If I store all my user info, upon login, in cache and just have a "my account" page that displays the user info from cache, is that a good practice? I'm wondering if a person changes his email or does any type of database modification then the cached variables will be the wrong ones. If I have to update the cache variables every time something happens to the database, is this even a good practice compared to just querying the data whenever needed?

We have a data driven ASP.NET website which has been written using the standard pattern for data caching (adapted here from MSDN):
public DataTable GetData()
{
string key = "DataTable";
object item = Cache[key] as DataTable;
[code]...
The trouble with this is that the call to GetDataFromSQL() is expensive and the use of the site is fairly high. So every five minutes, when the cache drops, the site becomes very 'sticky' while a lot of requests are waiting for the new data to be retrieved.
What we really want to happen is for the old data to remain current while new data is periodically reloaded in the background. (The fact that someone might therefore see data that is six minutes old isn't a big issue - the data isn't that time sensitive). This is something that I can write myself, but it would be useful to know if any alternative caching engines (I know names like Velocity, memcache) support this kind of scenario. Or am I missing some obvious trick with the standard ASP.NET data cache?

I add cache to my application, I have a page which contains several User Control, my problem is I just want to cache the data returned from Controller, but not want to cache all the page content. Since one of my user control is login control, if I cache all the result, then it will behave incorrectly.
my problem is :
1.Is it possible to just cache the data returned from controller ?
2.If a page is cached, can I force a control in the page to be uncached ?

In my web application i have statistics which shown for each user separately ie. posts made , posts made today , articles started by and so on...
Each user has his own special statistics.
What is more flexible and "right" to work with one huge DataTable in Cache with whole data from all users and then loop thought DataTable to find certain user data or to cache each user ie. cacheObj + userID...

I developed an ecommerce application.In this application (out of all other user products stuff ) use Sales to products
Here is simple demo:
http://clients.mantis.co.il/EcommerceDemo/
For example
Buy 20 products and the other 2 product with 50% off
And another example
Buy 1 product and the other cost 9.99$
And last example
Baying more than 600$ got 20$ discount
Course calculate this is not so simple, and the GET BASKET event can take time
I wondered what the best way to do it. My 2 options are:
1. Try to cache the user basket.Yes - because this calculate make just one time (until the user change and add product to the basket etc')No - because this object keep on the server, and if I take a situation that many user fill their basket I don't want the server work slower because the consequence of this decision.
2. Of course the opposite to call this calculate each time than its make slow the make basket event but this not "sit" on the sever and I am not afraid of crash the server.

I am looking for an elegant (i guess as elegant as it can be) solution to caching a users profile on login (whether it is session, cache, cookie, etc) and keeping it in sync when a users profile is changed. How do you guys handle this? Just simply call a Flush() method in your Save() method that invalidates the cache?

I've built a Repository that gets user details
Public Function GetUserByOpenID(ByVal openid As String) As User Implements IUserRepository.GetUserByOpenID
Dim user = (From u In dc.Users
Where u.OpenID = openid
Select u).FirstOrDefault
Return user
End Function
And I'd like to be able to pull those details down IF the user is logged in AND IF the cached data is null.
What is the best way to create a User object that contains all of the users details, and persist it across the entire site for the duration of their visit?
I Was trying this in my Global.asax, but I'm not really happy using Session variables. I'd rather have a single object with all the details inside.
Private Sub BaseGlobal_AcquireRequestState(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.AcquireRequestState
If Session("UserName") Is Nothing AndAlso User.Identity.IsAuthenticated Then
Dim repo As UrbanNow.Core.IUserRepository = New UrbanNow.Core.UserRepository
Dim _user As New UrbanNow.Core.User
_user = repo.GetUserByOpenID(User.Identity.Name)
Session("UserName") = _user.UserName()
Session("UserID") = _user.ID
End If
End Sub

