Finding Final / Effective Web.config Values (from Inherited Configurations)?

Apr 25, 2010

Are there any apps that can show the final configuration as applied to a particular application directory? What I'm picturing is something along the lines of FireBug's CSS viewer.

Basically, it should show the equivalent single web.config file (as if you only had one), with all the values that apply to the directory in question, with each element (or even attribute) annotated with its source (the real .config file it came from).

deploying applications into foreign environments (eg, customer sites) where they sometimes have strange configs, that add in global includes (eg, they put the include in machine.config, instead of the web.config for that app) or have allowOverride=false, etc.

How To Save Configurations Into Web.config File

Nov 9, 2010

I'm using a Asp.net dynamic web site application and can't save configurations into web.config file.

I have tried something like this, but doesn't work!

var configuration = System.Web.Configuration.WebConfigurationManager.OpenWebConfiguration("~");
configuration.AppSettings.Settings["Value"].Value = "Some value";
configuration.Save();

Error I have got with

1. OpenWebConfiguration(Server.MapPath(".")) & OpenWebConfiguration(Server.MapPath("~"):

The relative virtual path 'C:/...' is not allowed here.

2. OpenWebConfiguration("~")

An error occurred loading a configuration file: Failed to map the path '/'.

ADO.NET :: Effective Use Of EF

Mar 19, 2011

I'm currently learning about EF because I want to use it in my applications as it seems to be the new recommended appraoch by Microsoft.I see some of the advantages it would offer me but my biggest concern is hitting the database multiple times because I'm still learning the technology as I go. From what I've gathered so far, it would be a good idea for me to continue using stored procedures for several reasons:Because they're compiled, I get the impression that I'll get much better performance if I were to continue using themBy using stored procedures, I would also ensure that I hit the DB once everytime I need something

Different StructureMap Configurations For .NET And IIS-Hosted WCF?

Jan 26, 2010

I just followed this example to bootstrap WCF with StructureMap. At the same time I've been using StructureMap in my ASP.NET application (IIS6), which is initialized in Global.asax.Application_Start().The two configurations have different requirements. Unfortunately, StructureMap is configured statically, and contrary to my expectations it's shared between the web app and WCF. As a result, the last "Initialize()" called wins!

Is it possible to give each one its own configuration? Or is the only solution to fold them together?

Finding Values In A Telerik Radgrid?

Nov 26, 2010

I've tried to find the answer, but am not having any luck and am wasting to much time trying to figure it out. Using RadGrid from Telerik, latest version of their Ajax Controls, I've added a Select to each row, and can't figure out how to get the value of the selected row. Prefer to get the value of the ID column (from ID field in my database) or other specific columns. C# or VB example will work, VB preferred.

Use Real Time Configurations In Application Without Restarting It?

Mar 29, 2011

I have an asp.net application which uses session for user management. So if the application is restarted users will loose their works. I have some components used by this asp.net application and those components (class libraries in Bin folder) have configurations. I want to save configurations of those components somewhere and change them from back-end (administration panel) and the components use the updated configs but still application should not be restarted (changing web.config will result in application restart).

Finding Shortcut For Enter Attribute Values?

Apr 29, 2010

When you are entering an attribute value, what is the shortcut to jump out of the quoatation marks? It's a lot like hitting enter after you select an enum value for, say, a color or anything like that, that is also in quatations marks. When you hit enter, it fills in the value, jumps outside the quotes and lets you happily continue coding on your way. However, in instances where you are filling out, say, an id value, there is no Intellisense and hitting enter, tab, or whatever will not jump out of the quotes.

Efficiently Finding Unique Values In A Database Table?

Feb 11, 2010

I've got a database table with a very large amount of rows. This table represents messages that are logged by a system. Each message has a message type and this is stored it it's own field in the table. I'm writing a website for querying this message log. If I want to search by message type then ideally I would want to have a drop down box listing the message types that have come up in the database. Message types may change over time so I can't hard code the types into the drop down. I'll have to do some sort of lookup. Iterating over the entire table contents to find unique message values is obviously very stupid however being stupid in the database field I'm here asking for a better way. Perhaps a separate lookup table which the database occasionally updates listing just the unique message types that I can populate my drop down from would be a better idea.

The platform I'm using is ASP.NET MVC and SQL Server 2005

MVC :: Finding Example For Passing Values To Partial Views (and Or To View Database Pictures)

Aug 11, 2010

I probally just tired but I would have swore I had seen an example of this some where for MVC 2,

I want to call a partial view that shows the products information with a GUID passed to the partial view.

I guess you would call it calling a sub but have that sub in a view that i can strongly wire up.

What i need is tutorials for passing a value to the partial view.

Like if i had pictures and i wanted to call a ascx that would show the picture. and have many to a page.

An example about pictures wired into a entities database would rock.....

I did try to look around on here to find some but my mind just gave out on me today....

Visual Studio :: Sharing A Solution File - Projects Settings/Configurations Maintenance?

Sep 1, 2010

I am using VS2005 and I have a solution file (.SLN) which has 8 projects. I moved the solution file to a different path on a shared folder to have better organization of my projects and to allow access to the solution/projects from any computer on the network. After that, I edited the .SLN file so that the path of the projects in the solution file are correct (all on shared folders).

After that, I opened the .SLN and everything seemd to be working fine. However, I notcied that the "Start Options" of the website part of the solution file is missing the "Start Options", ie, the Start Options are reset to default values. I think also, but not sure, some other settings of the Solution/Projects have been reset.

