ADO.NET :: Adding New Record To Entity?

Nov 4, 2010

First of all here's what I'm working with.

[Code]....

First thing is that I'm trying to create a new Contact object to add to the database mid loop I've double checked it and it should work, but doesn't. Secondly, I'm trying to delete a Contact object mid loop and it's throwing an error "Collection was modified, enumeration operating may not execute".

Insert Record Into Mysql Db With Entity Framework

Apr 19, 2010

the problem is that it will insert a new record in a mysql table, I have already done the mapping of the mysql db and I have already done tests returning data and everything works. Now I read from a file, where there are queries written, I have them run me back and the result of true or false based on the final outcome of single query written to the file. Txt; I did this:

using (var w = new demotestEntities ())
(
foreach (var l listaqueri)
(
var p = we.CreateQuery <category> (l);
we.SaveChanges ();
result = true;
)
)

but it does not work, I sense that it returns no errors, but neither the result given written in the query. txt file is as follows: INSERT INTO category (id, name) VALUES (null, 'test2')

Entity Framework - One To One Relationship - Save Record?

Mar 16, 2010

I have a one-to-one relationship on two tables with are represented by 2 classes in my EDM. I am trying to save a new record and am confused how to save to the second entity. I have tried the following.

Dim myObject as new MyObject
myObject.prop1 = 5
myObject.prop2 = "Test"
myObject.myOtherObject.prop1 = 3
myObject.myOtherObject.prop2 = "Hello"

But I get an error when I hit myObject.myOtherObject.prop1 = 3 because myOtherObject hasn't been initialized. How do I initialize an child object under myObject?

ADO.NET :: Update A Record For Multi-user App Using Entity Framework .net 3.5?

Mar 23, 2011

I have a webservice which of course has to be .net 3.5 (a side note is does anyone know why you can't create a webservice using .net 4.0?).

Anyhow it is using entity framework, which I have recently discovered was a really bad mistake to try to use this in .net 3.5.

I have a table "Licenses" with the following columns: LicenseKey, ProductCode, OrderID, Seq, UserName.

In my asp.net 4.0 application I can simply do the following to perform an update:

[Code]....

But it appears there is no ExecuteStoreCommand in .net 3.5 with entity framework. Can anyone explain to me how to accomplish the same thing? The thing I need to point out is that because this is a multi-user access service. I need to verify that SQL will only update the given record where OrderID and Seq is what I tell it ONLY if the UserName is already null. So if two users process the same statement at the same time only one would work and the other would not because the sql should fail (or return 0, rather than a 1) for the second one.

Entity SQL Adding Related Objects

Mar 19, 2010

I have the following tables:

Campaigns (CampaignId, CampaignName, etc)
Urls(UrlId, CampaignId, UrlText)

I have a relationship setup between Campaigns table and Urls (FK_Url_Campaign) everything works fine when I try to add a new campaign but when I try to insert a new Url I get:

Entities in 'DatabaseEntity.Url' participate in the 'FK_Url_Campaign' relationship. 0 related 'Campaign' were found. 1 'Campaign' is expected.
This is my code:
// INSERT
public int Insert()
{
Url dbUrl = new Url();
dbUrl.CampaignId = (int)CampaignId;
dbUrl.Url1 = (string)Url;
context.AddToUrl(dbUrl);
context.SaveChanges();
return (int)dbUrl.UrlId;
}

Pretty much i want update/add new campaign and then I call Insert for Url. how would i go about doing this?

C# - Adding A Custom Property To Entity Framework?

Oct 19, 2010

I am using the Entity Framework for the first time and want to know if the following is possible - I have generated my classes from the DB, and have one called Category.

Obviously it has all my fields in the table (ID, CategoryName, SortOrder etc..) but I want to know if I can add a custom property which is not in the table, but is actually the result of a custom method.

I want to add a new property called 'CategoryURL' which is basically the 'CategoryName' property run through a custom method and returns a hyphenated string.