have a complex sql stored procedure which involves several unions.The unions also involveat from views. When the data is returned, it might look like the following.
ProductId Name Amount Buyer Date YearsAsCustomer
1 Jones 234.44 Nichols
1 Jones 3/12/2011 3
2 Melon 333.00 Tripol
2 Melon 3/23/2011 4
This is just a simple example, but notice how the records with the same product Id can be combined?Because one record has some of the data I need and the other record has different data. So essentiallythey should just be in one record together. So the output should look like this:
ProductId Name Amount Buyer Date YearsAsCustomer
1 Jones 234.44 Nichols 3/12/2011 3
2 Melon 333.00 Tripol 3/23/2011 4
How can I combine these records together? In the stored procedure the query is build in a parameter stringnamed @SQL, and then the query is executed by using the EXEC command:EXEC sp_executesql @SQL.Is their anway I can combine all of the outputted records into one record. Where the records I want to combine
have the same ProductId (As in the example I illustrated above?)

I have an ASP.NET website in which the user has the Login/Logout functionality. There are some pages which are viewable only if the user is logged in. Now, after the user signs out, I noticed that the user is still able to see this restricted page on pressing the back button. I want to create the functionality such that once the user signs out, the page should not be viewable. How can that be done?
P.S I am not using built in Login controls in ASP.NET

I'm trying to cache user controls and on some pages i want to cache single objects. There are multiple ways of implementing caching, and my head is breaking over it.
The way I see the caching options now:
You have the PartialCaching option which is set to cache the control for 30 minutes, and after that it clears itself... You have the varyByParam to identity the page by its querystring paramaters... or other vary options
But i just cant find an appropriate way to add caching to a control, and be able to clear the caching programmatically when i update one of the objects used in the control from the backend.
You can do HttpContext.Current.Cache.Insert(), which accepts a key on which you can destroy the caching item later by using remove... This can save objects in cache but can you use options like varyByParam?
My questions are burnt down to two:
Is there a way to clear the caching on specific user controls from the code? If yes, can this be done according to the varyby options? How would the object caching respond to logged in users or anonymous users using Insert()?
EDIT: I'm caching multiple things.... And I'm really flabbergasted in which choice to make referring to caching. Can the Cache.Insert be varied by Parameters?
The main problem is peopling editing things from the backend, which needs to trigger an event that reinstantiates or clears all caching items referring that object.

I have 2 tables with UserId and FirstName, LastName Columns that I want to combine the data in a Select Statement or Stored Procedure
1. The 2 tables will never have the same data, each table will be distinct
2. I want to combine first and lastnames to a full name (t1.FirstName + ' ' + t1.LastName) AS FullName
3. The statement will be used to populate a dropdownlist with UserId as Value, and Name as text
I am unsure how to accomplish this since I do not need to connect the tables, but combine the Sum of their data.

I have a page that deploys a user control to display an article. The page will show a different article depending on the ID parameter fed in via querystring, and there are many thousands of articles in our db. Here is the problem: I need to cache the user control to improve performance. But editors constantly need to go in and make changes/corrections, which they want to appear instantly on the site. Is it possible to clear the cache for a specific article only once it has been edited? ie for the request article.aspx?id=123? If so how would I do this? Otherwise, if the cache is cleared for all our content every time a single piece of content is edited, it will defeat the object of caching in the first place. I have tried using a cache key as recommended here: [URL] However, this apporach suffers from the drawback mentioned above. have also seen that you can set caching up to be cleared by changes to the db. However, the particular table concerned holds content for a number of other sites and would also have the same disadvantage.

In our .aspx pages we have user controls each control has a Sql query to fetch data. The caching mechanism to be followed says that fragment cache all the user controls and invalidate the cache based on the respective queries of the user control.How to proceed to add a query dependency to fragment cached user control?

just want to have a quick question about the value of dropdownlist listitem. I have a gridview which has its datakey value linked to a dropdownlist. In the dropdownlist I have many listitems. So I decided to combine some list items together. Originally, the values of the items are 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. But I want to have only 5 items by combining 5,6,7,8 into one listitem called "Others." So if the listitem "Others" is selected, the gridview will show all the records that have value 5 or 6 or 7 or 8. Is it possible? How can that be done?
I hope I made myself clear. Any question, I am happy to clarify.

