Best Way To Do Global Viewdata In An Area Of MVC Website
Nov 16, 2010
I have an several controllers where I want every ActionResult to return the same viewdata. In this case, I know I will always need basic product and employee information.
Right now I've been doing something like this:
[code]....
This is just pseudo-code so forgive any obvious errors, is there a better way to be doing this? I thought of having my controller inherit a class that pretty much does the same thing you see here, but I didn't see any great advantages to that. It feels like what I'm doing is wrong and unmaintable, what's the best way to go about this?

I've learned asp.net from books available on the internet, but I didn't find a good book that teaches you some techniques or logic to follow to build an administration area to control the front-end.I mean they talked about security, membership and roles. but still they didn't show you how to manage anything that's not related to a database, anything that's related to a database you'll probably create a page to display some info from a db with some SELECT commands and another page for the admin to INSERT, DELETE, UPDATEbut how can I connect to the other controls from my admin panel.for example : a textbox in the admin.aspx will edit the value of a certain label in display.aspx
another example : I built a web user control to retrieve articles from a DB and another control to be placed in the admin page, which will let the admin add new articles and it will insert it to the database, how can I add more power to the admin page to control the number articles to display on the page, or to control the sorting of the articles, etc...If i could get a name of a book that helps me with the logic or basics of creating a page that works like my admin panel to control the front-end it would be great,

I have a simple online store where there are products that can be put into a cart and purchased. There is a admin page that can be logged into so that new products can be added or existing products can be removed or edited. To get to the admin area I need to put a /admin/index after the main page loads up. If I want to give my friends (from any location) the ability to add new products should I create a link to the admin area on the main page (like at the bottom) of the main page or should I just tell them to type in /admin/index after they go to the webpage?

I use in my application 2 areas: Website and Admin. I will put all controllers and views in these areas, not in root application. So I would like to have default route 'Website/Mycontroller/Myaction', not 'Mycontroller/Myaction'. I have changed Global.asax.cs:
[Code]....
to:
[Code]....
but now my application doesn't work when I open website http://xxxxxx.pl.

I have a website with a global.asax file with some debug code in Application_Start, which inserts some debug information in a table in the db:
void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
Log.LogToDb("App Starts");
}
I have 2 versions of the same website, one compiled and the other one just plain code.The plain code website correctly inserts these records in the db, but the compiled one is not doing it.
I have a feeling the Global.asax file is being ignored by the compiled website. I can see the dll for it in the in folder: App_global.asax.compiled and App_global.asax.dll although I can't see a Global.asax file in the root folder (do I need one?)
I must say the website is compiled with MSBuild and then obfuscated using Dotfuscator.

I have recently published my website, it worked fine but the only issue is that the error handling code in the global.asax never works. It works when I tested the website on my localhost but not when it is deployed onto my hosting provider.
I tried moving my global.asax file onto my root directory (not the bin) on the hosting folder, then my whole website wouldn't even start. I get the error message "System.Web.HttpException: This server variable cannot be modified during request execution."
But if I remove the global.asax, then it is running fine again.
Note: I didn't use the publish function in Visual Studio to publish my website, I sent the files over one by one via cPanel. Note: I googled about this, a lot of them are saying about global.asax being precompiled into a dll, but I can't find that dll in my local computer.

When I run my app locally I get no errors. No error from Global.asax, no redirection to an error page. Everythings works fine.
When I deploy my app to a test server, my app run there with no errors. No error from Global.asax, no redirection to an error page. Everythings works fine on the test server.
But when I deploy my app to production server, the app runs fine but I keep getting errors (emailed to me) from Global.asax. On production server we have these security apps that run and keep hitting all URLs of the app on the server. Just to make sure they are working fine. When these security app hit URL of my app, my application runs fine but it gives out this global.asax error. The funny thing is that error is empty. The error are emailed to me and the email is empty. Nothing there.
There are several other apps running on the same server. My app has its own app pool and is configured correctly.

Actually I'm not a professional in ASP.NET. I'm going a project that needs to support two languages (Russian and English).I've already completed the main parts and the site is now 95% functional.However, now I need to enable language selection on the site.
I'm going to do it with DropDownList, where a user chooses one language from DropDownList, the content must change to particular language.
All texts are displayed using server controls like Labels and Literals. Links are in Hyperlink or LinkButton.
I did some research to handle with my condition, but no-one suits on my condition, because I've almost completed the application. How to generate Global Recourse files for controls on the page?

I know there is a couple answered questions on here regarding "request scoped" globals, but I want to nit-pick on something specifically and maybe squeeze some extra enlightenment out of one or two of you.I have an ASP.NET C# Website and a static Dictionary of objects (loaded from DB once on Application start). Each page request will need to do a lookup in the Dictionary (based on a key derived from the request url/etc) and get the appropriate object.The issue is I'm trying to maximize efficiency by reducing the lookups to the Dictionary per Request. Doing just a single lookup within a Page itself is easy enough and I can pass the object to sub controls, etc too.. but global.asax is separate from the Page and it also needs to use the object (in Application_BeginRequest and Session_Start).
So is doing a Dictionary lookup once in Application_BeginRequest, once (when necessary) in Session_Start and once in the Page negligible speed wise, even if there are many requests coming in every second?I would like it if I could just have a Request scoped global variable that I can easily call upon.. the only one I see available though is HttpContext.Current.Items and that is a Dictionary itself.Am I beingridiculously nit-picky with my concern over efficiency? or will these milliseconds (nanoseconds?) get me in the long run when more and more requests are being made?
PS. I currently only have around 100 objects in the Dictionary although this may increase in the future.

I have a little MVC 3 challenge that I am trying to overcome.Here is my scenario:I have a controller called PersonController.cs with 5 methods:Add Add (post) Edit Edit (post) PopulateName(string EmailAddress) - POST
I have a viewdata class called PersonViewData.cs with 3 pieces of data:
Email FirstName LastName
I have 2 PageViews (Edit.aspx and Add.aspx)I have 1 PartialView (Details.ascx) - with 3 textboxes (Name, Email, Phone)I want to reuse this partial view in both the Edit.aspx and Add.aspx Views.
The user should NOT enter the First Name/Last Name - rather, once the user has entered the email address (OnChange of Email textbox), the First Name/ Last Name of person should be populated. This is done using the PopulateName(string EmailAddress) controller method. Meaning, I have an AJAX Form inside the partial view
Then once all 3 fields are populated. The user should be able to submit either the Add or Edit HtmlForm.
Code of Edit.aspx:
[Code]....
Code of Add.aspx:
[Code]....
The main issue is as follows:I have an AJAX Form inside the partial view. Since now we have a PageView Form and nested PartialView AjaxForm - Form within a Form - the Browser has a hard time with this concept. In fact, when a person enters an email address, the frmEdit/frmAdd gets submitted.

Does anyone have any idea why the code below doesn't give me any value but instead gives me "System.Web.Mvc.SelectListItem"? If I don't do a foreach but instead substitute the ViewData with this
<%= Html.DropDownList("PersonOnCallCheckBoxList") %>, I get the correct value.
foreach (var person in ViewData["Person"] as IEnumerable)
{
%>
<input type="checkbox" value="<%= person %>" /><%= person %><br />
<%
}

I'm new to .Net development, and now are following NerdDinner tutorial. Just wondering if any of you would be able to tell me What is the differences between ViewData and ViewModel(all I know is they are used to pass some form of data from controller to view) and perhaps tell me on what situation should I use ViewData instead of ViewModel and vice versa
