Configuration :: Connection Speed To Database Server?

Feb 9, 2011

My web server and database server are currently both in the same room. However, the web server might be changed to a different server in another building about a mile down the street. I want to make sure this doesn't have a negative impact on the connection speed between the database and web server. Is there a way to test the connection speed from both web servers to the database?

I have uploaded the files to oneandone hosting. I have set up a datebase and chnaged the database connection details but get the following error

Inner Exception Could not find stored procedure 'uspPageHit'.

The database connection looks like this:

<add name="site" connectionString="Data Source=[hostname];Initial Catalog=[databasename];User Id=[username];Password=[password]" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

and the info on the one andone host panel provides :

If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider.

Configuration :: Database On Go Daddy And VS2008 App Can Not Access It Via Web.config Connection String?

Mar 28, 2010

I have a database on Go Daddy and my VS2008 app can not access it via web.config connection string. Of course runs great locally in development. I copy/pasted the connection string information from Go Daddy exactly into my web.config file. Web site runs fine on the web but when I try to Login at my login page, i get :The SSE Provider did not find the database file specified in the connection string. At the configured trust level (below High trust level), the SSE provider can not automatically create the database file.

I used VS2008 to create the .sql script files and uploaded them to Go Daddy and the Go Daddy people say everything works as they and I can both Login to the database from within GoDaddy.The database i am trying to access consists of the a ASPNETDB.mdf and another Database.mdf together as one in the Go Daddy database.

here is what i used: <connectionStrings><add

Configuration :: The Connection To The Server Was Lost?

Mar 15, 2010

I have an application 'A' builded by VS2005 and Framework 2.0.50727 before.And I am fixing an application 'B' builded by VS2003 with Framework 1.0, so I installed 1.0 yesterday.Everything worked fine but today when I was running 'B', it showed "Visual Studio cannot create or open the application because the Web server on this computer is not running. Start the Web serber before proceeding."Even if I reintall 1.0, VS2003 still shows this message.Then I closed VS2003 and open VS2005 to run application 'A' to see if app 'A' works fine.

But after I run app 'A', the IE says cannot display web page.So I checked my Default Web Site in IIS, it says 'The connection to the server was lost. Do you want to attempt to reconnect?'I tried solutions from internet to solve running app 'A' :1. Type C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727 -i or -u in command.2. Checked the World Wide Web Publishing status is startedThe running app 'A' still gave me cannot display IE picture.Does anyone know how can I do for it?

SQL Server :: Unable To Add A Connection To Database (SQL Server 2008) Using The Server Explorer

Aug 13, 2010

This issues has been driving me nuts. I am trying to follow the tutorial on [URL] I am trying to connect to a database in Microsoft SQL Server 2008. The way I do this is by right clicking on the "Data Connections" > Add Connection. Afterwards the Add Connection window comes up, I make sure my data source is "Microsoft SQL Server (SqlClient). And, I choose a server name; the only server I can choose is DomainSQLEXPRESS. The issue is when I go down to the "Select or enter a database name" drop down box, I do not see my database listed. I have also made sure in the SQL Server Management Studio that I have given my user all the privileges for the database. I know my explanation is kind of vague, but would anyone know the reason why I would not see my database?

Configuration :: SQL Server 2008 - Can't Get Connection String Right After Many Attempts

Mar 8, 2011

I have a new server that I am attempting to deply my very first asp.net website on. I have installed SQL 2008 r2 and loaded my DB on it. I am able to access the server/DB through Visual Stuidio. At least I know i can call it from the webserver to my local PC.

For some reason I just cant get my we.config's connection strong right. It might even be the <provider> info that I have wrong. I am just too inexperienced to know for sure. My Web.Config is very short so I will post all of it here.

-- Code is posted at the end --

How do I modify my local project to use my webservers DB instead of the standard SQL Express DB? The only connection string

Machine.Config that points to the sqlexpress database. Again I lack the experience to know how to do this. I am using Visual Studio 2010 and SQL Server 2008 r2 on my local pc.

Configuration :: Encrypting The Connection String In Web.config On Windows Server 2008

Mar 30, 2010

When I try to encrypt the "connectionStrings" section in the web.config file of my asp.net web application on Windows Server 2008, I'm getting the following error:

Administration utility (2.0.50727) to install and uninstall ASP.NET on the local machine. Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Note: This utility has limited capabilities on the Windows Vista operating system. It is recommended that you use the "Turn on or off Windows features" option of the "Programs" component of Control Panel to install or remove ASP.NET. It is also recommended that you use the IIS Manager component or the Appcmd.exe tool to configure ASP.NET applications.