I'm fairly new to all this, but have slowly been teaching myself C# and ASP.net MVC over the past year or so...I really tried to search for this, but haven't been able to find anything - it may be I'm using the wrong terminology!I'm using ASP.NET MVC2 with EF4 connected to a SQL Express db. Situation: Without getting into too much specifics, I have one table called 'Plan.' Under 'Plan' are several different categories that are related to a single Plan item [say Category A, Category B, Category C and Category D]. Each 'Category X' table has a beginDate, endDate and other details specific to that category.
I'd like to be able to create a summary page that combines all items from Category A, Category B, Category C, and Category D and sorts by beginDate - but only need a few of the columns [eg - begin/end date, name, id].

I am writing a currency converting module for one of our applications. I have a list of products, a list of currencies we are interested in seeing prices for, and a list of currency rates. I want the user to be able to select which currencies from the list they see in the GridView. I also want to be able to amend my list of currencies and include a new currency, without having to make additional changes to this module. So my GridView display has to be "dynamic". Essentially I am planning on ending up with a GridView that has the following columns:
Part No - Description - USD Price - AUD Price - GBP Price
The USD price would be static as it's our base currency, the AUD and GBP are user selected and could have potentially any number of currencies listed. I would normally use a DataSet and DataTables for this work, but I am sure there is a "better" way to do it using System.Collections.Generics. Right now I have all of the data I need in List collections, but there does not seem to be a way to define how these collections relate to each other, or combine these collections into one so it can be bound to a GridView. Should I be looking at something other than List to achieve this or do I need to go back to my original approach of a DataSet and DataTables.
**UPDATE / SOME CODE**
I will explain a little bit more about what I have setup so far.
1) List of Products & Currencies - These come from an SQL DB via LINQ, so they can be any of the System.Collections.Generics objects, e.g. List, IEnumerable etc.
2) Currency Rates - These I am pulling from the European Bank public XML file. I download the file, strip the data I need out of it and currently store that as a List object.
I could store the currency rates in the database table as well, but then I have to have some sort of background process that goes and updates the rates each day. This way the rates only get updated when someone accesses the report function (which is only going to happen occasionally). So I would rather grab the latest rates "on demand". What I know I need to end up with is some object that has the following structure:
PartNo - Description - Base Price - Currency Price 1, Currency Price 2, Currency Price 3
Where the number of Currency Prices is undefined, as it's based on what currencies the user wants the report to display. It's the undefined part that I am struggling with, essentially how can I create a structured object, that I don't know the complete structure of until runtime?

We have a wfc layer that wraps the business classes and database access and use a client that lives on the database layer. Amongst our group we are attempting to form standards. Some want to have the client call the web method and pass the page they are requesting and the page size. Pass that to the database and then page in SQL Server use RowNum.Some want to cache the full list of objects in http cache on the service tier and page in memory. They concern here is memory use on the server.
Which would be best for a medium number of users with potentially large number of records to manage (say 30K) Is it better to cache them all in memory and work from there or page at the database as the application scales?

What are the "optimal" parameters for creating an AppFabric cache when you will be storing session state in the cache? MSDN Cache-Related Commands
Powershell command line:
New-Cache [-CacheName] <String> [-Eviction <String>] [-Expirable <String>] [-Force [<SwitchParameter>]] [-NotificationsEnabled <String>] [-Secondaries <Int32>] [-TimeToLive <Int64>]
[code]...
Since I don't want my sessions to be removed unless the session has been abandoned either via code or Session Timeout...For eviction, I would think "None" and for expireable, I would think False.I have tested and calling Session.Abandon does remove the object from the cache. I have also tested to see if by extending my session, the session object in cache is also extended. This does seem to work the "correct" way.
