Access :: Get The ID Of The Record Just Entered Using AccessDataSource & FormView?
Mar 17, 2010
I'm using an access database that has an AutoNumber field as the primary key. After adding a record I'd like to retrieve the ID for the record that was just entered, however, I'm not able to figure out how to do this in ASP.NET using standard AccesDataSource and FormView functionality. My goal is to retrieve the ID so that I can then use it to add an additional record in a child / sub table.
I could do it strictly using vb.net and forget about using the InsertCommand for the AccessDataSource and it's built in functionality. However, that would require a complete rewrite of some other items, accomplish this using the standard AccesDataSource functionality.
Below is a sample of something I've tried to do using "Direction='Output'" on one of the ID field for one of Insert paramaters (source: http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/articles/050207-1.aspx). The plan was to then caputre that "output" using the my "_OnInserted" sub procedue. However, apparantly I'm not able to use this with AccessDataSource. Did some research and saw that I'd have to switch to SqlDataSource which I'd rather not do cause all other pages use AccessDataSource and I'm having problems defining my connection string with it.
Html:
<html>
<body>
<form runat="server" id="Form1" method="post" encType="multipart/form-data">
<asp:FormView runat="server"
id="FormView1"
DataSourceID="DataSourceFormView1"

When I add an AccessDataSource and attempt to configure it, the "Advanced SQL Generation Options" panel opens, but checkboxes "Generate INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE statements" and "Use optimistic concurrency" are sometimes grayed out.It appears that this happens when a table is specified that contains a foreign key, and it also seems that any Update query statement I specify in conjunction with a related databound gridview doesn't "take". What's the story here? Is it not possible to update a database table from a databound gridview control if the underlying table has a foreign key? Or is something else going on?

How do I assign database to AccessDataSource control dynamically.
If I load aspx page by mypage.aspx?DB=100 then I want to use 100.mdb as data base
If I load aspx page by mypage.aspx?DB=200 then I want to use 200.mdb as data base
Both databases are identical except for the fact that data is different.
Here's default code - Need to replace Bold Code with equivalent of DataFile = response.querystring("DB") + ".mdb"
<asp:AccessDataSource ID="AccessDataSource1" runat="server"
DataFile="c: rims2k00001000.mdb"
SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [EquipmentUsage]"></asp:AccessDataSource>

In my aspx page, I have a formview and a gridview. I am using the insert template of the form to insert an application number and applicant name both of which the user will enter.
I have a insert stored procedure that checks if that same number exist, it won't enter one, if not it will. ID of that table is autoincrement.
If a new number entered, it should show in the gridview as in my query I am asking to show the max ID. The applicatin number in the grid is a hyperlink which allows the user to go to a details page.
My problem: Whenever I click the save button in the formview, the grid becomes visible with the last created number. It is ok if the system allow to enter a new record. But if the number is a duplicate and the system does not enter a new number, still the grid shows with the last created number.
How can I implement what I want to do.
The stored procedure is:
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[InsertNewChurchApp]nvarchar(6),
@AddBy
@Applicant nvarchar(80),
@PK_ApplNo nvarchar(19),

I'm trying to create a Formview in ASP.net 3.5. The underlying SQL Server table does not have an identity field based Primary Key. The primary key is a 4 character user entered field. I have created the form and all looks good but I get the following error message when I try to insert a record
Could not find a row that matches the given keys in the original values stored in ViewState. Ensure that the 'keys' dictionary contains unique key values that correspond to a row returned from the previous Select operation.
I thought ViewState was supposed to resolve the issue. I have viewstate enabled on the page and the formview but that doesn't seem to make a difference.
How can I create a form view with a user-entered text field as the primary key and get the b.... thing to work?

I have my code output a gridview with all the data with an option to select records. I'm trying to make a code which would allow me to select a record, and then print this record using a specific Report stored in MS Access.
I've located the code to print the Report it self, but it prints ether all the records or a range.

I have a question on a simple application - menu's which contain 0...x recipies. I have a formview, and in the formview I have a dropdownlist. The query that populates the dropdownlist depends on the formview's current record ID, how do I get that to put into my data source?
Note that I would prefer not to use the RouteParameter that gives the Formview it's ID as the RouteParameter doesn't use the formview's primary key as I'm using the menu name instead
My code is:
[Code]....
<asp:formview id="fvMenu" datakeynames="MenuID" datasourceid="dsMenu" runat="server">

I have a form view with a normal paging scheme with links to go to the first, previous, next, last, or the
nth record. I want to add a little bit more functionality to this by allow the user to search within the data set while keeping the original paging scheme.
The table structure has one primary key, pk1, and k2 along with some other data fields. There are about 5,000 records in the table.
Currently, when the page loads, I see something like the following: ([______] represents a textbox)
First Prev Record 1 of 5000 Next
Last Go to record # [_____] Go
Go to: pk1: [_____] AND pk2: [______] Go
pk1: 5000
k2: 400
...rest of the fields
I want something like this though when the user enters 8000 in the pk1 textbox and 500 in the k2 textbox:
First Prev Record 3958 of 5000 Next
Last Go to record # [_____] Go
pk1: 5000
k2: 400
...rest of the fields
The problem I have is that the pagination won't display the record's place out of the initial query (3958 of 5000), but rather displays 1 of 38. I want to allow the user to be able to *jump to* the record that they are looking for instead of filtering the results.

I have a Formview to add new record to a sqlsource. This Form in Edit mode has New button for adding new records so this is perfect.
However in some case, this source could be refreshed and all records deleted and then ready to accept new records. However, I found once there is no record returned from sqlsdatasource, this Formview does not display at all, including that New button and so the whole page is blank.
how to make sure the Formview display that New button even when their is not yet record from the database.

I have a webpage with a gridview on it which is bound to a table in an Access database. So I now drop a dropdownlist on the webpage and when the Choose a Data Source popup appears if I select my Access data source there is nothing in the select a data field for display and select a data field for value fields on this popup. So it appears I have to create another Access data source. But why if I already have an Access data source on the same database? What am I doing wrong?

I am attempting to insert into two tables at once, but it's inserting blank values into the first table, and then correctly inserting the values into the second table. here is my codebehind, I can post the rest of my code if needed.

Even when I comment out the second insert command, the first one still inserts null values.
