Visual Studio :: Adding A Server Control On Aspx Page Does Not Add Events In Aspx.designer.vb File?

Oct 5, 2010

I work in VS 2008. Whenver I add a server control(Label) and set it properties in aspx.vb and build the solution, I get the error "Label1 not declared". While analyzing this issue I noticed that the event handler statements for the Label1 where not added in the designer.asp.vb file. These statement would actually be added automatically when I drag and drop a control to my webpage.

I would also like to inform the scenario after which this problem came to me. I was working in VS 2008 , VS 2005 and VS 2003 in the same machine.Could this have caused the issue ?

Now each and everytime when I add a control, I am adding the "With Events" code in the designer page to make my build succesfull which makes me to spend more efforts.

Using Webform User Control On Webform In MVC Project?

Feb 26, 2010

I am using a server control on a single web.forms page. I have to use this control on a web.forms page since its a server control, although this is actually a MVC project. So I created a web.forms folder and put my new page in it. I then copy the example code from the signature control. I get the following error:

The base class includes the field 'ctrlSign', but its type (WebSignatureCapture.SignatureControl) is not compatible with the type of control (ASP.signaturecapture_signaturecontrol_ctlsignature_ascx).

I know the code works because if I removed the ID attribute from the server control, it no longer gives me this error and my control renders. But I need the attribute for the ID so I can perform is post event

I am using this signature control. Here's the web.forms code...

<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="Index.aspx.cs" Inherits="KahunaCentralTIDRevamp.SignatureCapture.Index" %> [code]....

How To Declare A C# Web User Control But Stop It From Initializing

Apr 2, 2010

I have a C#/ASP.NET .aspx page that declares two controls that each represents the content of one tab. I want a query string argument (e.g., ?tab=1) to determine which of the two controls is activated. My problem is, they both go through the initialization events and populate their child controls, wasting CPU resources and slowing the response time. Is it possible to deactivate them somehow so they don't go through any initialization?

My .aspx page looks like this:

<% if (TabId == 0)
{ %>
<my:usercontroltabone id="ctrl1" runat="server" />
<% }
else if (TabId == 1)
{ %>
<my:usercontroltabtwo id="ctrl2" runat="server" />
<% } %>

I assumed the that <%'s would have meant the control wouldn't actually be declared and so wouldn't initialize, but that isn't so...

Visual Studio :: Multiview In Designer Adding Horizonal Scrollbars Not Wrapping Text?

May 13, 2010

I wonder if this is either a bug or a setting I could potentially change.

I uploaded a YouTube video of the behavior since it's easier to see: [URL]

I've got a Multiview control with a View (call it view1) inside it. When I type text into view1 within the Design view of Visual Studio 2010, if the text reaches the end of the visible line it does not wrap to the next line as expected (like a div or p tag would do outside the multiview control). Instead, it extends the multiview horizonally and the horizonal scrollbar appears.

Adding To Page Control Collection From Inside A User Control?

Feb 12, 2011

I have an asp.net usercontrol which represents a "popup" dialog. Basically, it's a wrapper for the jQuery UI dialog which can be subclassed to easily make dialogs.

As part of this control, I need to inject a div into the page the control is used on, either at the very top or very bottom of the form so that when the popup is instantiated, it's parent is changed to this div. This allows "nested" popups without the child popup being trapped inside the parent popup. The trouble is, I can't find a safe way to inject this div into the page. A usercontrol doesn't have a preinit event, so I can't do it there, and calling Page.Form.Controls.Add(...) in Init, Load or PreRender causes the standard exception "The control collection cannot be modified during DataBind, Init, Load, PreRender or Unload phases."

I thought I had found a solution by using...

ScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock(Page, Me.GetType, UniqueID + "_Dialog_Div", containerDiv, False)

... which seemed to work well normally, but recently a coworker tried putting an UpdatePanel inside the dialog and now she's getting the error "The script tag registered for type 'ASP.controls_order_viewzips_ascx' and key 'ctl00$ContentBody$OViewZips_Dialog_Div' has invalid characters outside of the script tags: . Only properly formatted script tags can be registered."

How are you supposed to add controls to the pages control collection from inside a user control?

Programmatically Adding A User Control In C#?

Jan 12, 2010

I have a user control that needs to load a child control when a button is clicked. The trouble is that it has to request the control from another class.

