Web Services - Authentication Problem Between Webforms App And A Webservice?
Mar 4, 2011
I got a ASP.Net webforms app which is using Forms authentication. It needs to authenticate against a webservice which uses windows authentication (+ impersonation).
I've tried (amongst other things) to supply credentials by using:
service.Credentials = new NetworkCredential(myUserName, thePassword, theDomain)
The problem is that I get 401 from the webservice no matter what I try.

I need to build a proxy (maybe a bad description) that receives an XML file from a 3rd party, saves it, sends it on to another 3rd party, gets the response back and passes that back to the original 3rd party. Let's call that entire process a "unit".Should I use a webservice? A Generic Handler? Something else?
I might have to do 20 "units" per second, but I know that each "unit" may span 30 seconds to a minute each, so really, I mean that I need to be able to have 1200 of these "units" running at the same time, in all varying stages of the process that I described above.As far as the file saving goes, I eventually want to put this into a database, but I would imagine that writing the file is quicker than actually saving the data into a database, so I'll just have another process that isn't nearly as time critical as this grab the files and insert them into the DB at its own convenience.
The "app" will only consist of 1 page and it will be running under SSL. This will likely be the only thing on this server at any given time to ensure that this little process is not a bottleneck.What in .Net would be a good (fast and scalable) way to go about this? I don't have any effective limit on what I would need as far as hardware goes -- so I can get a screaming machine if it would guarantee no bottlenecks.

how to start or stop the windows services of a remote system.
now what i need to know is, is there any possibility such that the windows services can be start or stop by using webservices.
suppose i have created a webservice in remote system which will keep on monitering the status of windows services present in that machine. now i will create a client service which will sends the service(windows service) name and action to be performed(that is starting or stopping the service).so is it possible to do in such a manner.

Im doing this project where i need to download files through a webservice (images, videos). The download MUST go through an existing webservice. The existing webservice was made when there were no need to upload and download files but the project has changed and now we need to do It through a webservice.Right now I have implemented the download as a method that returns a byte[], I open a streamreader and resds the entire file into a byte[] and returns it to my method. This is working file on small files <~1Mb, above it takes too long time. I want to show some progress (e.g. when the user downlaods a 20Mb video) which i cannot do right now. And i want to make it download much faster (is a strategy to use multithreading and several threads that downloads a part of the file?). It is within a WPF application i need to do this.

I have few websites based on the WebForms and one based on MVC. All websites have the same settings for forms authentication in web config.
The problem is that once logged in to WebForms website, I have to re-login for MVC websites, but when I log out from MVC website, I am automatically logged out from WebForms websites.How can I pass information to the MVC website that user was successfully logged in when using WebForms.

I'm looking to implement my own basic webforms authentication. I don't want to use the 'membership' features in this case because I don't want to modify the database schema with all the membership elements that I won't use, and I don't need to support users across multiple applications. I want to wind up with one simple 'users' table that has username, password, passwordSalt, and several other fields to support custom user attributes specific to this application.
I was looking at this:
http://www.xoc.net/works/tips/forms-authentication.asp
but it's rather dated... is this still valid? I'm looking for guidance on what I need to do to implement a custom webforms auth solution. A very basic skeleton I can expand upon, or a good tutorial/guide that illustrates the necessary parts... just the basics..

I have an ASP.Net website with the standard forms auth membership database, and then a Reporting Services instance with a bunch of reports on it.
How can I integrate the security between the two servers? Worst case, I could just frame in the reports with some code and pass a universal set of credentials to the Reporting server, but I lose security granularity...I could pass the current set of credentials the same way, but then I have to keep the two db's synched. There has to be a better way.

I am having difficulty getting an asp.net web application to run on a new server. This same app has been deployed to at least a dozen other servers without issue. The x-factor seems to be that Sharepoint Services (WSS 2.0) is present on the new machine.
The app is configured to use Forms Authentication with a redirect to a specified login page, the first symptom is that no attempt is apparently made to redirect new requests, requests proceed directly and then error out when that page attempts to look at the HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name.
Second, when navigating directly to the Login.aspx page, the login and authentication check appear to proceed normally, but again HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name is blank where is should now have the users login name, and an application error occurs. I have confirmed that the same code on other servers behaves as expected (the Name is set at this point). IIS virtual directory settings are identical as well.
It would seem that something is interfereing with the normal Forms Authentication processes and that something appears to be Sharepoint. We have already listed the web app's path as excluded in the Sharepoint Admin section. Is there something else that needs to be done?

