose to have both when you first create a silverlight project, i'm just not sure how you would do it after the fact.

I'm working on a new website, written in VB.Net using ASP.NET MVC2, there is a need to call "legacy" VB6 code for various complex bits of business logic. The VB6 is a framework consisting of many dlls and is very stateful, we are pretty much emulating how the framework is used in our client application, ie the application runs (lots of state setup), a user logs on (even more state) and then loads a file (even more state).
I've been provided with a "web service interface framework" to get this up and running for use in the web app, this "web framework" hides the legacy code behind a thin layer running under IIS. The idea being that thread pooling provided by IIS will reduce memory use etc etc. I can't help but believe that the guy who provided this has missed the point, since each instance is so stateful there is no way that a thread pool can work, since once a user logs on using one particular object from the pool, no other object will be capable of servicing that client (since it wont have the state)! Also, adding a web service interface and associated SOAP marshalling is a huge overhead compared to calling the objects directly.
The only way I can think of doing this is either a single legacy interface instance which is used by all clients and blocked by each call until it completes, or a thread per client with each legacy interface object being created in a new thread and living for the life of the client.
None of these is ideal but with the amount of code in question and the prolonged migration programme to .net (2+ years and still stateful) I can't think of an alternative. We run the original client app in a citrix environment for some customers so I expect that it could also run ok with thread per client given a beefy enough server and that the overheads of the framework itself should be lower than when the client app is involved.

I've ran trough many websites and tried soo many things that I've finally decided to try it creating a question of my own. This is the error that I get when I try to access my WCF project from my Silverlight 4 app. anyone have any idea on how to fix this error? PS. If anyone needs any more information let me know.
An error occurred while trying to make a request to [URL] This could be due to attempting to access a service in a cross-domain way without a proper cross-domain policy in place, or a policy that is unsuitable for SOAP services. You may need to contact the owner of the service to publish a cross-domain policy file and to ensure it allows SOAP-related HTTP headers to be sent. This error may also be caused by using internal types in the web service proxy without using the InternalsVisibleToAttribute attribute. see the inner exception for more details.

I have been working with ASP.net for a while now and was very familiar with how the page lifecycle worked. I am now trying to incorporate Silverlight into my ASP.net project and I am a little confused on how it works with the ASP page lifecycle.
For example, with Silverlight, I understand you need to access the server using the web service. I am able to populate a Silverlight datagrid by calling a stored proc through the web service in the loaded event. My problem is the DataGrid does not populate until ALL the code in the loaded event has executed. As you can see below, I want to do a simple calculation after I populate the DataGrid. I need to populate the DataGrid first and then do the calculation, but the calculation is done before the grid populates.
What I need to happen:
When I call 'tpService.getStepsAsync()', I need it to go to the web service to grab the data and then populate the DataGrid. Then I need 'a = 2 + 2' to execute. How can I get this to occur?

I have two projects: A web application project, that has a webpage that hosts a Silverlight application, as well as a web service A Silverlight application project, the one hosted in the above web application
If I debug the Silverlight application, it wants to run this with a generated web page, which will of course not start my web application, and web service calls fails due to some cross-site security model. So even if I have the web application running, the Silverlight application won't use it.
If I debug the Web application (that is, set it as a start project and hit Debug), then the Silverlight application is apparently correctly hosted, but I can't debug it. Any breakpoints in it shows up as those hollow circles.
So what am I doing wrong? How should I configure my projects so that I can start the web application, host my Silverlight application, and debug it?
I'm betting it is one of those "dough" moments when someone tells me, but I can't figure it out.
This is Visual Studio 2008, .NET 3.5 and Silverlight 3.

I've been reading many articles and can't seem to get my ASP.NET 4 web forms project to do Routing/URL rewriting.
I have added the following reference to the ASP.NET project:
System.Web.Routing
It then added the following line to the web.config file:
<compilation debug="false" targetFramework="4.0"><assemblies><add assembly="System.Web.Routing, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/>
</assemblies></compilation>
In the global.asax file I want to add the routes, but it is not recognising RouteTable and RouteCollection keywords.
How do I get these to be recognised so that I can create the rules in the global.asax file?