My initial thought is inheriting from the generated Category class and creating something like this inside?

public string CategoryURL
{
get{ return MyCustomMethod(this.CategoryName) }
}

Is this the correct approach? And will 'this.CategoryName' work as I think it should? Basically the end result is when I return a list of 'Category' I want this to be part of the class so I can use it in my foreach loop.

Adding To EntityCollection Adds To The End Of Collection In Entity Framework?

Feb 28, 2011

I'm trying to have a View where the user can add items in a collection without having to go to a new View (the scenario is a sort of CV site where the user adds info about work experience, skills, etc, and it would seem absurd to go to a new View to add each little thing).

So I have an edit View that shows a number of text boxes for the already added items, and there's an ajax call to go to a method to fetch the collection fresh if the user adds an item.

Here are the methods in question:

Adding And Removing Items Dynamically In One View With Entity Framework And MVC

Mar 1, 2011

I've been at this same question in different forms now for a while (see e.g. Entity Framework and MVC 3: The relationship could not be changed because one or more of the foreign-key properties is non-nullable. ), and it's still bugging me, so I thought I'd put it a little more generically:

You have an entity object (using Entity Framework), say User. The User has some simple properties such as FirstName, LastName, etc. But it also has some object property lists, take the proverbial example Emails, to make this simple. Email is often designed as a list of objects so that you can add to that object properties like Address and Type (Home, Work, etc). I'm using this as an example to keep it generic, but it could be anything, the point is, you want the user to be able to add an arbitrary number of these items. You should also be able to delete items (old address, or whatever).

Now, in a normal web page you would expect to be able to add these items in the same View. But MVC as it seems designed only makes it easy to do this if you call up an entirely new View just to add the address. (In the template for an Index View you get the "Create New" link e.g.).

I've come across a couple of examples that do something close to what I mean here:

[URL]

and

[URL]

The problem is, although the sample projects on these sites work fine, with mock model objects, and simply lists (not an object with a child list), it's a different thing if you actually want to do something with the posted information - in my case save to database through the Entity Framework model. To adapt these cases to that, all of a sudden I'm in a maze of intricate and definitely not DRY code... Juggling objects with AutoMapper and whatnot, and the Entity Framework won't let you save and so on (see above link if you're interested in the details).

What I want to get at is, is it really possible that this is such an uncommon thing to want to do? Update a child collection in the same View as the parent object (such as the email addresses in this case)? It seems to me it can't be uncommon at all, and there must be a standard way of handling this sort of scenario, and I'm just missing it (and no one here so far has been able to point me to a straighforward solution, perhaps because I made it too abstract with my own application examples).

ADO.NET :: Adding A New Table (entity) To The Already Created Model (edmx) File?

Mar 22, 2011

I am building an application using Asp.Net 4.0 and Entity framework 4.

I have already created the model class (edmx) file using the Database-First method of the Entity framework.

Now I am almost nearning the end of the application. I have realised I need to add one more table to my database.

How do I add the newly created table to the model class (edmx) file.

If I again regenerate the model class, similar to what I did the first time i.e using the Database-First approach, will my current application be affected.

Will the already in use data like tables, relationships and views be affected in anyway.

Do I have to follow this approach everytime I need to add a new table to the entity model class.

Web Forms :: Adding Record With Null Date Field With LinqToSql

May 14, 2010

Dim newMem As New Subscription With { _
.First = txtName.Text, _
.Email = txtEmail.Text, _
.dateLastEmail = "1/1/1980", _
.subDate = Now}
dbp.Subscriptions.InsertOnSubmit(newMem)
dbp.SubmitChanges()

The table contains a field called conDate that is nullable, and in this case I want it to remain null. It will get a date value later, when a confirmation is received. If I add .conDate = "1/1/1980", _ I can successfully add the record, but without that line I get System.InvalidOperationException: Nullable object must have a value. I tried this:

Dim DateConfirm As System.Nullable(Of DateTime) = Nothing and adding
.conDate = DateConfirm, _ but that didn't help either. How can I add a record without giving a date to a field I want to remain null?

Entity Framework -Update Entity When Another Entity Is Updated

I'm using ASP.NET with VB.NET. Where in my code do I put the hook to say, "update the history entity" and what should that hook look like?
