Way To Detect Postbacks In Javascript

Oct 7, 2010

have a javascript function that fires by clicking any element on the asp.net webpage.When it fires, we have three scenarios:1- full postback (when clicking on a button outside the update panel)2- Partial postback (when clicking on a button inside the update panel)3- No postback (when clicking on a table cell for instance)I was able to detect when a partial postback occurs by using the async property demonstratedbelow, but I could not find a way to differentiate between a full postback and a no

Postbacks And Validators - Get The Parent Control (which Are All Consistently Panels) Using JavaScript?

Feb 18, 2010

I'm using the built-in ASP validators on a few form elements. They work fine - if I click the submit button (a Button), validation occurs without postback and errors are displayed in a ValidationSummary. When that occurs, I also want to call a method in codebehind which changes the CSS of elements, switching their background color to red to reflect errors. I've tried to call this method using both OnClick and OnClientClick in the submit Button, but neither parameter seems to fire the method - client-side validation always takes priority, and a postback never occurs. Can anyone enlighten me?

EDIT #1 Using orandovs link worked alright for changing the element itself, but how about its parent? For example, in C# I'm doing:

foreach (BaseValidator validator in Page.Validators)
{
Panel panel = validator.Parent as Panel;
if (!validator.IsValid)
panel.CssClass = "error";
else
panel.CssClass = "normal";
}

Is there a way to get the parent control (which are all consistently Panels, so I know CssClass will exist) using JavaScript? Something like: $("#" + Page_Validators[i].controltovalidate.parent).CssClass("error");

Detect If Session Expired Using Javascript?

Jul 22, 2010

I am creating a web application using ASP.Net. I am using session in my application.

There is one scenario where I am trying to access session variable through Javascript. It is working fine, when I m accessing it in normal state. But after session expiry, if click on any button, it throws exception and behaves abnormally, resulting in page not found.

Here is the code I am using;

var TransactionID = '<% =((Hashtable)(Session["SessionData"]))["TransactionID "] %>';
if(TransactionID !='')
{
//action
}

I am trying to achieve something like of sort in c#;

String lsStr;
if(null != lsStr)
{
//action

Using Javascript To Detect When User Has Selected Item In Listbox?

Mar 16, 2010

I am developing an ASP.NET web application that incorporates google maps. I have an ASP.NET listbox on my page which contains a list of items. When the user selects one of the items, I'd like to show this item on the map. The main complication lies in the fact that google maps uses javascript to control it and the listbox is a server control.

I can think of two ways to do this. The first would involve the listbox calling a javascript function when the user selects a new item. I can then write this function to perform the necessary map operations. Unfortunately, the OnSelectedIndexChanged property of the listbox doesn't seem to support javascript functions.

The second involves wrapping an UpdatePanel around the listbox and getting the listbox to perform a postback. In the SelectedIndexChanged event in VB/C#, I would the need to somehow make a call to a javascript function which would then update the map.

Web Forms :: IIS Url Rewrite And Postbacks?

Nov 1, 2010

I am using IIS Url rewrite to convert urls from /mypage.aspx?q=value to /page/value.html.

Everything works fine during the first call to the page but on postbacks the url is transformed into
/page/value.html?q=value

when using asp controls such as GridViews, Pagers or Custom Controls.

As a result the Server returns a 404 Error and i can see the corrupted url on the browser's address bar.

This problem was observed when i wanted to change the page of a gridview using a pager.

Validate After Certain Number Of Postbacks

Oct 18, 2010

I have a peculiar situation at hand in which I need to validate a pair of dates in an ASP.Net web app.This is how my page looks like : I have a "From Date" field which consists a set of three dropdownlists ( for Year , Month and Date) I have a "To Date" field which also consists a set of three dropdownlists ( for Year , Month and Date). There is a "Download Report" button on the screen ( which allows a user to download a report for the specified date range) All these six dropdownlists are wrapped in a user control. Now all the 6 dropdownlists have a default "please select" value. When a user lands on the page for the first time , all dropdownlists are set to "please select". The "Download" button is enabled only after valid 'From' and 'To' dates are selected. Now my requirement is that :

When a user lands on the page for the first time , no attempt to validate the dates should be made until he selects all the 6 dropdownlists at least once. When the 6th dropdownlist is selected , the From and To dates should be validated. Once a user has selected all 6 dropdowns once , subsequently on every dropdownlist postback , the dates should be validated. My Issue: What's the best way to track these 6 distinct postbacks ( for each of the dropdowns) before starting to validate the From and To Dates.
I could maintain a flagin ViewState .. but is there a better way?