I have an MVC 2 web application which uses models auto-generated by LINQ. When I add a Silverlight project to my solution, generating a new strongly-typed View fails with the message:
Compiling transformation: The type or namespace name 'Data' does not exist in the namespace 'System' (are you missing an assembly reference?). I understand this is most likely because Silverlight does not access the System.Data namespace (at least, I can't add the reference to my Silverlight app). However, it's not really important - I'm just trying to generate an .aspx View at this stage, not a Silverlight View.
Is there any way to get this template generation to work, or do I have to create my Silverlight project outside the solution and build it separately? I was kind of hoping to take advtage of WCF RIA and some of the other goodies one gets from including the Silverlight app within the main solution... anybody got a fix?

I have a Silverlight site hosted in an asp page, it has been developed using vs2010 using .net 3.5 framework and silverlight 4. It all works on my dev box. However when I publish the site and get it deployed I get the error:
Could not load file or assembly 'Moe.Tactical.Ttas.Web' or one of its dependencies. This assembly is built by a runtime newer than the currently loaded runtime and cannot be loaded.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'Moe.Tactical.Ttas.Web' or one of its dependencies. This assembly is built by a runtime newer than the currently loaded runtime and cannot be loaded.
I have checked that the ISS asp setting are using 2.0.50727, and that all my references are using that runtime also.
I am not sure what to do to work out what the missing dependencies are at this point (I don't have access to the deployment box, I will have to go and sit with a system admin).

I'm trying create unit testing for an existing website project (not web application project). I cannot access my under test classes unless I use accessor. However, if I use accessor, I have problem to initiate an object with passing arguments. I only want to create unit tetsing for App_Code. After searching web, and I found that I'd better to create a web application project using my current existing website project. From solution explorer, add new project ->using existing website. My questions is: what impact will have for my current website to create the new project? Should I just convert my current website to web application? If do that, will it cuase problems on my website? I am new on asp.net, still learning..

I just converted an ASP.NET Web Site Project to a Web Application Project in VS 2010. After I run the application though it seems that my class polymorphism broke. I don't have a clue as to why this could occur.

I recently updated my VS2010 website project from .NET 3.5 to 4.0. Everything was working fine in the website project. Today I decided to migrate the website to a web application project as I have learned this is the best way to work in .NET. I split out all my class files into a separate class library and copied all my other content into my new project. Then I updated all the references and web.config.
When I build the class library, everything works great. The problem is happening when I try to build/debug the web application project. It is acting like all the controls are missing and it is also throwing a bunch of compile errors about the public properties I have in my master pages.
Control errors: "The name 'INSERT CONTROL NAME HERE' does not exist in the current context"
Master page errors:'System.Web.UI.MasterPage' does not contain a definition....
It is giving these errors for every single control and master page property in my entire solution.I notice when I add a new web.form to this project, it also adds a filename.aspx.designer.cs file in addition to the .aspx and .aspx.cs file. My existing files do not have these extra files since they were created in a different .NET version.
UPDATE: It seems I was missing the step where I need to right click on the new application folder and select "Convert to web application". I just did that and it seems to be a little bit better...
Now it is choking on Literals that are inside single quotes:
<div class='<asp:Literal ID="CssClassLiteral" runat="server"></asp:Literal>'>
It doesn't see this literal when it does the conversion... Is the above valid code or should I implement that functionality another way?

I was not able to do unit testing for our existing web site project. I converted the web site project to a web application project. I did some unit testing and changes on the converted web application project. However, my co-worker was doing UI testing on the web site project. We need put UI testing and unit testing to the web application project. Is it possible to move the UI testing code that my co-worker did to the web application project I am working? If so, how do you do it?
