AJAX :: UpdateProgress Does Not Clear Until User Clicks?

UpdateProgress has a div which shows "Loading...". Works fine on development server.
On client server, when the UpdatePanel fires, it shows "Loading...", but then seems to "freeze". IE status bar shows "(1 item remaining)"
If the user clicks anywhere in the screen, or types a letter, or otherwise gives some input, THEN the "Loading..." clears, and the new text of the screen shows up.
1. Button_openPanel will display panel Step2Panel through ModalPopupExtenderStep2.
2. Button_runThread (inside Step2Panel) will close Step2Panel and will then run a lengthy process server-side. This lengthy server-side process will cause the UpdateProgress control to be displayed.
Similar to the ModalPopup, I want to disable the whole page while the UpdateProgress control (with its animation gif) is running. Currently, the UpdateProgress is displayed, but I can click Button_openPanel (or anything else) which will cause the application to break.
Is this possible?

Everything's working pretty good now, but I need to disable everything while the time-consuming process is running and UpdateProgress is displayed.
I was thinking of displaying the UpdateProgress control as a a sort of ModalPopup, but I'm not sure if it's possible. If not, then the alternative would be to disable Button_openPanel while the time-consuming process is running and UpdateProgress is displayed.
I want to disable a button when ever user clicks on that. My button present inside the Updatepanel control AJAXI tried with the OnClientClick="javascript:$get(btnUpdate).disabled=true;" button is disabling but that is not calling btnUpdate_Click() server side logic. Please suggest me how to do this.I need to disable button when ever user clicks first time and I need also btnUpdate_Click() logic please adavice me.
I want to display a Modalpopupextender when user clicks on the link, but the above code does not work, it does not give an erorr but does not work too.
I have modal popup extender with two buttons called continue and cancel within it.I get this popup warning when session is going to expire.When I click cancel button it should logout me and when I click continue button it should extend my session for next 20 minutes. Both button gets trigered when I click them.Problem is that when I click continue button it should extend session for another 20 minutes and alert should disapper.That doesn't work.

The node will expand.Then, the user clicks on another parent node and that node expands while the previous parent node stays expanded. My problem is that when I expand one parent node, another expanded parent node collapses.What am I doing wrong?