SessionID Randomly Changes On Postbacks?

Feb 3, 2011

Our solution is built on ASP.NET v1.1 framework. User is presented with login form, so upon providing credentials this information is posted back to the server. Upon postback SessionID changes and our application crashes as some information which is required for processing is stored in the cache and is identified by SessionID string as a part of the name.

This SessionID change happens absolutely randomly and only to some of the clients. Most of the time browser used to view the page and post info is IE8. I cannot reproduce this issue in our test environment, as SessionID is persistent though-out the whole testing process.

I've already checked all solutions, i.e.

Session cache is used on Page_Load to retrieve/store some information, so it's initialized and contains data stored. I've made a Health Monitoring check on Application_End event to capture any possible AppDomain crashes using Reflection and Diagnostics Libraries and retrieving ShutDownMessage from httpruntime object, but that's also not a case. Cookieless attribute of the sessionState in web.config is set to false (using URL to store SessionID is not an option) All MS security and bug fixes are installed on the server. IIS Server settings are similar to the ones we use in Test Environment.

Postbacks Lose The Hash In The URL?

Oct 7, 2010

On an ASP.NET page with a tabstrip, I'm using the hash code in the URL to keep track of what tab I'm on (using the BBQ jQuery plugin). For example:

http://mysite.com/foo/home#tab=budget

Unfortunately, I've just realized that there are a couple of places on the page where I'm using an old-fashioned ASP.NET postback to do stuff, and when the postback is complete, the hash is gone:

http://mysite.com/foo/home

... so I'm whisked away to a different tab. No good.

This is a webforms site (not MVC) using .NET 4.0. As you can see, though, I am using URL routing.

Is there a way to tell ASP.NET to keep the hash in the URL following a postback?

Newbie PostBacks And State Of Controls?

May 4, 2010

In the Page_Load() event handler for one of my pages I use the new statement about 100 times equating to memory allocation for about 100 objects. As follows:

using System.Web.UI.WebControls;
Table mytable1 = new Table();
TableRow [] myrows = new TableRow[5];
TableCell [] mycells = new TableCell[100];
int i;
for(i=0; i<5; i++) myrows[i] = new TableRow();
for(i=0; i<100; i++) mycells[i] = new TableCell();

My question is, should all of these new statements be enclosed like so:

if(IsPostBack==false) {
// Initialize all controls for page just once during the session
}

Or should the Controls be freshly allocated, initialized, and added to the page each time the Page_Load event handler is called? I personally don't think its efficient to create mytable from scratch every Page_Load since all I really ever change is the contents of the table and not the table itself.

Multiple Async Postbacks At The Same Time?

Dec 11, 2010

Say I have 2 UpdatePanels on the page and each UpdatePanel has a one server Button each. When I click on the first button and then the second button and look in Firebug, I see that the 2nd async postback is not triggered until the first one completes.

Is this working as expected? My understanding was with AJAX postbacks, the event handlers for the buttons trigger simultaneously.

How To Handle Errors During Async Postbacks

Jan 5, 2010

We have an ASP.NET page which uses an update panel for partial page postbacks. On the server side, the postback performs some database work and updates several UI elements. The database code is all contained in several transactions, so the state will still be consistent if an exception is thrown. We're working on some error handling code now, and my first thought was to log the exception thrown, reload the last consistent UI state, and show some sort of modal popup or other ui element with a brief error message for the user (this is an intranet page, so we're automatically notified of the bug, and the users know where to find us.

Persisting GridView Data Across PostBacks?

Apr 4, 2011

Alright, so here's my basic ASP.NET page setup: I've got a page with a GridView that has ContentTemplates in it. You can add a row and edit/remove rows at any time. There's a "New" button that creates a new row.

All of this data is bound to custom data objects. So if I have a GridView of "People" and each row has "FirstName", "LastName", and "Gender" (with TextBox and DropDown controls), I then have a "Person" object which has public properties for "FirstName", "LastName", etc. I have the binding set up correctly, and I can push data into the GridView from the object, and I persist the object with the Session variable. My page lifetime structure looks something like this:

Page_Load: Loads the List(Of Person) from Session()

Any events fire, and modify the List(Of Person).After any event, the List(Of Person) gets saved back into Session(), and is then DataBound to the GridView (and any subsequent fields are also DataBound, such as the DropDownList.

