Architecture :: Image Hosting Website - Save Over 1000 Images On Disk?
Jul 28, 2010
Let's say I am creating a image hosting website. My potential users will be somewhere around 1 Million, and every user potential has 10,000 images, and I need to serve over 1000 images per second.
So, I bought a diskarray, with 10T storage, SAS 15K SCSI drives.
The problem is: What is the best way to save those files on disk? How to organize the folder structure to make sure NTFS can find one file from a billion files under a huge tree folder quickly? I mean, serve 1000 images per second is non trivial issue. My current website is serving over 100 images per second, and I already see the performance problem: NTFS can't find the file fast enough! And of course, my folder structure is not good enough either.

Is it possible to edit images using a javascript library and then send the edited image to the server for saving.
Edits will be in real time, means the user can see the edit result in the same time he is editing without the need to refresh the page.
I want a javascript library to do some edits on an image on a webpage 'such as crop, resize, rotate,...' and send send the edited result to the server.

I have very basic knowledge of ASP.net. I am using following script to resize and image, but the problem is it increases the disk volume of resized image to almost 4 times or original image.
Example:
Original Image: 1024 x 769px and Disk space: 135 KB
Resized Image: 600 x 380px and Disk space: 825KB
Notice resized image becomes 825KB.

I'm building a Web application that will eventually contain a lot of images. These images will need to be displayed in different formats across the site. What would be the pros/cons of the two solutions:
Storing various versions of the picture when they are uploaded (e.g. thumb, small, medium, large, verylarge)
Resizing the image through the URL - e.g. /Content/Image/1?height=300
Edit:I had a really hard time accepting one answer over the other, so for anyone reading this q/a, take your time to read both answers because the accepted answer was selected by the flip of a coin :) They're both equally good.

How to save Ajax Editor content as an HTML file to a disk?
Let's say I have an Ajax Editor which allows user to type or paste in long message or writting. Once he clicks on "submit" button, an HTML file will be created and save to a disk. I am working on asp.net 3.5, ajax version 3.5 (from codeplex, work well).

I have an app configured to use anonymous authentication, the application pool is set to network service. When I run filemonitor I can see that thw w3wp.exe is picking out the webpages and stuff from my hard drive and returning images etc. However one of the pages saves a file to a folder using c# save() method. Instead of the w3wp.exe actually writing the file to disk explorer.exe seems to be accessing the folder. What the hell is going on? I though the w3wp.exe did everything asp.net related why on earth is explorer.exe being introduced into the fold here?

I have written a website and let the user upload their photo. It also resizes the picture to 400 x 400 and crops automatically to the center part of the picture. All of this works good but each file is about 355K each for JPG and PNG file formats. I just tried GIF and it is 49K but the picture is grainy when saved this way. Is there any way I can get the picture to a smaller file size with keeping it at 400 x 400? I really thought PNG would be the way to go and was surprised by it being the same as jpg. I don't want to lower the quality either for JPG files.

i need to save multiple documents stored in SQL server as Image type to disk.
What i want to do is "backup" all files in a table (column) to disk, zip them and Response.TransmitFile(FilePath) to client.
I could use C# ot VB but that would require a lot of connections to database or a lot of server memory and i don't want that, becauze there are a lot of files to be saved Since SQL can write files to disk i was thinking about saving those files to disk directly from sql. Something like when u're doing a backup
