Test The Site Locally Over HTTPS?
Jul 6, 2010I need to test an ASP.NET site that requires SSL locally. I think IIS7 with the self-signing certs would do the trick, however, I am on XP.

The application pool randomly shuts down. I am assuming this is due to Rapid Fail Protection and errors are occuring that are triggering it. However... there are no errors being reported in the event logs. So my next inclination is to think of the possibilities of a memory leak. How do you test for memory leaks on a website running locally?
View 2 RepliesI have a form that's used to submit emails for a project. This uses the SMTP Client class and is currently delivering the emails to a local directory , for now.
There is some logic that checks to see if a mailbox is busy or unavailable. A message is displayed for the appropriate situation. There is also some logging and exception handling.
I want to know if there is a way to test this logic, logging and exception handling while this app is local. I don't know if there is a SMTP Status Code that's returned since this is being done locally and not with a real smtp server.
Is there a way to test this locally? Can these values be set manually in the code as a test?
My requirement/concern is to test web application locally in multiple browsers with various versions.
If any tool is available, please let me know..
I have asp.net website deployed on local server
And also i have a domain name
What i want that i want to integrate my locally deployed site with domain name.
(I have live(public) IP address as well)
We have a couple of ASP.NET applications running here at work and our users get the test site confused with the production site. What is the best way to help the users know they are at the test site. Is there a best practice for how this can be accomplished? Maybe have a custom control or something on the screen display "TEST SITE"?
View 1 RepliesI have a site (URL...) which loads and runs fine locally on the server itself, but when I try to access this externally from outside of the server (and firewall) will not load. In Safari for example, I get the message "Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding".I have other sites on this server that do load and operate fine so I don't belive this is a Firewall issue. One thing I did notice however is that when the error message appears, it seems like the site is trying to change the protocol from http to https.
I'm trying to debug this to find out what could be happening. I've tried looking into the IIS logs as well as the Event Viewer but I see nothing. I have even tried to turn on Failed Request Tracking but no errors are logged.
I have a site which is not a secured connection i.e. the URL starts with http://
I want this site to be migrated to https://
Does anyone know why the lock that is to show when on an https site would show, but then vanish once the page is done loading?

View 3 RepliesI'm working on a CMS that can run either with or without https enabled on the webserver. I'd like to be able to detect whether https is enabled or not, so that I can act accordingly (for example, display some https-related options to the administrator, and redirect to https for administrator logins).
I'm not looking for Request.IsSecureConnection because that only tells me if the current request is via https. I want something that will tell me whether the current bindings for the site in IIS include a binding for https at the same domain as the current request is on. So, for example, even if the current request is for [URL] and thus not secure, I want to know whether [URL] would work so I can (for example) redirect the user to it if they log in as administrator.
I've had no luck looking for anything in System.Web.Configuration that will tell me about the bindings of the current site, though.
The site is written in vb.net, and accessed via https.User randomly meets the warining dialog"This page contains both secure and non-secure items.Do you want to display the non-secure items?", after clicking 'Yes', 404 not found error page will be displayed, but by refreshing, the warning dialog and 404 page
all gone. Also by viewing source code from IE, I found '<meta content="Http://schemas.microsoft.com/intellisense/ie5" name="vs_targetSchema">' where only uses http protocol, Does this have any thing with the error user meets?
I'm currently trying to upgrade our build server at work, going from having no build server to having one!
I'm using JetBrains' TeamCity (having used ReSharper for a couple of years I trust their stuff), and intend to use NUnit and MSBuild.
However, I've come up with an issue: it appears that it is not possible to test an ASP.NET web site with NUnit. I had assumed it would be possible to configure it to test App_Code after a build, however it seems that the only way to do tests nicely is through converting the web site to a web application
How could I go about this? the testing needs to be able to be fired automatically from TeamCity.
We just re-worked about a dozen pages in a website we created - changing the masterpage - adding lots more CSS - changes to images and so on.
The production webserver runs this page using HTTPS:
What do I have to do in IIS to create another "website" that can be accessed? Doesn't the certificate refer to the specific site that's named in that cert?
provide detailed steps to setup IIS6 could not found good information by googling. Is there free SSL certificates that can be used only to test locally?
View 1 RepliesI have a hosted site and just added some additional error notification to my global.asax file and works like a charm. I decided to add the same logic to our test server and it doesnt work. The server.transfer never happens and the email never gets updated. Now i know the email works on the test and production server since we have other pages that use the same SMTP server name and setup as i have in the global file. Below is my code as it is in the file now. I setup a test page to cause an error and the page displays the detailed error which we dont want. But i would like to be notified if this happens. What am i missing? I can only assume that its a IIS confige issue, since the exact same code works on a hosted site, but not at work on our test or production servers. Here is the code i have in the global.asax

How can I test an application that I am publishing to a remote provider's IIS7 hosted site, with the VS2008 development server that is built in with VS2008 on an XP Machine?
My membership/roles work perfectly up on the remote host. On ths hosted IIS7 site when I try to access a secure directory it redirects to login, and I am able to login, however when I launch (debug - F5) from VS2008, it will provide that folder/resource, no questions asked. Same build, config, etc... nothing has changed.
I am running XP, and local IIS version installed is 5.1.
My guess is what is happening is that the new format required in the web.config is configured properly for IIS7 deployment, which is why it works remotely, but when running locally through VS2008/XP it is running with an older version on IIS and does not recoginize the new tags.
i have to do some message exchange with a 3rd party (in a website). When the client posts a page, i start the message exchange. When that doesn't succeed for some reason, i report this to the client by rendering the page with a message. On the background, in a separate thread, i start a process to send abort messages to the 3rd party. I can't do this while the user is waiting for the page to come back, because it might take a few minutes. But in a test project, the test ends when the message to the 3rd party is sent, and after the new thread is started. But it seems that the new thread also ends, when the test is done.
Is that normal behaviour?I do start the thread in a new class with a reference to 2 objects from the class which tries to send the message in the first place, may that be a problem?EDIT: it keeps running when the whole process is started in IIS
I am doing Automated coded ui testing in asp.net 2010 for web application. I am testing site and i need to know how can i create the test which will work with all browsers. For a web application I am using ASP.NET C# (OS- Windows7, .NET 4) and the task has done. But I don't know how to run it locally in Windows7 as well as in Server 2008(.NET 4 and IIS installed in server 2008). And I have to run it in both the platfrom.
View 3 RepliesThis may be obvious to many of you (hopefully!) I have a site under asp.net created using Visual Web Developer 2008 and MSSQL 2007 (all express editions)All ok so far.My PSP requires the addition of a couple of traditional ASP 'screens' to redirect payments to them. I cannot run this under VWD2008 development server as .asp are not allowed, so am looking to move to running it locally under IIS7 which is turned on.How do I alter the site to run on the IIS7 instance?
View 3 RepliesI've searched around and found a lot of advice saying to modify the hosts file as such:
127.0.0.1 mydomainname.com
I've done that, but my actual site at mydomainname.com is still being used. Any other troubleshooting steps I could take?
I have a asp.net mvc application.
Some pages require SSL, is there a way to mimick ssl locally through cassini or IIS 7?
Edit So I followed the directions for the answer below that linked to ScottGu's blog post.
i've created an ajax test call that works locally, but when i upload to my hosts(2 of them) i get nothing. My sample page is: Linkage to test page.
