Sorting By Price / Alphabetical Order?
Feb 6, 2011
I have a repeater using paging (see code below) I want to be able to offer a button that sorts the results by price and one for alphabetical order. I'm not sure how to achieve this with my current system. Would it just be a case of altering the sql select statement on click?
Private Sub BindRepeater()
Dim dv As DataView
dv = CType(SqlDataSource3.Select(DataSourceSelectArguments.Empty), DataView)
PagedResults.DataSource = dv
PagedResults.AllowPaging = True
PagedResults.PageSize = 9
PagedResults.CurrentPageIndex = CurrentPage
lnkBtnNext1.Visible = Not PagedResults.IsLastPage
lnkBtnPrevious1.Visible = Not PagedResults.IsFirstPage
Repeater1.DataSource = PagedResults
Repeater1.DataBind()
doPaging()
End Sub

I'm an ASP newbie, so I'm trying to muddle through setting up this image gallery piece by piece as I learn the language. This particular issue has me completely stumped though. The site in question: I'm very confused as to why the navigation menu is listing out of alphabetical order. Here's the code that I'm -pretty sure- is governing this chunk of info:

explain what the Dynamic Data team was thinking when they designed grid sorting in Dynamic Data scaffolded tables? Sorting defaults to using all columns, in the order the appear in the model, often arbitrary very counter-productive.We've just had a run in with the 'out-of-the-box' sorting, and solved it with a simple SortExpression attribute on MetaTables. Another, even simpler solution would have been for them to avoid any sorting, allowing the DB to provide a default order based on clustered index.

as part of a project I am working on, I need to output the alphabetical 'name' of the number. This is better illustrated with an example.960Nine Hundred and SixtySo it'd convert '960' to 'Nine Hundred and Sixty'. Is there an easy way to do this in C#.NET? Also, if so, how easy would it be to apply the same function to a decimal number? I'm assuming if I can figure out how to convert a integer as above, I can just split the decimal number... so I'd have something like this 960.23 Nine Hundred and Sixty (units) andTwenty Three (units)

Moderators Note: THIS ISSUE IS BIG FOR ME AND EVEN IF POSSIBLE, GET THE REPLY FROM THE DESIGNER OF GRIDVIEW. I have been looking for him for long. I am really fed up with reviewing a good lot of web pages on how we can possibly customize the gridview to enable sorting and paging. So many sites have listed out a lot of information and so many guidances. But the problem is that one works out fine and the other is a burden. I really feel bad about being given the job of customizing this kind of a gridview which has no user friendly approach to it. Also, this control is rendered without the pager links inside the <tfoot> tag. I have tried the Pear Pager in php. It is that good and easy to use and compared to that, the gridview in asp.net is the worst ever control i have ever tried so far.
1. i can use the images to indicate the sorting direction
2. I can have the custom pager like
<<Previous 1 2 3 .. 7 Next >>.
When i click the next when i am viewing the page at 3 , the pager links should change as
<<Previous 2 3 4 .. 7 Next >>
Kindly look into this type of requirement and firstly tell me whether this is possible with the gridview control. I would like this request even to be escalated to the designers of the gridview control also, so that Microsoft comes out with a reply THAT WORKS and not the kind of stuff like surfing through a lot of links and pages and finally wasting a lot of days precious time and still breaking the head with this useless control. I have spent a lot of time in searching for a perfect way. Not writing a code that is non-standard. I am really serious b'cos I have spent weeks in customizing this control. If I dont get a solid reply atleast now, I am going to generate all the output by HTML content by custom coding.

From my testing, it appears that the order of parameters for the UpdateParameters must match both the order of the bound fields on the form (asp:Formview), and the order of the parameters in the UpdateCommand. Is that correct? If so, why do the parameters have names if all that matters is the order? I tried both asp:ControlParameter and asp:Parameter. Maybe the more relevant question is why aren't the names used instead of the order, particularly for the form order?
So, given I display the Identity field (CID), and need that for the update, I cannot get the update to work without including it in the UpdateCommand. Of course, since it is an autonumber field in Access, I cannot actually set it. So, I had to add another field to the db (lngUpdateCID) that I could set. That can't be how it has to be done, but I could not figure out another way to do this.
The relevant code is below:

I have spent a long time to find a decent solution, but without success. I have a ListView where I want to make an alphabetical pager that can handle the letters from A-Z + ÆØÅ to be at the end of the pager after the letter Z. If the first letter of a word found in the database, it must come in the pager as a link. The letters of a word that is not in the database must appear in the pager without a link.

I don't know if its possible in ASP.NET (I'm assuming it is) but I've seen other websites where they have pager settings of grids that are actually linked to the first letter or first couple of letters of a certain field within the gridview. So.. if you have 1000 names... instead of guessing which page the name you're looking for is on, you would just click on "Sa" which would take you automatically to the page that "Sanders" was on. Can anybody tell me how to do that?

I have a data grid in which I have to display around 12,000 records. Even if I do paging it is difficult to display all the records. Is there any other control or something else so that I can display all these records. Even if I make these as alphabetical also, some times I have to load 1000 records in a page which is difficult.