I have my iPhone app that calls an ASP.NET Webservice to download "data". Most of this needs to be protected, but currently the webservice that's deployed can be called by anyone who can figure out its URL, thus resulting in a complete loss of security.
The simplest form that I can think of would be for the phone to make a call over HTTPS including the username, password that the user logs in with, with every web service all. And each method will check to see if these credentials are correct before sending data to the user.
But this will result in an additional database call for every request to check if the user is authenticated, which is not very efficient.

I keep getting this error:
The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.
I tried with imporsonate= true, but it didn't work
[Code]....
the webservice is called like this:
[Code]....
I hope some one can point me into the right direction.
I'm using iis 7.5asp.net 3.5

Pinging back to a webservice in ajax from the client keeps the user's session alive, I don't want this to happen. More extensive summary For a website we're developing, we need the client to ping back (in js) to a webservice (ASMX) on the server (IIS7.5). This happens to let the server know that the user is still on the site, and hasn't browsed away to another site. This is as our customer wants to let users lock records, but if they browse away to other sites, then let other people take over those locked records. Perhaps the distinction between the client being on the site but inactive and on another site seems unimportant, but that's kinda irrelevant, I don't get to write the UI spec, I just have to make it work.
My problem is this, the ping stops the user from being timed out on the server through the standard forms authentication timeout mechanism. Not surprising as there is that 30 second ping in the background keeping the session alive. Even though we want to know if the user is still on the site, we want the normal forms authentication timeout mechanism to be honoured. I thought I might be able to fix this by removing the ASP.NET_SessionId and .ASPXAUTH cookies in the XMLHttpRequest that is the server ping, but I can't figure out how to do this. This is how my web service & method are defined:
[WebService(Namespace = "http://tempuri.org/")]
[WebServiceBinding(ConformsTo = WsiProfiles.BasicProfile1_1)]
[ScriptService]
public class PingWS : WebService
{
[WebMethod]
public void SessionActive(string sessionID)
{
// does stuff here
}
This is how I'm calling it in js (request is over HTTPS, :
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "PingWS.asmx/SessionActive",
data: 'sessionID=' + aspSessionID + '}',
beforeSend: function (xhr) {
xhr.setRequestHeader('Cookie', '');
xhr.setRequestHeader('Cookie', 'ASP.NET_SessionId=aaa; .ASPXAUTH=bbb;');
},
dataType: "json"
});
I was trying with the setRequestHeader, but that just appends to the header rather than overwrites the header, and IIS is happy to ignore that junk I added. I'm thinking maybe I should be trying to do this at the server end, someone take PingWS.asmx out of the loop so that it doesn't keep the session active, but I'm not sure how to do this. Although the title of the question is focused on clearing the cookie in the header, I'd be super happy if anyone points out that I'm being really stupid and there is actually a much better way of trying to do what I'm doing.
I'm thinking at this stage maybe I need to add something to the webmethod that says how long this particular page has been inactive, and use that knowledge to timeout manually. That actually sounds pretty easy, so I think I'll do that for now. I'm still convinced that there must be an easy way to do what I originally wanted to do though. Update I'm thinking I'm pretty screwed in terms of cookie manipulation here as both the .ASPXAUTH and ASP.NETSessionId cookie are HttpOnly, which means the browser takes them out of your hands, you can't access them via the document.cookies object. So I would say that leaves me with:
Updating my SessionAlive webmethod to track each request so I can tell how long the user has been sitting idle on a page and timeout if needs be Marking the .asmx page somehow on the server end so that it's taken out of the normal authentication/session tracking flow I know how to do 1. so I'll start there but 2. seems much cleaner to me.

How do I protect a webservice if it is called from ajax ?
Update: I realize that my question didn't reflect what I intended to ask. I don't want user to be able to do the request by pointing to it with its webbrowser but only in the context of my app.

It seems the Print Icon in Reporting Services is now throwing up a Windows Authentication box. Even when entering my domainusername and password, nothing happens. It just keeps popping up?
Our reporting service URL is a http://IP Address/........
Not sure if that has anything to do with it. We did add the I.P. in the Local Intranet Zones but still nothing works.

I have to deploy my web application which consists of a website, certain window services, certain WCF services and Sql Server 2005 database.I read Vishal Joshi's blog(http://vishaljoshi.blogspot.com/2009/09/overview-post-for-web-deployment-in-vs.html) detaing Web Package in VS2010. I want to know how to deploy window services and WCF services using Web Package. Also, I want to create a web setup (.msi) for deployment instead of Web Package so that the .msi takes care of all the application and database deployment like the web package does.