Questions:

1. Where the Web Site "Start Options" are stored ?

2. How I can maintain the Start Options and similar settings if the .SLN file is moved or opened from different computers on the network ?

3. I am not using an team development tools, only plain (vanilla) VS 2005 Prof. Edition. Is it possible to have 2 or more developers work on the same solution/projects (shared on the network), if both developers will coordinate manually simultanous access to the porject files/resources/source code ?

Error - Method 'First' Can Only Be Used As A Final Query Operation

Mar 16, 2011

I have the following query:

Dim roommates = From p In dbroom.Residents _
Where p.room = queryStudent.First.r.id _
Where p.building = queryStudent.First.b.id _
Where p.year = year _
Where p.semester = term _
Select p.person_name

It currently returns no results. I was getting an error when attempting to bind this resultset (since it was empty) to a repeater in ASP.NET, so I attempted to escape it:

If roommates.Count() = 0 Then
Dim nomates As String = "No current roommates."
rptrRoommates.DataSource = nomates
rptrRoommates.DataBind()
Else
rptrRoommates.DataSource = roommates
rptrRoommates.DataBind()
End If

But I still get the same error:

The method 'First' can only be used as a final query operation. Consider using the method 'FirstOrDefault' in this instance instead.

Chart: Final Series Getting Cut Off When Setting .AxisX.Maximum?

Dec 19, 2010

I'm trying to bind a data table like:

month value
5 345
10 1300
12 450

to an ASP.NET Chart control. My problem is that the data table only contain months that have values while in the chart i want to show the full month range from 1st to the 12th.

So i used :

Chart1.ChartAreas["ChartArea1"].AxisX.Minimum = 1;
Chart1.ChartAreas["ChartArea1"].AxisX.Maximum = 12;

But when i do this, a part of the final series gets cut off in the middle like this.

I can avoid this issue by making the maximum 13 but that would not be appropriate since i just need to show the months of the year.

DataSource Controls :: How To Show Final SQL From Parameterized SQLDataSource Before Sent To SQL Server

Oct 12, 2010

I have a SQLDataSource that I'm having a little trouble with. I am using a parameterized FilterExpression and am not getting something right. So, I want to see what the final SELECT output will be that the SQLDataSource is generating and will be sending to the database so I can see what the SQL looks like. How do I do this?

Added:

Here is my code so far:

DetailSource.SelectCommand = "SELECT * from Pictures ";
DetailSource.FilterExpression="ParID = '{0}' AND CardNum = '{1}' AND SeqNum = '{2}'";
DetailSource.FilterParameters.Clear();
DetailSource.FilterParameters.Add("ParID", GridView1.SelectedRow.Cells[1].Text);
DetailSource.FilterParameters.Add("CardNum", GridView1.SelectedRow.Cells[2].Text);
DetailSource.FilterParameters.Add("SeqNum", GridView1.SelectedRow.Cells[3].Text);
Response.Write(DetailSource.ToString());

Security :: Membership / Roles On Test Machine And Final Server

Jun 18, 2010

Is it possible to have the same DB and web.config for both local development machine and the final production server(with forms authentication)? I'm asking this because if I change anything in the ASP.NET Configuration screen(should I use this at all?) I loose the ability to login. Don't know what to put in the <Membership><applicationName>, should it be /myapp-editor or just /, it's different since it runs on two different domains/servers(final server doesn't have an application dir, just root). How can I make sure that the user created on one server will be usable on the other machine?

How To Update Values In Web.config

Feb 21, 2010

I need to store an escaped html string in a key in web.config using the KeyValueConfigurationElement.Save method built into framework 3.5. But when I try to do so,it keeps escaping my ampersands.

Code looks like this:

strHTML = DecodeFTBInput(FTB1.Text)

FTB1.Text is a string of HTML, like this: <b><font color="#000000">Testing</font></b>

DecodeFTPInput uses the String.Replace() method to change < and > to < and >, and " to ".

Given the above string and function, let's say strHTML now contains the following:

<b><font color="#000000">Testing</font></b>

Of course I can manually edit web.config to store the correct value, but I need the authenticated admin user to be able to change the html themselves.

The problem is that when I try to save this string into its key in web.config, it escapes all ampersands
as & which ruins the string.

How can I get around this?

Configuration :: App.Config Values Not Taken?

Nov 2, 2010

I've a windows service that will be calling an exe file (created from a console application). In this console application, I would take some values (especially connectionstring values) from the App.Config file of the console application.

But when this application is called from the windows service, it doesn't take the values from that app.config file. So, I added the same values in the app.config file of the windows service too..... But even here it doesn't take the values.

C# - Intercept An HTML Form Post And Do Some Processing Before Sending It To It's Final Destination?

May 21, 2010

I'm trying to extend the functionality of an ASP.net application that I'm working with. For its logon page, it uses an html form to post to a dll to handle it's login logic. I'm wondering if there is any way to redirect that html POST to my C# code so that I can do some processing and then (and this is the part that I haven't figured out yet) POST it to the dll so that the regular logon logic can continue. I can make changes to the logon page, but the final step must be to do an HTML POST to the dll. I can't change that.

But now I'm at a road block of how to send a request to "unlock" the content. I have the stored procedure to unlock the content, but how/where would I call it when the user just closes their browser?
