Prevent Error On Page When Resource Reference Is Invalid?
Sep 20, 2010
I'm using resources like this; " runat="server" />
Resources are maintained in a database and resourcefiles are generated when new translations are added. Sometimes bad references to keys happens. This results in error on the whole page.
How can I prevent the whole page from crashing when a resource does not exist? I just want a tiny error message where the resource lacks, like "Not found: Users.DetailsUserHeadline".
I also want to dynamically retrieve resources from code behind, by defining the key as a string "Users.DetailsUserHeadline" without any erros.

what is wrong with the following Xml file?
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<root>
<align>right</align>
<columns>3</columns>
<rows>4</rows>
<backgroundColor>#333333</backgroundColor>
<circleButtonColor>#666666</circleButtonColor>
<currentCircleButtonColor>#000000</currentCircleButtonColor>
<textColor>#000000</textColor>
<thumbWidth>100</thumbWidth>
<thumbHeight>75</thumbHeight>
<thumbPadding>10</thumbPadding>
<thumbBorder>3</thumbBorder>
<thumbBorderColor>#0000F1</thumbBorderColor>
<assetWidth>600</assetWidth>
<assetHeight>400</assetHeight>
<showImageCaption>yes</showImageCaption>
<showImageShadow>no</showImageShadow>
<target>_self</target>
</root>
And here is the error Invalid at the top level of the document. Error processing resource [URL]. Line 20, Positi... </root> I am sure i could use a break, but in case i don't, before i upload the specific file, i get no errors at localhost. UPDATE: After checking the Xml (Hex), i noticed that the character 0x00 (NULL) was added magically, after the </root> By saying Magically i mean... The XML file is created normally at localhost. The NULL character is appended by a custom FTP class, (which is used for upload - in binary mode), OR something else that i cannot imagine..

I have an asp.net 3.5 website that has been running fine on a server for over 2 years, no changes at all.
Never had any problems, but this week I started getting the following errors:
This is an invalid script resource request.
System.Web.Extensions.
This causes my pages to throw a 404 error.

I'm trying to reference a color value, which is stored in a file called Rsource.resx in the App_GlobalResources directory.
In vs 2008, I used to be able to use a line like this:
[Code]....
Now, in VS 2010, that no longer works.
I found a VS 2010 example that suggests I could try
[Code]....
or
<asp:Label ID="Label1" runat="server"
Text="test", BackColor="Resources.Webresources.sunlight",Visible="false"></asp:Label>
These examples both generate an error that the server tag is not well formed. I'm fairly new to this, so I think my error will be obvious to someone...
What would be the correct way to reference the color value in this case?

in my default.aspx page i have a dropdown List and a textbox with a submit button below that there are 2 listbox... and the dropdown list holds the names of the listbox
my logic here is to select an item from the dropdown list and put some text in the text box and submit the form which will add an item to the listbox selected.. but when i do this i get an error saying Object reference not set to an instance of an object. i tried to figure out the problem and found that when i remove the reference to the Site Master Page it works fine and when i undo and apply my reference back to the Site Master Page i get the same error.

When user cliick on the control before page fully loaded it goes to error page.
Following is the trace.
Execution Error
Invalid postback or callback argument. Event validation is enabled using <pages enableEventValidation="true"/> in configuration or <%@ Page EnableEventValidation="true" %> in a page. For security purposes, this feature verifies that arguments to postback or callback events originate from the server control that originally rendered them. If the data is valid and expected, use the ClientScriptManager.RegisterForEventValidation method in order to register the postback or callback data for validation.

I am a newbie and trying to develop a Yellow-Pages like portal using ASP.NET MVC. I am wondering there will be some bad visitors who excessively request the portal pages to slow down my portal and to block request from other legitimate visitors. My current idea is put a nugget (an embedded code block) in master page to check the interval between two consecutive request. If the interval is less than 5 seconds (for example), I will reject/terminate to render the request.
My question:
What is the best way to handle this issue? If my idea above is applicable to solve this issue, what function must I call to terminate the rendering process (before doing resource-intensive job)?
EDIT 1:
Can we set this on server (IIS settings) globally instead of per application basis?

I have a url like this:
http://www.somepage.com/main.aspx. In this page, when I click on a link it takes me to a page
http://www.somepage.com/cental.aspx?cid=200. So in the cental.aspx.cs page I did the following in the page load:
if(request.querystring["comp"].tostring() != null)
{
//do some thing [code].....
So I got an error like: object reference not set to an instance of reference.My problem is, I am using the same page. So when I go from some page, I will have "comp". but other times not. So when there is no "comp", how do I handle it in request.querystring?

I'm using asp.net mvc 2 applications and while clicking on the link,it shows the error as "HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly."The site was deployed in my localhost (IIS 6) web server.For example the link
http://localhost/news/details/My_First_News_title shows the above error but the link
http://localhost/news/index works fine in the browser.And also we added wildcard in IIS configuration and unchecked the "verify file exists options in IIS.

I'm new to programming in ASP.NET, but I'm making my way through Wrox's Beginning ASP.NET 3.5 in C# and VB.NET.
I'm at a section where I'm creating a BasePage. I successfully created a BasePage by creating a new class file in my App_Code folder called BasePage.cs with the following code:
[Code]....
If I run that code everything works out fine. The page loads and all is well. But, if I try to do the same thing to a page that uses my MasterPage.master file, I get the following error:
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Description:
An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Why is that? In the example code from the book (that also uses a MasterPage.master file), everything excutes and runs just fine. But in my test, I get the above error. I've tried comparing my pages to the books included source pages, but I can't find any differences.
