How To Update Values In Web.config
Feb 21, 2010
I need to store an escaped html string in a key in web.config using the KeyValueConfigurationElement.Save method built into framework 3.5. But when I try to do so,it keeps escaping my ampersands.
Code looks like this:
strHTML = DecodeFTBInput(FTB1.Text)
FTB1.Text is a string of HTML, like this: <b><font color="#000000">Testing</font></b>
DecodeFTPInput uses the String.Replace() method to change < and > to < and >, and " to ".
Given the above string and function, let's say strHTML now contains the following:
<b><font color="#000000">Testing</font></b>
Of course I can manually edit web.config to store the correct value, but I need the authenticated admin user to be able to change the html themselves.
The problem is that when I try to save this string into its key in web.config, it escapes all ampersands
as & which ruins the string.
How can I get around this?

I have a typical gridview/formview master control setup. When I try to update or insert I don't get any errors but it also doesn't work. When I try to insert data all I get are null values and when I update, none of the values are updated. The formview looks like its working, but just doesn't. The primary key is an identity and it auto-increments by one.

I've a windows service that will be calling an exe file (created from a console application). In this console application, I would take some values (especially connectionstring values) from the App.Config file of the console application.
But when this application is called from the windows service, it doesn't take the values from that app.config file. So, I added the same values in the app.config file of the windows service too..... But even here it doesn't take the values.

[Code]....

In the span's onclick handler i wrote "javascript: alert(getAppSetting('ftpuser'));" for testing, and built some alerts into the function. The first alert returns [object]. That's nice, i thought. The second alert returned 0. That's strange, because the web.config has exactly 1 of this node. So i guess that the function doesn't actually load the correct document. Has anyone done something similar ? When i don't suppy a full path, doesn't javascript assume that it should look for the file in the virtual directory of the current web application where the web.config is ?

I've been getting "Connection forcibly closed" errors and in researching a resolution, I have seen to with the following web.config options, which currently are not set in my web app.
Before I change them, I'd like to know what they are currently set to.
how to read these values from .NET code, preferably VB.NET, though C# is fine.
<httpRuntime
executionTimeout="90"
maxRequestLength="4096"
useFullyQualifiedRedirectUrl="false"
minFreeThreads="8"
minLocalRequestFreeThreads="4"
appRequestQueueLimit="100"

I'm trying to use ConfigurationManager.AppSettings.GetValues() to retrieve multiple configuration values for a single key, but I'm always receiving an array of only the last value. My appsettings.config looks like
<add key="mykey" value="A"/>
<add key="mykey" value="B"/>
<add key="mykey" value="C"/>
etValues("mykey");

I have an add-on for a commercial ASP.NET website. My add-on requires people to merge entries into their web.config, add/overwrite existing files, and add some DLL files to the bin folder. Is there a good and safe way to create an installer than can do this with a wizard type of installation?

I'm trying to implement a 'remember me' functionality on my website to allow the users to remain logged in without having to login again.
ity.FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(userName, true);
I've noticed that the 2nd parameter (createPersistentcookie) is not really persistent as it depends on the timeout value set in the config file.

Are there any apps that can show the final configuration as applied to a particular application directory? What I'm picturing is something along the lines of FireBug's CSS viewer.
Basically, it should show the equivalent single web.config file (as if you only had one), with all the values that apply to the directory in question, with each element (or even attribute) annotated with its source (the real .config file it came from).
deploying applications into foreign environments (eg, customer sites) where they sometimes have strange configs, that add in global includes (eg, they put the include in machine.config, instead of the web.config for that app) or have allowOverride=false, etc.

How can I maintain connection strings necessary to Data access project which are currently in web.config file?(i.e if I choose Class library template for creating DAL and BLL projects) How can I maintain various other web.config key values that are currently used in BLL, DAL code files?How can I deploy compiled project? (ie Web site project I am currently deploying bin folder to Staging> production but this way where should i put DAL.dll and BLL.dll and relevant config files)

I currently have 2 x ASP.NET 3.5 web applications in IIS7 (lets call them WebParent and WebChild).WebChild is nested within the WebParent listing in IIS7 and is set up as an application (rather than just a virtual directory within WebParent). Both currently use their own (Classic) application pool.Both WebParent and WebChild have their own fully defined web.config files in their own root directories.

I created a custom membership provider in my ASP.NET 4.0 web site, stored in App_Code, and referenced in my web.config.
However, it doesn't appear to be pulling values out of web.config during initialization.
The code was taken from [URL] , and the only modifications were changing "connectionStringName" here to the name of my connection string:
[Code]....
The connection string always comes back as nothing in this line:
[Code]....
No matter what I change the password format to in web.config, the default value here is always used:
[Code]....
So to me it's pretty clear it's not pulling out values for some reason. Here is the reference to the membership provider in web.config.

One of my NUnit tests has to read in some values from config files. In my main application this process works perfectly well, however when I run the unit test, the code that reads in the values from the config files doesnt read anything in. Ive tried putting app.config in my unit test project (I even tried web.config) but nothing seems to work. Are there any special steps involved when reading from config files in an nunit test ?