So in the button click event, I call the function to get me my control, and add it to the page, like this:

UserControl ctrl = ExampleDataProvider.GetControl(some params...);
myDetailPane.Controls.Add(ctrl);
The GetControl method looks like:
public static UserControl GetControl(some params...)
{
ExampleDetailPane ctrl = new ExampleDetailPane();
ctrl.Value = "12";
ctrl.Comment = string.Empty;
return ctrl;
}

This isn't working due to the page's lifecycle - the Page_Load of the child control gets fired and its controls are null.

Web Forms :: How To Declare A Global Variable That Can Be Used Within A User

May 15, 2010

I would like know how to declare a global variable that can be used within a user after the user login and before the user logout across all the possible pages.

I need to develop a web application that will connect to 5 different servers depends on the selection of user on what server they wish to connect and after they select a server and login...I will need to keep track the server name in a variable last until the user logout (user may visit various pages but the server name MUST NOT be changed due to other user login into different server). So how can I do it so that other users may select different servers and will keep the server name for each different users.

Let says:-

User A selects Server A and login and User B selects Server B and login at the same time, so how the global variable can handle the needs for each user (User A & B) with different server select?

Is "Session" the only way to fulfill the above? I think of using Application State but it seems that the value stored will be shared by all users and not for a particular user.

C# - Dynamically Adding A Custom User Control To A Page?

Nov 3, 2010

I have a usercontrol (ascx) that I want to dynamically add to a page.

Neither the control nor the page has a namespace (thanks crappy vendor).

When I use the following, it tells me it cant find the "type or namespace"

StayTunedControl = (UserControler_StayTuned)LoadControl("~/UserControler/StayTuned.ascx");
Page.Controls.Add(StayTunedControl);
StayTunedControl.StayTunedID = Convert.ToInt32(IncludesStayTunedMeta.Value);

After some tweaking to the namespaces, etc, I am now at a point where the 3rd line above generates the following error:

'System.Web.UI.UserControl' does not contain a definition for 'StayTunedID'

I was hoping that casting StayTunedControl as type (UserControler_StayTuned) would fix this.

Javascript - Adding Click Events To User Control?

Aug 28, 2010

I have a user control in an asp.net web application. The control outputs an html list that is customized based on the currently logged in user. The list items are generated from a database look up and the user control is formatted to appear as a drop down list in the page.

The control itself is simple and looks like this:

<%@ Control Language="VB" AutoEventWireup="false" CodeFile="item-lector.ascx.vb" Inherits="includes_usercontrols_item_selector" %>
<!--Item Selector-->
<div id="item-selector">
<%=Me.Output%>
</div>

The code behind file dynamically fills the control's "output" property so the final markup appears as follows:

<div id="item-selector">
<h1>Item 1 - Item 1</h1>
<a href="#" class="changeItem itemArrow">Change item</a>
<ul id="changeItemMenu" class="dropDownMenu">
<li><a href="#">Item 1</a></li>
<li><a href="#">Item 2</a></li>
<li><a href="#">Item 3</a></li>
<li><a href="#">Item 4</a></li>
<li><a href="#">Item 5</a></li>
<li><a href="#">Item 6</a></li>
<li><a href="#">Item 7</a></li>
<li><a href="#">Item 8</a></li>
<li><a href="#">Item 9</a></li>
<li><a href="#">Item 10</a></li>
</ul>
</div>

The ID and class properties are all necessary for formatting and other scripting. The control is meant to be used as a selector and the rest of the page should react to which item the user selects.

What I am trying to do is add click events to the list items. When the user clicks on one of the items in the list, I want to capture which item the user selects in the list (does this require a postback?) and do something with it in the code behind (< this is key).

I am more of a middle tier and db tier developer and UI development is not my strength so please consider me a newbie in that regard. I am not sure how to proceed or what to inject into the output string to enable this.

Adding Control Tags To An XML Schema File?

Feb 3, 2011

I have an xsd that describes XHTML documents. However the application I'm working with may have some selected asp.net controls within to the markup at the point is validated. Therefore the validation fails.

An example control could be:

<smart:Address runat="server" />

I wanted to add a new element to the xsd file but when I specify:

<xs:element name="smart:Address">

I get validation errors as an element name must not have a colon in it.

how I might be able to extend the schema file to allow selected server controls?