The above information is followed by the list of valid options to aspnet_regiis.exe.

The command that I've used is:

aspnet_regiis.exe -pef "connectionStrings" "C:Usersuser1DocumentsMywebsite" -prov "DataProtectionConfigurationProvider"

But, the same command is working fine when used on a Windows Server 2003 machine. The problem is occurring only on Windows Server 2008 with IIS7.

Configuration :: Slow Initial Page Load Speed And Compile Settings

Dec 8, 2010

Over the last week I've been investigating an issue for one of our clients whereby the initial page load following a deployment of their website takes around 1 minute, resulting in unacceptable downtime for end users. This was happening not only for code deplyments (bin dll's and .config files) but also if there were large numbers of .aspx pages updated. For code deployments it's not an issue, but for aspx updates it is; in this particular scenario, we are making use of a 3rd party content management system (RedDot from OpenText) in which every page of the site is published out as a distinct .aspx page. This means that for this website there's somewhere in the region of 2,400 separate .aspx pages. I realise this isn't an ideal situation but we're working within the constraints of the CMS, and we managed to correlate the instances where the site was unresponsive with App pool restarts, which also corresponded to publications of of .aspx pages.

I found an article by Tess Ferandez [URL] which describes all the reasons why the app pool may restart, and it does seem that if more than 15 .aspx pages are changed then the app pool will recycle and the pages will be re-compiled. Another msdn article [URL] then gave me a few pointers on how to start addressing this problem, and for the moment I've set a flag on the compilation options to prevent batch compilation:

<compilation batch="false">

This means that the initial page load now takes around 6 seconds instead of 1 minute, which is a great improvement. However, I also used the "Compilations Total" performance counter to investigate the number of pages that have been compiled by ASP.NET for my site and was quite surprised that the total number of pages that get compiled peaks at 44, which is odd given that there are 2,400 aspx pages in the site. If the batch flag is set to false, the counter slowly increments by 1 page at a time as you click around on the site; if batch mode is true, the initial compilation takes the number straight to 44 over the course of ~60 seconds. What I'm really struggling to understand is why all 2,400 pages aren't compiled. Does anyone have any inside info on what might be going on as all the documentation I've read seems to indicate that all of the pages should be compiled and this counter should be much higher.

SQL Server :: Accessing Database Without Using Connection String In Web.config

Aug 2, 2010

To give some background details, I have created a website for a friend that has a few pages that require a database in the background. I've used Visual Studio templates for most of it, so there's the standard ASPNETDB.MDF file that's created for users and groups, a login page and a page to view and manage those users etc etc. The login page uses the standard controls for logging in, retrieving lost passwords and so on. Being standard controls, by default they get the connection string from the web.config file. Upon attempting to upload the site to my host (1and1.co.uk in case anyone else has any dealings with them) I discovered that storing the connectionstring doesn't work. 1and1 support say that the sql databases can only be accessed using scripts like this (this is an example of theirs):

<html>
<title>Queries from the MS-SQL database with ASP</title>
<body bgcolor="FFFFFF">
<h2>Query from table <b>products</b> with ASP</h2>
<%
Set conn = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
conn.open "PROVIDER=SQLOLEDB;DATA SOURCE=mssqxxx.1and1.com;UID=dboxxxxxxxxx;PWD=xxxxxxxx;DATABASE=dbxxxxxxxxx"
'This code block will create a recordset
Set rs = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")
SQL = "select * from products"
rs.open SQL, conn
'will iterate to display the records got from the database
While Not rs.EOF
&nbsp; response.write(rs("id") & " " & rs("price"))
&nbsp; rs.MoveNext
Wend
'closes the connection
rs.close
conn.close
Set rs = Nothing
Set conn = Nothing
%>
</body>
</html>

So my question, is it possible to get the standard asp.net controls to access a database through a script like this?

SQL Server :: Connection To Database Expires Causing An Error?

Aug 9, 2010

I have an asp.net web page which works with a database. When I first upload it I never disposed the connections so after using the different modules of the application for sometime it would suddenly stop working saying the connection pool filled or something like that.To fix it when a user clicked a button I opened the connection, tell the database what I needed and finally disposed the connection.

This seemed to fix everything, in fact you can work with application all you want, the problem comes if you stop using it for certain time.So for instance, I have a module in my webpage where user can capture information for a certain product. When the user clicks in one button the info gets into the database. If the user is continuosly capturing data everything works fine, but if it goes for about 10 min when he clicks the button he will receive an error. To fix this the user has to log-in again.

Every module opens a connection to the database to verify the user identity, but then after it verifies it I dispose the connection so I don't think there is a problem.