My question is: Whenever I fill in rows in the GridView, and then add a new row (there is no database saving going on whatsoever), my fields clear out and don't persist across PostBacks. So, how can I persist my custom data objects with databinding across postbacks?

Dynamically Loading Controls And Postbacks?

Mar 18, 2011

On a dashboard page I'm loading several controls dynamically; the controls always need to be loaded so there is no if (!Page.IsPostBack) code. The problem though is in that in the code-behind, we are using Request.Form.GetValues and a particular dropdown field's value is always null (presumably because the controls are being cleared and reloaded on a postback) and this is triggering an error later on in the page that expectes a value from this dropdown. I have to use Request.Form.GetValues because the page enables dynamically adding rows (each row containing 5+ HTML inputs) via Javascript.

If I check for postback, then the button event of the control does not fire at all but instead the dashboard page is reloaded, and no controls are loaded at all (i.e. the page is blank).

How do I get around this issue? I need to dynamically load the controls at all times, but I also need to retrieve the values via Request.Form.GetValues.

EDIT

Here's what the code looks like, roughly:

(Client-side HTML)
<table>
<tr>
<td align="center">
<select id="Class1" class="txtboxcomm" name="Class1" runat="server" />
<a href="javascript:classFinder('1')"> Look Up</a>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<div id="action">
<asp:LinkButton ID="ibtnGetQuote" runat="server" OnClick="ibtnGetQuote_Click" CssClass="getQuote" AccessKey="G">Get Quote</asp:LinkButton>
</div>

(Server-side, in ibtnGetQuote_Click - this is actually a loop since user can append multiple rows; "i" is appended to the word "Class" to find the exact row)

IList<string> classes = this.GetFormValues("Class1");
// This will return null all the time...
private IList<string> GetFormValues(string clientID)
{
String[] values;
values = Request.Form.GetValues(clientID);
if (values == null)
{
Control ctl = FindControl(clientID); // uses built-in FindControl method
values = Request.Form.GetValues(ctl.ClientID);......

The original code was hardcoding the "ctl00$xx$xx" stuff, but the control may or may not be loaded so we cannot guarantee the name the control will get. In fact, I'm not even sure if this will work for all scenarios since only the FIRST control is a server control, the rest are just standard HTML controls so wouldn't have a "ClientID".

Web Forms :: Saving Data For Postbacks?

Dec 31, 2010

I would like to save some data for use after a page postback. Here is an example of what I'd like to do:

Partial Class TestPage
Inherits System.Web.UI.Page
Private _CategoryID As String = ""
Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
If Not IsPostBack Then
_CategoryID = "ABC"
Me.ViewState("CategoryID") = _CategoryID
Else
_CategoryID = CType(Me.ViewState("CategoryID"), String)
End If
End Sub
End Class

I've tried both session variables and view state. The page loads fine initially, but on postback I get the following error:

Invalid postback or callback argument. Event validation is enabled using <pages enableEventValidation="true"/> in configuration or <%@ Page EnableEventValidation="true" %> in a page. For security purposes, this feature verifies that arguments to postback or callback events originate from the server control that originally rendered them. If the data is valid and expected, use the ClientScriptManager.RegisterForEventValidation method in order to register the postback or callback data for validation.

What am I doing wrong? How can I save this data for use after postback?

MVC :: Create Paging When Dealing With Postbacks?

Mar 31, 2011

I have the following scheme: a View (comming from an action method) called EventSearch that contains a DropDownList of PowerPlants, a ListBox with GeneratingUnits, a DropDownList and two TextFields to set the timespan (you can choose a predefined timespan in the DropDownList or set your own in the TextFields). The model for this page is a DataQuery (an object to be tested against the Database to search the matching values). Clicking in a button in this View will cause a POST.

Then, in another View, called EventList, with the Model being List, I render the above Action, so the user can trigger a search in the same page he visualizes the results.Usually, the number of itens in the list to be displayed in EventList is massive, so I wanted to give paging a try:

[Code]....

when I try sorting or even change page, the results don't get displayed. Here is my ActionMethods for EventList:

[Code]....

I don't know if it doesn't work by the way I created the pages (using this DataQuery object) and if there is another way out of this problem.
