Security :: Allowing Access To Default.aspx With Default Document Enabled?

Jan 19, 2011

I am trying to secure very mixed content that is located in an ASP.NET directory. For purposes of this question, it can be ~/MyApp/.

I want all of the content in the directory and its subdirectories restricted to authenticated users. The default.aspx page, though, should be accessible to everyone. This is the web.config in that directory:

[Code]....

Now if you are an unauthenticated user, everything works fine if you request [code]....

The problem occurs in that visitors do not always request "Default.aspx". We have a default document configured so that they get Default.aspx even if they just request "/MyApp". An authenticated user works fine, but an unauthenticated user is directed to the login page.

Now I know that essentially this happens because even though the request for "/MyApp/" will actually end up serving up "/MyApp/Default.aspx", the security system is only checking for "/MyApp/" since that is what I requested. That is then getting the default security for the directory.

How can you configure an exception to allow access when no particular file is requested in the directory??

Is there some dependency between DefaultDocumentModule and UrlAuthorizationModule? In this environment, the UrlAuthorizationModule has been removed and re-added in order to make sure it fires for non-managed requests. I would not expect that to change the order of execution, though, since UrlAuthorizationModule usually goes after DefaultDocument.

A workaround could be to set up the opposite security with the directory being open, and then trying to secure individual files. Because of the (changing) number of files, and extensions, etc, and the fact that you cannot use wildcards in a <location>, this is not really a workable solution for me.

Access :: Parameterized Queries With Optional Parameters (Access DB)?

Aug 13, 2010

so I have a web programming assignment for university where I'm building a website that uses an Access database but I have hit a brick wall with something.I'm using parameterized queries to query my database. For one of my queries, I want to be able to take a bunch of parameters that are optional, and if they aren't needed I'll pass in a value of null and I'd like the part of the where clause relevant to them to evaluate to true. This is straightforward in most databases, from my understanding you could do something like to make param1 an optional parameter.

WHERE ((@param1 = ARandomColumnName) OR (@param1 = null))

However this can't be done using Access, as all parameters in a query are represented by a ?. Every ? is assumed to refer to a different parameter, so if you want to use a parameter more than one (like the above code I wrote does) then you'd have to pass it twice. This seems hacky to meSo what do I do? I have spent *hours* googling and banging my head on the desk. I'll cry if I missed something really obvious

Access File System Through Query String Or Parameters?

Feb 11, 2011

I have been given a task of reproducing the issue/testing the unauthorized access to file system through request.param and query string.

For instance i have something like this. request.querystring("blah");

How could somebody pass "../../../b1/b2" in the query string and access file system.

This may be related to cross site scripting.

WCF / ASMX :: Access/pass Parameters To A Web Service WITHOUT A (general) Form?

May 15, 2010

I am a newbie to ASP.NET (but not to C#)I have a project I am developing that may seem unconventional at this point but it is a project that I hope to eventually expand and provide a new type of service on the internet. Currently the project makes use of an Excel spreadsheet that is generated by another application I wrote. Basically the spreadsheet is an index to a specific type of file that exists on a host computer and the files are directly linked from within the excel document. When the link is clicked it opens the file using the operating system default program which then processes the file (this takes some time).

This is fine and dandy but when I click on another file, the default program immediately stops processing one file and opens the latest submission and thus interrupting the previous job. To prevent this I am now writing a queuing application. Here is where ASP.NET comes in. I do not want the link to open the queuing application with the file to add into the queue as a parameter because that pops one or more nnoying/scary "you are opening an executable" dialogs and because I want to be able to access the queuing service from a remote computer, and possibily in the future over the web. Instead I am trying to use an ASP.NET service application that will accept the name of a file as a parameter, access the external queue class (defined in an external dll of which only one universal instance is allowed), and add the request to the queue. Whether or not the table is an excel table or on a web page, using a form in this instance is tedious, not only for me but for a user. I want the user to be able to simply click on an html link and have the file be queued without anything except maybe a confirmation page pop up saying that the file has been queued and it will take x amount of time before the file is finished processing.

My problem is I cannot for the life of me find a way to do this. I have searched the interenet for over a week now looking for a way to call a "WebMethod" using a link and I am getting the impression that it cannot be done. Even when I use a form and try to have the form pass a string (representing the file name) as its "action" it comes up with an application error saying that I am missing the parameter I am trying to pass. Here are some examples of what I have tried:Here an example method I would try to access:

Here is an example of how I tried to access directly by way of a link (which results in an application error: InvalidOperationException)"

Access :: Using A Subquery Value As Default In QueryStringParameter?

Jun 29, 2010

Using this call;

<asp:AccessDataSource id="AccessDataSource2" runat="server" DataFile="_database/92592_Web.mdb" SelectCommand="SELECT *, (SELECT MAX(ID) as Max_ID
FROM myMovies) FROM [myMovies] WHERE ([ID] = ?)">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:QueryStringParameter DefaultValue="1" Name="ID" QueryStringField="ID" Type="Int32" />
</SelectParameters>
</asp:AccessDataSource>

How can I use "Max_ID" as my DefaultValue? So that basically if the page gets passed without a parameter, the SQL will use the Max(ID) as a default. Can I use Max_ID as a DefaultValue?

I'm an old .asp developer still on the learning curve of .NET so some of this stuff is a little daunting. In .asp doing something like this was pretty easy...

How To Set The Default Access Modifier To Private Instead Of Protected In Visual Studio

Jul 20, 2010

While developing and ASP.NET application in C# or VB using Visual Studio 2005/2008/2010 (Not a problem in 2003), if I create a new method automatically by double-clicking on a control in the designer or picking the new method in the code editor dropdowns (VB only), the access modifier is always protected instead of private. This is annoying because my developers have to manually change the method to private every time.

Visual Studio :: No Default 'create/open' Access To 'WebSites' From The VS2010 Start Page?

Jan 4, 2010

Why is there no default 'create/open' access to 'WebSites' from the VS2010 start page?

Background:I've succesfully been developing ASP.NET web applications (via WebSite method ((((Not WebProjects)))), using VisualWebDeveloper) for roughly 3 years. Personally, I prefer the WebSite method or strategy due to the decrease in both size and complexity (the web applications I build are generally for around 50-100 simultaneous users logging in and out and constantly manipulating data). I will continue bulding my sites via the 'Website' method provided VS2010 doesn't begin it's deprecation.The root of this question (which boiled into this post) came from perusing this article and this video tutorial. It's a shame to see functionality that brings with it an overall ease of use and increase in production capacity by decreasing both size and complexity of web application development... downplayed.

If the Visual Studio 2010 Development Team left this functionality out for a reason, I would very much like to know. So that I know what is going to be "sponsored by Microsoft" in a couple of years and I don't waste another second considering using the 'WebSite method' as a viable solution (as I know that I can't stick with vs2008 while rest the development community gets to evolve with the innovations implemented within vs2010)... WebSite method or the WebProjects method.
