Vb.net - Dropdownlist Within A Detailsview Not Being Set In Codebehind?
Jul 21, 2010
I have the following code in my codebehind Page_Load function that sets the default selected value of a dropdownlist in detailsview based on the name of a record returned from a sql data query.
Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
Me.Page.Title = "Editing record"
'Perform dropdown list population operations
Dim myDDL As DropDownList = DetailsView1.FindControl("reqCategoryDropDown")
If Page.IsPostBack = False Then
[Code]....
After which I set attempt to set the selected value of the dropdownlist as above. The page is still not setting the selected value.

I have a detailsview with three textboxes as itemtemplates. Each for holding a different date. To avoid the option of users entering invalid values the textboxes are disabled and the user can use a calender control to fill the dates. Because the textboxes are disabled I added a linkbutton to empty a date, if the user decides to clear it.
Asp:
[Code]....
In the code behind is the following for linkbutton on click:
[Code]....
Now, the problem is that no matter which linkbutton a user clicks all three textboxes are cleared/emptied. Why?

I have working code similar to the following in my Detailsview:
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource3" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:DATABASE %>"
SelectCommand="SELECT Id, PracticeId, FirstName, LastName, Notes FROM Providers WHERE Id=@Id"
UpdateCommand="UPDATE Providers SET
PracticeId = @PracticeId,
FirstName = @FirstName,
LastName = @LastName,
Notes = @Notes
WHERE Id = @Id"
InsertCommand="INSERT INTO Providers (
PracticeId, FirstName, LastName, Notes
) VALUES (
@PracticeId, @FirstName, @LastName, @Notes)">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:QueryStringParameter Name="Id" QueryStringField="Id" Type="String" />
</SelectParameters>
<UpdateParameters>
<asp:Parameter Name="Id" Type="Int32" />
<asp:Parameter Name="PracticeId" Type="Int32" />
<asp:Parameter Name="FirstName" Type="String" />
<asp:Parameter Name="LastName" Type="String" />
<asp:Parameter Name="Notes" Type="String" />
</UpdateParameters>
<DeleteParameters>
<asp:Parameter Name="Id" Type="Int32" />
</DeleteParameters>
</asp:SqlDataSource>
I would like to move all of this to codebehind so it's easier to work with programmatically. For instance the PracticeId is a selection from a dropdownlist that is populated from another table... i need to determine what the current selection is first so i can display the record / bind properly.

I am trying to target a control in a Detailsview in my codebehind, however I am getting an error "Name "control" is not declared" for example, i have a FileUpload field in the edit template of the detailsview, which I am trying to access as
FileField.PostedFile.SaveAs("directory")
I also tried adding a reference to the Detailsview id such as DetailsView1.FileField.PostedFile.SaveAs("directory")

I have a dropdown list where I need more than just a bound value and a display value. I am using this in the page load event to add a custom attribute:
[Code]....
I'm actually looping through a sqldatareader for a list of employees, but for simplicity just consider the single option added above. When I go to check the attribute EmpNum for the selected option, I am getting "null":
[Code]....
Now the really weird part...If I add an option in the HTML source identical to the one that gets added in the codebehind, the javascript function works for that row, but not the row added from codebehind. Here is the rendered HTML for the SELECT:
[Code]....
If I select the 1st record (added from HTML source at design time) the alert says "12345". If I select the 2nd record, the alert says "null". I CAN get the value ("999-99-9999") and the displayed text ("John Doe") for either record, just not the EmpNum attribute, even though the HTML is exactly the same. I am completely stumped on this one.

I have a DDL bound to a sqldatasource where the dataTextName is the storeName (varchar) and the dataValueField is the storeID (PK Int). I'm holding the value of the storeID in a user's profile (using ASP.NET membership profile). So, when a user is created, they're assigned to a store (or not...it's optional). When I edit the user, I populate the DDL with all the stores in the table, but I need to set the selected item to the storeID in the profile (if it exists)...I'm not sure at what point to do it though. In my codebehind, I bind the ddl to the datasource and insert an additional item: if not page.ispostback then
REM: bind the company ddl

In one of the steps of a wizard control are 2 dropdownlist which data come from 2 distinct queries and cascade from the 1st one to the 2nd one. Where and how can code for that data binding and cascading be placed since it seems codebehind window for both of the dropdownlists cannot be found in VS property or event windows?

I really have a big problem(stuck) with two dropdownlists inside a detailsview.I have 4 detailsview : DdlRt,DdlRt2,ddlMobv1,ddlMobv2. Basically what happens here is that DdlRt2 gets populated when DdlRt is selected and ddlMobv2 gets populated when a specific value from ddlMobv1 is selected.
In code posted above the detailsview has a "Update" command and the problem is when the update command is executed the data is successfully posted to the db BUT! THE VALUES from DdlRt2 and ddlMobv2 dissapear! And I can't insert any more Items. The only Item that stays in these two dropdownlists is the default "Select Department" item which is't set in codebehind but is set in .aspx.....I can't figure what I'm doing wrong here It must be something with databinding & events.
So my question is "Why can't I insert any more items to these two dropdownlists after the "Update" command on the DetailsView is set or how can I preserve the values that are already in"?
<asp:DetailsView ID="DetailsView1" runat="server" AutoGenerateRows="False" DataSourceID="odsRegister"

I was wondering if it is possible to convert a detailsview row into a dropdownlist, populated by data from an access table.
Also is it possible to attach a calendar to a row of the datailsview row, so that the row will be populated by a date upon user selection.

I'm attempting to load DropDownLists from the C# codebehind as the FormView switches modes to Edit and displays the EditItemTemplate. I present the data in a FormView ItemTemplate using text boxes. When the user selects Edit, I have been attempting to load the EditItemTemplate dropdownlists by creating a dataset and binding it to the control, without success.
I've successfully loaded them in previous projects from within the .aspx code using <asp:ListItem> and within the C# code behind using Control.Items.Add(new ListItem), which are essentially the same thing of course . This project is different in that I want to get the data from a stored procedure on a MSSQL server.
In my latest attempt, I can see the data in the datasets. I'm getting "Error connecting to database.'eitRace' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items.Parameter name: value"
I include the code below. If someone could point me to an example I would be greatful. There has to be an elegant way of accomplishing this.
[code]....

I have a dropdownlist bound to a table and the selection filters the detailsview. After a new record is inserted using the detailsview, the new record is displayed in the detailsview and the initial record is displayed in the dropdownlist. After the insert, how can I get the dropdownlist to display the new record?

I have a problem I have been googling the entire day and still have no soloution. I have a detailsview with 2 dropdownlists. Fisrt one is ddlCaregory. Second is ddlSubCategory. The value is passed from the first ddl to display the SubCategory linked to ddlCategory. Both ddlCategory and ddlSubCategory are Templatefields. This is also in VB.
The Details view has a sqlDataSource (sdsApplicants), ddlCategory has a Datasource (sdsCategory) and ddlSubCategory (sdsSubCategory). ddlCategories lists the data returned from sds Categories and save any changes to sdsApplicants. I can get ddlSubCat to display the correct SubCatagory bases on ddlcategory sesection but as soon as I try bind it to sdsApplicants I get the following error
'ddlSubCategory' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items.
Parameter name: value

I use DetailsView to insert rows in database. Row has fields id, subcategory_id etc. I want to fill dynamically dropdownlist ddl_subcategories, which is used in TemplateField. Selected item value of first dropdownlist ddl_categories is used as parameter for generating collection for ddl_subcategories. I try it with using UpdatePanel, but method DataBind returns error "Databinding methods such as Eval(), XPath(), and Bind() can only be used in the context of a databound control.".
There's code of web form

I am trying to use a DropDownList in a DetailsView for the ItemTemplate, InsertItemTemplate, and EditItemTemplate. I must bind this DropDownList to a SQL-Server support table using a function that returns a DataTable. I am not allowed to use a SQLDataSource in my backwards IT department. So, not only do I need to load the DropDownList, I also need to make the SelectedValue equal to the current record that I am viewing, editing.

I figure that this should be relatively straightforward, but I still can't get it to work. I have a gridview and a detailsview to set up shifts for students and teachers. I would like to be able to insert new shifts using a detailsview. I will limit the students, teachers and location to items that are in a dropdownlist. The problem is that when I handle the iteminserting event. the e.values collection doesn't contain all of the fields I want to populate. How do I add the new fields to the list. This is my codebehind:
Sub On_Inserting(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As DetailsViewInsertEventArgs)

I have a dropdownlist in the edititemtemplate of a detailsview. The dropdownlist is bound with an objectdatasource. The detailsview is bound to a seperate objectdatasource which connects it to the insert method. When the page loads the dropdownlist is bound properly. However, when I make a selection and select insert I get the following error: Could not find a property named 'DeptID' on the type specified by the DataObjectTypeName property in ObjectDataSource 'objCurrentProduct'. I've tried to remove the SelectedValue='<%# Bind("DeptID") %> attribute. I can then insert without an exception being thrown but the selected value of the dropdown is not recognized. Here is the code:

ASP.NET - C# (C Sharp) - SQL Server
I've got a master table and a child table. The master table has a nullable column called ReferenceID and in some cases it should be NULL, but when it's null in a record, I get an error while going to Edit mode of DetailsView.
DB Tables:
MasterTable [Columns: MasterTableID (PK), Name, ReferenceID (FK)(Nullable)]
ReferenceTable [Columns: ReferenceID (PK), Reference]
<asp:DetailsView ID="DetailsView1" runat="server" AutoGenerateRows="False">
<Fields>
<asp:BoundField DataField="MasterTableID" HeaderText="MasterTableID"/>
<asp:BoundField DataField="Name" HeaderText="Name"/>
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Reference" SortExpression="Reference">
<EditItemTemplate>
<asp:DropDownList ID="DropDownList_Reference" runat="server"
DataSourceID="ObjectDataSource_ReferenceTable" DataTextField="Reference"
DataValueField="ReferenceID" SelectedValue='<%# Bind("ReferenceID") %>'>
</asp:DropDownList>
</EditItemTemplate>
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label ID="LabelReference" runat="server"
Text='<%# Bind("Reference") %>'></asp:Label>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
<asp:CommandField ShowDeleteButton="True" ShowEditButton="True" />
</Fields>
</asp:DetailsView>
Select Queries:
Select MasterTable.*, ReferenceTable.Reference
From MasterTable INNER JOIN
ReferenceTable ON MasterTable.ReferenceID = ReferenceTable.ReferenceID
Select * from ReferenceTable
In Read Only mode all everything is OK, but when I click on Edit and Postback happens, I get the following error: Server Error in '/Sample' Application. 'DropDownList_Reference ' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items.Parameter name: value It means that in MasterTable, the ReferenceID shouldn't be NULL, but it should be in some cases.
